European Vehicle Emission Legislation—Present and Future
Topics in Catalysis, 2001Co-Authors: Paul GreeningAbstract:The Commission's Auto-Oil programme provided a framework for the development of future Emission standards for motor vehicles based on sound science, technology capability, environmental need and cost effectiveness. Proposals developed from the results of the Auto-Oil programme paved the way for the agreement within the European Union of new Emission standards for passenger cars, light commercial vehicles and heavy duty vehicles. These will be applied from 2000, 2005 and 2005, together with complimentary measures on fuel quality to take effect from 2000 and 2005. While decisions reached in the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament have, to some extent, circumvented the Auto-Oil II programme, the programme has continued the co-operative approach to future Legislation by developing a coherent strategy to permit the achievement of necessary air quality targets at the lowest cost for society.

Concepts to meet non-road stage IV / Tier 4 Emission Legislation
MTZ worldwide, 2007Co-Authors: Thomas Cartus, Holger Herrmuth, Peter Scherm, Gunnar SteinAbstract:By December 2007, the EC will have to submit a new proposal for Stage IV Emission limits for Non-Road Mobile Machinery. Industry is committed to contributing to this process and has asked AVL to carry out a study as a neutral engineering company. The main topics of this study are described in this article

Urea-SCR in Automotive Applications
Topics in Catalysis, 2004Co-Authors: Pär L.t. GabrielssonAbstract:Stricter Emission Legislation for diesel vehicles will make exhaust after-treatment mandatory in the near future. Urea-SCR has been chosen for NO x reduction on trucks and busses. Since its effectiveness in reducing NO x is great, and since there is a trade-off between NO x Emissions and fuel consumption, engines can be adjusted on fuel efficiency. This review article deals with subjects such as the description of SCR catalysts, catalytic systems, system performance, choice of reducing agent and durability.

Requirements for future gasoline engines
Proceedings, 2014Co-Authors: Günter FraidlAbstract:The worldwide CO2 and fuel economy Legislations will converge on extremely low level requiring fleet-CO2 reductions of up to 45% by 2025. This not only enhances electrification and alternative fuels, but also demands break through innovations with the conventional powertrain. On top, more stringent requirements regarding the “conventional” pollutants, Particulate Number and especially the future Real Driving Emission Legislation will have a major impact both on powertrain technology but also on powertrain development, validation and in field compliance.
