Raven-II: An open platform for surgical robotics research

Glozman, Jacob Rosen, Ji Ma, Lei Cheng, Lee WhiteAbstract:The Raven-II is a platform for collaborative research on advances in surgical robotics. Seven universities have begun research using this platform. The Raven-II system has two 3-DOF spherical positioning mechanisms capable of attaching interchangeable four DOF instruments. The Raven-II software is based on open standards such as Linux and ROS to maximally facilitate software development. The mechanism is robust enough for repeated experiments and animal surgery experiments, but is not engineered to sufficient safety standards for human use. Mechanisms in place for interaction among the user community and dissemination of results include an Electronic Forum, an online software SVN repository, and meetings and workshops at major robotics conferences.

Community Building Through Electronic Discussion Boards: Pre-Service Teachers' Reflective Dialogues on Science Teaching

The thesis of this paper is to model the notion of community building for teacher reflective practice. Through pre-service teachers' WebCT postings on “students' theories” in science, we provide evidence of how WebCT discussion board served as a Forum for community building to carry out reflective practice. We conclude that WebCT discussion board can serve as a viable tool for building a community of reflective teachers. This study implies that WebCT and similar Internet Electronic discussion tools may be effectively used for community building to carry out reflective dialogues in teacher education.

Questions about whether Internet and the global communication accessibility may be considered as a fundamental aspect in the medicine of today and tomorrow have been brought up. OBJECTIVE Discuss current and future applications of Internet to the field of Medicine and Neurology. METHODS Bibliographical review based on Medline and standard Web search engines. Forum sessions performed through Internet by means of Web-Chat. Forum coordination entirely performed by Electronic mail. RESULTS There are several opinions regarding the influence of Internet on Medicine and Neurology. Currently, the communication and collaboration between teams is improving. It allows scientific publications on-line, improves continuous remote training and facilitates information to patients. New applications like telemedicine need more development. CONCLUSIONS Currently, Internet represents an efficient tool for collaboration, training and distribution of information in the field of Medicine and Neurology.
