Demersal Continental Shelf and Upper Slope Cephalopod Assemblages from the Balearic Sea (North-Western Mediterranean). Biological Aspects of Some Deep-Sea Species

Cluster analysis of these data gave as a result two main groups 50–200 m and 200–800 m each subdivided into two other groups (50–100 vs. 100–200 m and 200–600 vs. 600–800 m). These results suggested the existence of two assemblages that could be associated to the continental shelf (50–100 m) and the upper slope (600–800 m) separated by a wide transitional zone (100–600 m) representing a region of overlapping shelf and slope faunas (ecotone). The faunistic bathymetric gradient showed a continuous substitution of species with depth rather than discrete assemblages separated by distinct boundaries. The more coastal species such as Eledone Moschata, Loligo vulgarisSepia officinalis and Octopus vulgaris were found on the continental shelf; on the transitional zone, apart from species characteristic of this zone (Illex coindetii, Sepietta oweniana, Rossia macrosoma, Scaeurgus unicirrhus and Pteroctopus tetracirrhus), we also observed species from both the continental shelf and slope. The upper slope was characterized by typical species of deeper waters, such asBathypolypus sponsalis , Histioteuthis reversa, H. bonnellii, Ancistroteuthis lichtensteinii andOnychoteuthis banksii . The octopod O. vulgaris was the dominant species on the continental shelf and upper transitional zone, being substituted by T. sagittatus on the lower transitional zone and upper slope. Mean biomass decreased abruptly from the continental shelf to the transitional zone and from there to the upper slope. Mean species richness and species diversity were higher in the transitional zone than in the continental shelf and upper slope. Finally, some biological aspects of the more abundant deep-sea cephalopod species are studied: Bathypolypus sponsalis, Octopus salutii,Pteroctopus tetracirrhus , Histioteuthis reversa and H. bonnellii.

The analysis of the size–frequency distribution followed the growth of specimens from January (6–7 cm ML) to August (11–12 cm ML). The sex ratio was estimated for each season and it was not significantly different from 1 : 1 in any of them. The stomach contents revealed that the octopus fed predominantly on crustaceans and fishes. Another octopus species, Eledone Moschata , is present in this fishery but its catches were clearly lower than those of O. vulgaris . The analysis of the importance of these two species in relation to the rest of the commercial catch showed that octopuses represent between 20–40% of the total catch for trawlers. The highest catch rates (kg/h) were obtained in spring and at the beginning of summer. Time-series analysis of monthly catches from January 1981 to August 1996 showed two main oscillations. The lower one, with a periodicity of 12 months, reflects the annual biological cycle of the species; on the other hand, the higher one has a periodicity of 92 months, the time series available being too short to confirm the significance of this period.

Concentrations and composition of organochlorine contaminants in different species of cephalopod molluscs from the Italian waters (Adriatic Sea).

MarcotrigianoAbstract:Persistent organochlorines, such as polychlorinated biphenyls including coplanar congeners and DDT compounds were measured in the liver of different species of mollusc cephalopods: broadtail squid (Illex coindetii), horned octopus (Eledone Moschata) and spider octopus (Octopus salutii) collected in two different areas of the Adriatic Sea (central and southern Adriatic Sea). The concentration of PCBs exceeded DDT ones in horned octopus (PCBs: 617.0 ngg(-1) lipid weight, DDTs: 188.0 ngg(-1) lipid weight) and in spider octopus (PCBs: 590.0 ngg(-1) lipid weight, DDTs: 293.0 ngg(-1) lipid weight), while in broadtail squid PCB load (748.0 ngg(-1) lipid weight) was similar to those of DDTs (514.5 ngg(-1) lipid weight). No significant difference in PCB levels was observed among species, while DDT concentrations were higher in broadtail squid than in horned octopus and spider octopus. DDTs composition showed slight differences in relation to species, thought p,p'-DDE was the predominant compound in all cephalopod species (broadtail squid: 88.1%, horned octopus 94.1%, spider octopus: 97.5%). PCB isomer profiles were similar among species being hexachlorinated isomers the most abundant, followed by penta- and heptachlorobiphenyls, while tri- and tetrachlorobiphenyls made up a small percentage of the total PCB residues. Regarding coplanar congeners, non-ortho PCBs were below the detection limit in all samples and the 2,3,7,8-TCDD toxic equivalent (TEQ) concentrations were very low. The influence of biological and ecological factors (size/weight and location) on the bioaccumulation of organochlorine compounds has been discussed.

MarcotrigianoAbstract:Mercury and cadmium concentrations were measured in the flesh and liver (or hepatopancreas) of albacore (Thunnus alalunga) and horned octopus (Eledone Moschata) to establish whether the concentrations exceeded the maximum levels fixed by the European Commission. In both species, mercury and cadmium mean concentrations were higher in liver (albacore: mercury = 2.41 μg g−1 wet wt, cadmium = 9.22 μg g−1 wet wt; horned octopus: mercury = 0.76 μg g−1 wet wt, cadmium = 6.72 μg g−1 wet wt) than in flesh (albacore: mercury = 1.56 μg g−1 wet wt, cadmium = 0.05 μg g−1 wet wt; horned octopus: mercury = 0.36 μg g−1 wet wt, cadmium = 0.33 μg g−1). Mercury concentrations exceeding the prescribed legal limit of 1 μg g−1 wet wt were found in almost all albacore samples (flesh: 71.4%; liver: 85.7%). Mis Ahtapot (Eledone Moschata Lamarck, 1799)'ta (Cephalopoda: Octopoda) Yapay Yuva Kullanımı.

Denemeler 13.6±1.5°C sıcaklıkta, ‰37 tuzlulukta ve doğal fotoperiyotta yapılmıştır. Doğadan yakalanan toplam 7 adet mis ahtapot deneme tankına konulmuştur ve 48 saat süre ile ortama adapte edilmiştir. İkinci 48 saat, tanka, birey sayısı kadar, 63 mm ve 90 mm çapa sahip, 150 mm uzunlukta açık gri PVC tüpler konulmuştur. Üçüncü 48 saat, ahtapot sayısı kadar, seçilen PVC tüp ebatında siyah PVC tüpler tank ortamına yerleştirilmiştir. E. Moschata bireylerinin 90 mm çapındaki PVC tüpleri seçtiği, ancak renk ayırımı yapmadığı ve deneme süresi içinde %57 oranında yuvalandığı tespit edilmişti

Toplam 471 birey ölçülmüş ve dolu veya kısmi dolu mideleri %6’lık formaldehitte saklanmıştır ve daha sonra laboratuarda incelenmiştir. Mide doluluk de-recesi yakalanma zamanı bilinen 471 bireyden (369 mide sabah saat 09.00’da; 102 mide öğlen saat 12:00’de) tahmin edilmiştir. Mide içerikleri mikroskobik olarak incelenmiş ve yem kate-gorileri en yüksek taksonomik seviyede tanımlanabilmiştir. Mide içeriği analizleri mis ahtapo-tun başlıca krustaselerle beslendiğini göstermiştir.The aim of the preliminary study was to determine the feeding preference of the musky octo-pus (Eledone Moschata) from its natural habitats. A total of 471 specimens were measured and their fully or partially full stomachs were fixed in 6% formaldehyde, and then analyzed in the laboratory. The degree of stomach fullness was estimated from 471 individuals, their capture times were precisely known (369 stomachs at 09:00 in morning; 102 stomachs at 12:00 in mid-day). Stomach contents were examined microscopically and prey categories could be identified in higher taxonomic level. Efficacy of 2-phenoxyethanol as an anaesthetic for the musky octopus, Eledone Moschata (Lamarck 1799), (Cephalopoda: Octopodidae).

Tansel TanrıkulAbstract:The efficacy of 2-phenoxyethanol (2-PhOH) as an anaesthetic for the musky octopus, Eledone Moschata (Lamarck, 1799), was examined. Different doses (1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, and 1.8 mL L-1) of 2-PhOH were prepared in 20 L transparent plastic containers containing 10 L of continually aerated seawater (pH 8.2, O2 8 mg L-1, salinity 37.2 per thousand at 15.3 °C). Six individuals were used in each experiment. After quantifying the anaesthetic time for each animal, which was defined as the loss of sucking intensity (Stage A3), the specimens were transferred to a plastic recovery tank (430 L of aerated seawater), defined as regular breathing (Stage R4; 12-13 breaths min-1), where they were observed for 48 h to document any mortality. There were significant differences in induction and recovery time among the various 2-PhOH concentrations (ANOVA, P 0.05) and no mortality was observed within 48 h. However, 50% mortality occurred at 1 mL L-12-PhOH within 24 h after anaesthesia, and 100% mortality at 1.8 mL L-1 of 2-PhOH within 48 h. Based on the recovery time, a dose of 1.6 mL L-1 of 2-PhOH was considered the most effective dose for anaesthetising the musky octopus.

Reproductive biology of Eledone Moschata (Cephalopoda: Octopodidae) in the Aegean Sea (Izmir Bay, Turkey)

Tuncay KınacıgilAbstract:Reproductive properties of Eledone Moschata from the north-eastern Aegean Sea are reported for the first time. A total of 471 specimens was collected during monthly samplings from December 2004 to November 2005. The mantle lengths of the species were between 4.5 and 15.0 cm with an average of 8.1 cm ±0.15 for 204 males, and between 2.7 and 14.0 cm with an average of 7.8 cm ±0.12 for 267 females. The annual sex ratio (males: females) of the sampled specimens was 1:1.31. Maturity stages were recorded on a monthly basis in both sexes. The highest monthly percentage of mature females (21%) and males (46%) was recorded in January 2005 and June 2005, respectively. The monthly and seasonal gonadosomatic index (GSI) results indicated that E. Moschata shows two annual reproduction peaks for each sex. For males, the first spring peak occurs in March–June and the second, autumn peak is in November. For females, the first summer peak occurs in May–June and the second, winter peak is in January, respectively. On the other hand, the reproductive season extends from November to July with two peaks in the Aegean Sea. Total oocyte stock varied from 273 to 2896 with a mean of 836 ±193 oocytes. The mean size of the oocytes was 6.26 ±0.10 mm. The maximum oocyte size found was 10.7 mm. The mean length of spermatophores was of 13.66 ±0.08 mm (range: 7.3–18.3) and their average number was 52 ±6 (range: 6–172).

Intake of essential and non-essential elements from consumption of octopus, cuttlefish and squid

Giacominelli-stufflerAbstract:Total concentrations of essential (Cu, Zn, Se and Cr) and non-essential (Hg, Cd, Pb and As) trace elements were measured in the flesh and hepatopancreas of Octopodidae (Eledone Moschata, Eledone cirrhosa, Octopus salutii), Sepiidae (Sepia elegans, Sepia orbignyana) and Loliginidae (Illex coindeti, Loligo vulgaris) from the Mediterranean Sea. As expected, the hepatopancreas showed higher metal concentrations than flesh; the only exceptions were Hg and As, which were equally distributed in the two tissues. Regarding the edible portion, the highest toxic metal concentrations were in Octopodidae (Hg: 0.44, Cd: 0.49, Pb: 0.10 µg g−1 wet weight) and Sepiidae (Hg: 0.27, Cd: 0.50, Pb: 0.12 µg g−1 wet weight), while Loliginidae tended to accumulate less metal, especially Hg (Hg: 0.11, Cd: 0.30, Pb: 0.05 µg g−1 wet weight).
