  • Determining the Relationship between Residential Electricity Consumption and Factors: Case of Seoul

    Abstract:

    This paper aims to determine the relationship between residential Electricity Consumption and other factors by analyzing the correlation and multiple regression between residential Electricity Consumption and three variables which are known as the factors affecting residential Electricity Consumption. We used the Electricity Consumption, income, number of household members, and age of 25 autonomous districts in Seoul as data for analysis, assuming that the socio-demographic characteristics vary from district to district in Seoul. The results showed that the Electricity Consumption and the three variables each had a significant correlation. However, multiple regression analysis results showed that the income and the number of household members have an effect on Electricity Consumption, but the average age is not a factor influencing Electricity Consumption. The results of this study would be useful for understanding the characteristics of urban residential Electricity Consumption in situations where the needs for an increase in residential Electricity rates are continuously coming out.

    Abstract:

    Abstract This study divides the households into five groups according to the Electricity Consumption and compares the characteristics and the determinants of household Electricity Consumption for only two groups, the lowest and the highest. The data are drawn from a household energy Consumption sample survey by Korea Energy Economics Institute in 2015. The results show the differences in socio-demographic, dwelling, and Electricity Consumption characteristics between two groups. Next, the factors affecting the household Electricity Consumption are investigated. Factor affecting the household Electricity Consumption for two groups is only the number of electrical appliances. There are also the differences in major determinants of the household Electricity Consumption for two groups. The results of this study would be useful for understanding socio-demographic, dwelling, and Electricity Consumption characteristics for two groups.

    The goal of this paper is to model the relationship between Electricity Consumption and real gross domestic product (GDP) for Malaysia in a bivariate and multivariate framework. We use time series data for the period 1971-2003 and apply the bounds testing approach to search for a long-run relationship. Our results reveal that Electricity Consumption, real GDP and price share a long-run relationship. The results of the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) estimates of long-run elasticity of Electricity Consumption on GDP are found to be around 0.7 and statistically significant. Finally, in the short-run, the results of the causality test show that there is a unidirectional causal flow from Electricity Consumption to economic growth in Malaysia. From these findings we conclude that Malaysia is an energy-dependent country, leading us to draw some policy implications. This paper adds support and validity, thus reducing the policy makers concern on the ambiguity of the Electricity and growth nexus in Malaysia.

    Abstract:

    Support Vector Regression (SVR) methodology is used to model and predict Turkey's Electricity Consumption. Among various SVR formalisms, [epsilon]-SVR method was used since the training pattern set was relatively small. Electricity Consumption is modeled as a function of socio-economic indicators such as population, Gross National Product, imports and exports. In order to facilitate future predictions of Electricity Consumption, a separate SVR model was created for each of the input variables using their current and past values; and these models were combined to yield Consumption prediction values. A grid search for the model parameters was performed to find the best [epsilon]-SVR model for each variable based on Root Mean Square Error. Electricity Consumption of Turkey is predicted until 2026 using data from 1975 to 2006. The results show that Electricity Consumption can be modeled using Support Vector Regression and the models can be used to predict future Electricity Consumption.
