    Abstract The fact that each Medium has its own profile of cognitive advantages calls on the media educationist to master the Medium's formal features so as to use them to convey an Educational message that is desirable and suitable for the Medium. TV is known to be a pervasive audiovisual electronic mass Medium. This paper pursues its features in order to expose its particular qualities that have the potential to enhance education. Only if TV has more to offer Educationally than other Educational tools have, or if it makes a specific contribution to education, can its expensive use be justified.

    Abstract:

    Abstract Radio is a mass Medium that can be harnessed to enhance an education campaign since it can span great distances and reach a large number oflisteners. Because of its wide coverage, relatively low unit cost, ability to reach those who are illiterate and without the use of mains power, it has proved to be an effective Educational Medium. The features of the radio Medium are: it is a ‘blind’ (ie non‐visual) Medium; it functions in real time; and its codes are purely auditory, consisting as they do of speech, music, sounds, noises and silences. The fact that it is non‐visual can be harnessed to improve education quality since the listener is compelled to support the sound message by using his/her own imagination. No other Medium has this Educational power of stimulating and developing the abstract thinking of its audience and enriching and activating the listener's imagination.

    Abstract The Internet is increasingly used in all education. In January 1993 the University College of Education in Reykjavik launched a distance education BEd programme. This article gives a brief overview of an evaluation of the programme that was carried out in the years 1993‐96. Selected findings are introduced with special emphasis on the use of the Internet. At the end there are some speculations about the future use of the Internet in education. But at the outset, there are a few words about distance education in general.     Abstract:

    This article discusses the anxieties that lead to resistance to anti-racist and culturally sensitive reflection and engagement on social work trainings. It briefly discusses a culturally diverse social work training and the anxieties described by the students that hindered the integration of the teaching of race and culture during the training. The article then contrasts this with another more successful training experience on another social work course at a different university with a similar level of cultural diversity by the use of the group as a psycho-Educational method to manage the student’s defences and avoidance of the difficult and painful knowledge required to enhance reflexivity when it comes to issues of race.   • Educating Parents about Youth Suicide: Knowledge, Response to Suicidal Statements, Attitudes, and Intention to Help

    This study evaluated the video Youth Suicide: Recognising the Signs as a parent Educational Medium. Before and after viewing the video, parents (N = 112) of young people answered questionnaires measuring their (1) knowledge of suicidal signs, (2) responses to a young person showing suicidal signs, (3) attitude to suicide, and (4) intentionality toward suicidal people. After the video, parents' knowledge of suicidal signs, responses toward a suicidal person, and intention to help improved. Their attitude was more rejecting of suicide. Knowledge and intentionality predicted response to suicidal statements, but no relationships existed between attitude and the other variables. Implications for youth suicide education programs are discussed.

    Abstract:

    Augmented reality (AR) is an Educational Medium increasingly accessible to young users such as elementary school and high school students. Although previous research has shown that AR systems have the potential to improve student learning, the Educational community remains unclear regarding the Educational usefulness of AR and regarding contexts in which this technology is more effective than other Educational Mediums. This paper addresses these topics by analyzing 26 publications that have previously compared student learning in AR versus non-AR applications. It identifies a list of positive and negative impacts of AR experiences on student learning and highlights factors that are potentially underlying these effects. This set of factors is argued to cause differences in Educational effectiveness between AR and other media. Furthermore, based on the analysis, the paper presents a heuristic questionnaire generated for judging the Educational potential of AR experiences.
