high prevalence of the bim deletion polymorphism in young female brEast cancer in an East Asian Country
PLOS ONE, 2015Co-Authors: Chinghung Lin, Chenyang Shen, Jihhsiang Lee, Chiunsheng Huang, Chihhsin Yang, Wenhung Kuo, Dwanying Chang, Chiani Hsiung, Kuanting Kuo, Weiwu ChenAbstract:Background A rapid surge of female brEast cancer has been observed in young women in several East Asian countries. The BIM deletion polymorphism, which confers cell resistance to apoptosis, was recently found exclusively in East Asian people with prevalence rate of 12%. We aimed to evaluate the possible role of this genetic alteration in carcinogenesis of brEast cancer in East Asians.

distinct clinicopathological features and prognosis of emerging young female brEast cancer in an East Asian Country a nationwide cancer registry based study
Oncologist, 2014Co-Authors: Chinghung Lin, Chiunsheng Huang, Wenhung Kuo, Po Ya Chuang, Chunju Chiang, Annlii Cheng, Meishu Lai, San Lin You, Chao Hsiun TangAbstract:Background. Arapidsurgeofyoung-femalebrEastcancer(YFBC) hasbeenobservedinTaiwanandother East Asian countries. We recently reported that these cases of YFBC, in contrast to their Westerncounterparts, arepredominantlyluminalAsubtype.YFBC inAsiamayhavedistinctclinicopathologicalfeaturesandoutcomes. Methods. Datacollectedprospectively byparticipating hospitalswereretrievedfromtheTaiwanCancerDatabase.Atotalof 15,881 women with newly diagnosed stage I–III brEastcancer in 2002–2006 were included. The age at diagnosis was categorized into nine 5-year groups (from ,30 years to $65 years). Clinicopathological variables and patient disease-free survival (DFS) were compared by age group. Results.TheratesofstageI,estrogenreceptor-positive(ER1), andprogesteronereceptor-positivebrEastcancerwerehigher in the younger patients (,50 years) thanin the older patients ($50 years). Univariate analysis showed that the 40–44 and 45–49 age groups were significantly associated with longer DFS than the other age groups. In the ER1 subgroup, multivariateanalysisconsistentlyshowedthatthe40–44agegroup wassignificantlyassociatedwithlongerDFSthantheotherage groups except for the 45–49 age group. In contrast, multivariate analysis of the ER-negative subgroup revealed no significant difference of DFS between the 40–44 age group and other age groups. Conclusion. Emerging YFBC in Taiwan is uniquely associated withfavorablepathologicalfeaturesandbetteroutcomesand should not be regarded as the mirror image of its Western counterpart. The Oncologist 2014;19:1–9
