towards process oriented teaching for self directed lifelong learning a multidimensional perspective
Learning and Instruction, 2003Co-Authors: Sanneke BolhuisAbstract:Abstract Self-directed learning is often embraced as an important Educational Goal, although for quite different reasons, from the improvement of school learning to the critical assessment of the claims of democracy. Most reasons imply that self-direction is important in learning throughout life. Therefore process-oriented teaching, which aims to foster self-directed lifelong learning, needs a broad and multidimensional theoretical basis. The important role of experiences in the social and cultural context, prior knowledge, and the emotional aspects of learning are highlighted, and related to self-directed learning in life. Important aspects of process-oriented teaching are summarized in four principles. A multidimensional approach to learning also provides a conceptual basis to teachers’ learning. Developing a process-oriented approach in teaching presents a major challenge for teachers as well as for schools.

barriers to the use of assistive technology for children with multiple disabilities
Occupational Therapy International, 2004Co-Authors: Jodie Copley, Jenny ZivianiAbstract:Assistive technology has aided children with multiple disabilities to improve access and participation in their school and home environments. Effective Educational outcomes from assistive technology use are dependent upon a coordinated assessment and implementation process. The literature on assistive technology with children was reviewed in order to identify current barriers to its effective integration within schools. These barriers were found to include lack of appropriate staff training and support, negative staff attitudes, inadequate assessment and planning processes, insufficient funding, difficulties procuring and managing equipment, and time constraints. A team model for assistive technology assessment and planning is proposed to optimize the Educational Goal achievement of children with multiple disabilities. Such a model can help target the allocation of occupational therapy resources in schools to best promote Educational and broader functional outcomes from assistive technology use. design and evaluation of learning processes in an international sustainability oriented study programme in search of a new Educational quality and assessment method
Journal of Cleaner Production, 2015Co-Authors: Jana Dlouha, Simon BurandtAbstract:Debates relevant to transdiciplinary and sustainability oriented teaching at the higher education level anticipate necessary transitions in curricula. This article describes an international sustainability-oriented teaching and learning programme at the higher education level, where theoretical concepts developed over recent decades were applied in teaching practice, tested and reflected upon. The authors have operationalized conditions for learning success in a transdisciplinary learning environment, designed courses so that desirable competences were not only a by-product of sustainability oriented teaching, but its primary Educational Goal, developed (formative) assessment tools, observed the specifics of the environment in which particular courses have been realized (e-learning setting), and received feedback on students' perceptions of various aspects of their learning. While the content of the programme was concerned with the principles of sustainability, its methodological focus on competences was associated with a change in communication practices between teachers and students that have been gradually liberated from the traditional transmission model in favour of a more open and interactive one. Analysis of the students' perception of the learning process showed their attitudes and approaches to learning ranged from a surface approach to a deep approach; desirable approaches have been identified as core Educational qualities to be preserved within curricular innovations. The article contributes to understanding the role of the learning environment which provides the opportunities for teacher interventions to support interactive and self-directed learning.

exploratory orientation as an Educational Goal
Educational Psychologist, 2006Co-Authors: Hanoch Flum, Avi KaplanAbstract:This article lays the foundations for the notion of exploratory orientation as an Educational Goal. After reviewing the conceptual roots of exploration, the article examines the essence of the experience of exploration and its developmental benefits. Then, turning to the context of school, the article discusses the mostly implicit role of exploration and of exploratory orientation in a number of perspectives concerned with adaptive student engagement. The article concludes by briefly noting the environmental and instructional practices that could facilitate an exploratory orientation among students, and by calling for further conceptual and empirical work in this domain.
