    Abstract:

    Abstract With a fast growing market in multimedia and internet industries, the demand for corresponding key optical electronic devices in optical communication systems, optical input/output, optical storage, and liquid crystal displays has been rising, thus spurring the development of related industries. Not only does the Taiwanese opto-Electronics Industry have a bright future, but huge investments in the area have also boosted the industries of LED (laser emitting diode), scanners, and CD-ROM in Taiwan, which are now ranked in the top three worldwide in terms of their revenues. However, the cost of CD-ROM production cannot be easily reduced due to the high cost of imported key components (e.g. pick-up head and IC components mainly from Japan), which seriously affect the competitiveness of the Industry. It is estimated that the opto Electronics Industry in Taiwan is about 3–4 years behind that of Japan technology-wise with the revenue also far below that of Japan. In recent years, many huge investment projects in Taiwan have attracted attention from domestic and overseas Taiwanese professionals, who have been aggressively devoting themselves into development of new technology. It is therefore easy to be very optimistic about the enormous potential development in the Taiwanese opto-electronic Industry which has a solid foundation and is under-developed. This article analyzes the current situation of the opto-Electronics Industry, using the Delphi method to forecast future developments of the Taiwanese opto-electronic Industry up to the year 2010. The simulated results will be a reference to those who are interested in studying the future of the opto-Electronics Industry in Taiwan.

    Abstract:

    This chapter outlines the development of China's Electronics Industry. China was a late starter in developing its Electronics industries. However, significant progress has been made through the implementation of a series of national development plans and government programs. Recent achievements in the Electronics field demonstrate China's entry as a world-class player. In 2005, China's high-tech exports totaled US$220B; accounting for 28% of the country's total out-bound shipments, and Electronics played a large role in this. China's national economic goal-setting and planning mechanism is the “Five-Year Plan” (FYP). The development of the country's Electronics capabilities has hinged on its ability to define and achieve reasonable goals in the FYPs. The Ministry of Information Industries was created on March 1998 by merging the former Ministry of Post and Telecommunications. China is now allowing foreign companies to invest in China via contractual agreements, joint ventures, and foreign direct investments. Export orientation is a salient feature of China's Electronics Industry, which leads the nation in manufacturing products trade. The China National Electronics Import and Export Corporation (CEIEC) is the main import/export channel for China's Electronics products. National planning of major Electronics projects called “Golden Projects” has been implemented to modernize the country's information technology infrastructure and help local industries.

  • Life cycle management in the consumer Electronics Industry

    End producers in the consumer Electronics Industry are being confronted with environmental policies of governments and international authorities (EC) that include the transfer of responsibility for the end-of-life-treatment to them. The general aim of these policies is to reduce the environmental impact of consumer Electronics by reducing both the amount of waste and the potential environmental risk of consumer Electronics waste. Improved product design and life cycle analysis are useful tools in this respect, but they are not sufficient. Effective waste reduction requires changes in the production chain. Both technological and organizational innovations in the production chain are required. Such an approach could be called 'life cycle management'. The proposed paper aims to argue that end producers in the consumer Electronics Industry can and do have to play a role of 'chain director/coordinator', that is to use their dominant position in the Industry in order to stimulate the adjustment between environmentally conscious product design and waste minimization by recycling. Developments in the Netherlands indicate that the consumer Electronics Industry is already moving in this direction. From the perspective of life cycle management the paper tries to connect industrial technology development in materials use and product design of televisions and changes in the structure of the consumer Electronics Industry.

    The Electronics Industry provides components and capabilities that are critical to modern defence requirements. It is anticipated that the effectiveness of both weapons systems and the command and control network that supports military operations will become increasingly dependent upon the Electronics sub-systems they employ in the future. With the ascendancy of 'network centric warfare', it seems certain that defence Electronics will continue to grow in importance in the future, enabling far-reaching advances in military capability and efficiency. Yet little is known about the structure, conduct, performance and competitiveness of the UK defence Electronics sector as it prepares to meet the challenges ahead. This paper reports the findings of a study commissioned in 2002 by Intellect, the UK defence Electronics trade association, and supported by the Department of Trade and Industry. The UK defence Electronics Industry is found to be a high technology, R&D-intensive and decreasing cost Industry, which is competitive in world defence markets. The UK Industry faces major competitive threats in the future from established US and European firms and from potential new entrants from China, India, Israel, Singapore, South Korea and Turkey. The future competitiveness of the UK defence Electronics Industry will depend on maintaining both technical advantage and open access to the large US market.
