Methods Postoperative radiographs of 117 patients who underwent anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty with three different implant designs (stemmed spherical, stemless spherical, and stemless Elliptical) were analyzed for landmarks that represented the prearthritic state and final implant position. We assessed the change in center of rotati7on and humeral Head height on the anteroposterior view and the percentage of prosthesis overhang on the axillary lateral view. A modified anatomic reconstruction index, a compound score that rated each of the 3 parameters from 0 to 2, was created to determine the overall accuracy of the reconstruction. Results Excellent modified anatomic reconstruction index scores (5 or 6 points) were achieved by 68.1% of the cases in the stemless Elliptical group compared with 33.3% of the cases in the stemless spherical group and by 28.3% of the cases in the stemmed spherical group (P = .001).The mean difference in restoration of humeral Head height (P < .001) and percentage of prosthesis overhang (P < .001) was superior for the stemless Elliptical group compared with the two other spherical Head groups. There was no difference between groups for the shift in center of rotation (P = .060). Conclusions In this radiographic investigation comparing three different humeral Head designs with respect to anatomic restoration parameters, the stemless Elliptical implant more closely restored the geometry of the prearthritic humeral Head as assessed by humeral Head height, prosthesis overhang, and a compound reconstruction score.

Journal of Arthroplasty, 2001Co-Authors: James M Hartford, Michael D Lauffenburger, Herbert KauferAbstract:A total of 93 patients (95 hips) undergoing unipolar noncemented Elliptical Head endoprosthetic replacement for an acute displaced femoral neck fracture were reviewed clinically and radiographically at an average follow-up of 28 months. The 12-month mortality rate was 22%. The medical complication rate was 15%, and the surgical complication rate was 19%. At most recent follow-up, 66% of patients used an assist device for ambulation or were nonambulatory. Of patients, 64% required full-time nursing care. Radiographically, subsidence of the component was identified in 66% of the hips and acetabular erosion in 29%. More than half of these patients had complaints of either thigh or groin pain. Hips with evidence of subsidence had a statistically significant greater length of follow-up (36 months) compared with hips that did not show subsidence (18 months; P = .014). Noncemented unipolar replacement for displaced femoral neck fractures is an accepted form of treatment. In this group of predominantly male patients, noncemented Elliptical Head unipolar replacement was associated with a high medical and surgical complication rate as well as poor clinical and radiographic results.

stereo based Elliptical Head tracking

Employing stereo vision makes the tracker robust to many factors such as clutter, color and lighting variations, that affect contemporary Head trackers. The Head is modeled as an ellipse and tracking is performed on the foreground obtained by modeling depth. This is facilitated by using stereo vision. Further, we present a simple Head size estimation technique that is critical for modeling considerable motion by the subject. The results obtained demonstrate the robustness of the Head tracker and the accuracy of the Head-size estimation technique. This would find extensive use in speaker tracking in smart rooms.
