    This may be the most important chapter in this book. In fact, if someone learns everything else in the book, but does not learn the material in this chapter, that person would be a failure in the security industry. Life Safety is the most important element of security. The most basic core element of all security is to protect life first, whether in regards to Access Control or preventing workplace violence or terrorism. This chapter discusses the apparent conflict between security and life safety principles and how they should be resolved. We will discuss national and local life safety codes and regulations and how they apply to Electronic Access Control systems. We will talk about how locks and exit devices affect life safety.

    There have been five generations of alarm/Access Control systems. With each movement from one generation to the next, major changes in architecture and capabilities occurred. If you look through the lens of history, you can see into the future through the pathway the industry has taken. From the first generation to the fifth there have been sweeping changes in the industry. Although the fifth generation has yet to realize its full potential (and for many manufacturers this may never happen), the promise of current technology is amazing. By the end of this chapter you will understand fully what the current generation’s technology will be capable of at some point in the future. Much of the information in this chapter is derived from Chapter 3, How Electronic Access Control systems work, of my book Integrated Security Systems Design, written in 2007. For those readers who are interested in systems design, this book is a good reference manual.

    Biometric Systems provide improved security over traditional Electronic Access Control methods such as RFID tags, Electronic keypads and some mechanical locks. The user's authorized card or password pin can be lost or stolen. In order for the biometrics to be ultra-secure and to provide more-than-average accuracy, more than one form of biometric identification is required. Hence the need arises for the use of multimodal biometrics. This uses a combination of different biometric recognition technologies. This chapter begins with the basic idea of Biometrics, Biometrics System with its components, Working and proceeds with the need of Multimodal Biometrics with the emphasis on review of various multimodal systems based on fusion ways and fusion level of various features. The last section of this chapter describes various multimodal Biometric Systems.

    The Access Control system is the most exposed component of an Electronic security program. Employees, contractors, customers, and visitors are all aware of Electronic Access Control system. Normally the employees utilize the system via a badge every day to gain Access to their work area. The employee badge is typically composed of a picture, company logo/name, employee's name, and a technology to provide a unique identification (ID). The contractor may have a badge with or without a picture or picture and ID technology. Either way, the contractor will be impacted by the quality of the Access Control system. A customer or a visitor are often “badged” at a lobby and escorted through the facility. The Access Control system will have an impact on the customer and/or visitor as to the quality and thoroughness of the security program.
