    We assessed the effect of two pathogens (myxoma virus and Eimeria stiedae) and five macroparasites (gastrointestinal helminth species) of the wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) upon total host body mass and abdominal fat level. Additionally, we assessed the effects of these organisms on the number of foetuses in adult females during the peak breeding period. Both mass of abdominal fat and total body mass of the rabbit were negatively associated with myxoma virus infection and increasing helminth species richness. Total body mass was also negatively associated with the protozoan parasite E. steidae. No relationship was found between any of the parasites/pathogens and the number of foetuses in adult females, although only relatively small sample sizes were available for this section of the analysis. Increasing host body mass was positively associated with number of foetuses and we propose that mass reduction caused by the pathogen and parasite species could also have the consequence of reducing foetal number.

    Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Herba Cox®, a commercial herbal compound containing extracts from Bombax malabaricum, Aegle marmelos, Anethum foeniculum, Resina salvia, Ferula asafoetida and Papaver somniferum, for the treatment of rabbit hepatic coccidiosis. Thirty rabbits were allocated into three groups (10 × 3), the G1 group served as a negative control group, G2 group (positive control group) was infected with 5 × 104 sporulated E. stiedaeoocysts and served as infected-untreated group, and G3 group was infected with 5 × 104 sporulated E. stiedaeoocysts and treated with Herba Cox®, 1 ml/liter of drinking water, starting 7 days before infection and continuing for 4 weeks post-infection. When compared to the infected group (G2), body weight and weight gain were significantly (P ≤ 0.05) increased, the feed conversion rate was improved and no mortality was detected in infected treated group (G3) and similar to negative control group (G1). In addition, faecal oocyst output and liver enzymes were significantly decreased. Malondialdehyde, nitric oxide, and glutathione concentrations observed in G3 were similar to those in G1. In infected-untreated rabbits (G2), the haemoglobin, lymphocytes, and CD4+/ CD8+ ratio were significantly decreased, while the total leukocyte count, percentage of heterophils, and heterophil/lymphocyte ratio were increased. Significantly more severe histopathological hepatic lesions were observed in G2 when compared to G1 and G3. In conclusion, the obtained results showed that Herba Cox® should be considered a safe and novel effective compound for the treatment of E. stiedae infection in rabbits.

    This study investigated the effect of oleo-gum-resin of Commiphora monlmol Engler (Family: Burceraceae) known as Myrrh and the commercial extract known as Mirazid as a treatment against hepatic coccidiosis induced by the parasite Eimeria stiedae in domestic rabbits. Rabbits were infected with 1000 parasite sporulated oocysts and subjected to two treatment regimens, using crude myrrh suspension and the oleo-resin extract, mirazid, each administered at 500 mg/kg rabbit body weight. Treatments of infected rabbits resulted in significant reduction of the mean oocyst numbers in rabbit faeces by 52.38% in the crude-treated rabbits and by 90.90% mirazid-treated rabbits, compared to the untreated infected rabbits at day 21 post-infection (pi). At day 28 pi no oocysts parasite were observed in the faeces of rabbits. Both treatments resulted in significant recovery of infected rabbits from all symptoms of infection compared to the untreated infected group and healthy control groups. Histopathological examination of liver showed remarkable improvement in all histopathological parameters in G5 and G8 compared with the infected untreated G2. These included an almost complete healing of the hemorrhagic tissue and partial healing of the endothelial lining and hepatocytes encircling the central vein, the hepatocytes laminate regained their original radial shape and disappearance of fat vacuoles from the tissue and remarkable reduction in lymphocytes infiltration, decreased hyperplasia of the epithelial cells with significant decreasing of the parasite stage numbers. Results also indicate that mirazid was more effective than crude myrrh, probably due to higher content of purified active ingredients.

Infected rabbits had normal body weight following treatment. Biochemical analyses showed that liver enzymes (aspartate amino transferase, alanine amino transferase, gamma glutamyl transferase, alkaline phosphatase and bilirubin), total protein and hemoglobin levels returned to normal in response to the treatments. The results also indicate that Mirazid was more effective than the crude myrrh, likely due to a higher content of the active ingredients. The results of this study indicate that myrrh extracts, such as Mirazid, are promising sources for novel effective anti-coccidal drugs that are safe to the animal and the environment. These extracts are recommended for use in clinical practices.

    Abstract The aim of the current study was to assess the hepato-protective role of curcumin and silymarin against Eimeria stiedae in experimentally infected rabbits. Thirty-two rabbits were randomly divided into four groups: untreated/uninfected control group (A); untreated/infected control group (B); curcumin-treated/Eimeria-infected group (C); and silymarin-treated/Eimeria-infected group (D). Animals in groups C and D were treated by a daily dose of 200 mg/kg bw and 100 mg/kg bw of curcumin and silymarin, respectively for one week before infection (the herbs were administered for 41 days). One- week post treatment, all groups except group A were infected with 5 × 104 sporulated oocysts of E. stiedae and followed for 34 days post infection. During the 34 days of infection, rabbits were evaluated for clinical, hematological, biochemical, pathological parameters and liver dysfunction profiles. There was no significant difference in mortality rate among the different groups of animals except for the infected group B in which 7 out of 8 rabbits died while in the treated groups C and D, 3 out of 8 died. Infection with E. stiedae significantly reduced the body weight and affected rabbit's health. The average body weight gained of A, B, C and D groups were 929, −62.46, 614 and 448.8 g, respectively. However, significant improvements in general health condition were observed in curcumin- and silymarin-treated groups. No significant differences were detected for the fecal oocyst counts between the treated and untreated groups. Moreover, the liver enzyme profiles ALT, AST and GGT did not show any significant changes in the infected groups. However, ALT level significantly decreased in groups B, C and D. ALT level was accompanied with hyperproteinemia and decreased in albumin content in comparison with the uninfected untreated control group. Moreover, E. stiedae infection induced severe histopathological lesions in the liver of all infected groups. In conclusion, curcumin or silymarin did not protect the liver from E. stiedae infection but mitigated the adverse effect of infection.

    The early detection of Eimeria stiedae in the hepatic tissue of experimentally infected rabbits was investigated using molecular assay. Forty 6-week-old male New Zealand rabbits were divided into two groups. Group A (30 animals) was infected with 2.5 × 10(4) sporulated oocysts of E. stiedae per animal on Day 0 and Group B (10 animals) was used as the uninfected controls. Three animals from Group A and one from Group B were sacrificed at 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24 and 27 days post infection (PI). Gross and microscopic post-mortem findings were recorded. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the E. stiedae internal transcribed spacer 1 genomic region was conducted on blood, liver tissue, and feces from the Group A experimentally infected animals. Macroscopically, the liver showed irregular yellowish white nodules pathognomonic to E. stiedae infection beginning on Day 15 PI. Hepatomegaly and ascites were obvious from Day 21-24 PI. The presence of different E. stiedae schizonts and gametocytes in the histopathological sections of the biliary epithelium were evident on Day 15 PI. The E. stiedae PCR was first positive in liver tissues on Day 12 and in fecal samples on Day 18 PI, but the blood samples were negative. In conclusion, the PCR can be used for early diagnosis and control of E. stiedae schizonts before shedding of the oocysts in feces.

    The early detection of Eimeria stiedae stages in hepatic tissue of experimentally infected rabbits was studied. The experiment was conducted using 40 male New Zealand rabbits of six weeks age. The rabbits were divided into an infected group (A) of 30 rabbit and a control uninfected group (B) of ten rabbits. Group A was infected with 2.5×104 sporulated oocysts of E. stiedae per rabbit at zero day. Three rabbits of group A and one of group B were sacrificed at 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15,18,21,24 and 27 day post-infection. Gross findings, light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and molecularly with PCR were applied to detect specific findings of E. stiedae in the liver tissue pre- and post- shedding of oocysts in the feces. Grossly, liver showed irregular yellowish white nodules appeared from the 15th days postinfection and became more prominent gradually. Hepatomegaly and ascites were obvious from the 21-24th day post-infection. Histopathologically, different schizonts and gametocytes of E. stiedae in the biliary epithelium appeared at the 15th day post-infection. Findings of TEM were matched with the light microscopy. PCR showed positive findings starting from the 12th day post-infection using specific E. stiedae primers and its specific amplicon of E. stiedae (976 bp). The shedding of oocysts began from the 17th day post- infection and reached the peak at the 23-25th day PI, then began to decline until the end of the study. In conclusion, the convention PCR detected Eimeria schizont from the 12thday post- infection earlier to PM lesions or before shedding of the oocysts in feces.
