Multi-objective Urban Electricity Network Transition Considering Generation Retirement

These challenges are also known as the energy trilemma, which means the system planner cannot find a planning decision achieving the minimum cost, risk and emission simultaneously. This paper proposes a multi-objective planning model to find the Pareto optimal solutions, and trade-off decisions among the above conflicting objectives. The transition process includes the retirement of aging coal-fired units, building new renewable generation and transmission lines. Also, the carbon emission flow model is applied in the planning process to calculate carbon emissions from the demand side. A new risk index is designed considering probability and severity of the corrective control (CC) actions caused by both wind output forecast errors and outages of system components. A relatively new multi-objective natural aggregation algorithm (MONAA) is introduced and applied to find the optimal solution. The proposed model is verified on a modified IEEE 24-bus RTS system.

Low-carbon Electricity Network Transition Considering Retirement of Aging Coal Generators

Retirement and replacement of aging coal-fired power plants (CFPP) is the ma-jor part of Electricity Network transition. However, the sudden retirement of large aging CFPP could lead to power supply or reserve shortages and generally, it takes several years to com-plete the replacement process. This paper proposes a low-carbon Electricity Network transition model, helping to plan aging CFPP retirement and replacement as well as renewable power plants installation. Network augmentation in the transi-tion process is also considered. The trade-off decisions are found among three conflicting objectives including cost, risk and car-bon emission. Moreover, the carbon emission flow (CEF) model is applied in the planning process to calculate carbon emissions from the demand side, in order to assess the efficacy of the low-carbon transition. A relatively new multi-objective natural aggregation algorithm (MONAA) is applied to find the optimal solution. The proposed model is verified on a modified IEEE 24-bus RTS system. According to the numerical results, the proposed model can effectively provide a roadmap to guide the energy Network transformation.
