  • Body in Mind: The Role of Embodied Cognition in Self‐Regulation

    Abstract:

    We review a growing body of literature that evidences the reciprocal relationship between body and mind, known as Embodied Cognition. We argue that an Embodied mind may serve a functional purpose, aiding in self-regulatory processes. Specifically, we suggest that Embodied Cognition assists in self-regulation by increasing signal strength, encouraging appropriate goal-relevant action, and incorporating situational constraints to cue appropriate information processing styles. Furthermore, we propose that affect serves as the link between an Embodied mind and self-regulatory action. Finally, we situate this research in debates on theories of mind, and we advocate for a highly interactive system that integrates information across modalities.

  • Embodied Cognition Design. Experimental pedagogy between Embodied Cognition and architectural space

    Abstract:

    The design and redevelopment of school learning environments according to the scientific paradigm of the Embodied Cognition, (Gomez Paloma, 2013) will use a future dialogue between Cognition and Architecture, between Neurofenomenology and Design. To launch a new experimental challenge in the world of school, the new paradigm of Embodied Cognition Design (ECD) is emerging (Gomez Paloma & Calo, 2017). The research group, in addition to defining the ECD conceptual scientific frame work, which will be shown in the present paper, is developing an experimental protocol to analyze the perception level of the school actors (teachers, students, parents, managers) of such paradigmatic dialogue. The time has come to reconfigure, at architectural and bodily level, the same educational reality of the student by starting directly from the structural context.

    Abstract:

    Embodied Cognition (EC) is an interdisciplinary and multiperspective scientific theory whose characteristic, from a cultural and professional perspective, opens up interesting scenarios in the field of psychopedagogy. In particular, a prolific and extremely interesting area of study is now provided by the contribution of EC to the world of didactics (Caruana & Borghi, 2013). This work is part of this research horizon, investigating how the key principles of Embodied Cognition offer new opportunities to enhance differences in learning processes (Gomez Paloma & Ianes, a cura di, 2014). Starting from the analysis of the body as a scientific mediator of the learning process on a neurobiological (Rizzolatti & Sinigaglia, 2006) and neurophenomenological (Gallese, 2006) level, the study focuses on the scientific evidence (Margiotta, 2014) that EC can provide to teachers in the field of didactics. It represents a concrete springboard for delineating and validating an “EC-Based” model (Gomez Paloma & Damiani, 2015) to enhance corporeality as a cognitive system and a learning/ contextualization setting for the building of professional skills in the field of education.
