Diversity increases with elevation: empidine dance flies (Diptera, Empididae) challenge a predominant pattern

They are usually species rich and often support endemic species making them prime targets for conservation effort. The aim of this study was to investigate elevational patterns of species diversity and phenology to provide a meaningful understanding of insects’ spatio-temporal distributions along a tropical gradient of elevation. Our study focuses on the Empidinae communities (Diptera, Empididae) from Doi Inthanon (north Thailand, gradient 400–2556 m asl), sampled during two entire years (2006–2007, 2014). This group of insects is more diverse in temperate localities than in the tropics and we found that: (1) increase in altitude and latitude has a similar effect, so that the diversity of our model increases with elevation; (2) the phenology is strongly influenced by seasonality with a peak of diversity occurring during the transition between the dry and rainy seasons; (3) there is no phenological shift in the diversity peak with elevations; and (4) the species composition changes along the altitudinal gradient and through the year (high beta diversity). The increase in diversity with increasing elevation and the peak of diversity occurring at the transitional period both strongly coincide with abiotic factors, the decreasing temperature and the arrival of the monsoon, respectively.

Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, 2016Co-Authors: Mirian Watts, Christophe Daugeron, Isaac S Winkler, Claudio J B De Carvalho, Steven P Turner, Brian M WiegmannAbstract:The tribe Empidini (Diptera: Empididae: Empidinae) is a diverse group with fourteen genera, seven of which are exclusive to the Neotropical region: Bolrhamphomyia Rafael, Chilerhamphomyia Rafael, Hystrichonotus Collin, Lamprempis Wheeler and Melander, Macrostomus Wiedemann, Opeatocerata Melander and Porphyrochroa Melander. Although Empidini itself is likely paraphyletic, many presumably monophyletic genera and species groups are recognized. Here, we apply DNA sequences from multiple genes to infer the phylogeny of Empidini, focusing on placing the Neotropical lineages within the entire tribe and identifying monophyletic groups. We included 98 Empidini taxa along with 18 outgrous terminals, spanning the diversity within the group. The results from the analyses performed are largely similar, with major groupings of genera in common. Specifically, the analyses recovered a monophyletic Hilarini and a paraphyletic Empidini. Most species from Chile and Argentina (Andean region) are found to belong to an early branching lineage within Empidinae, and are not monophyletic with other Empidini. A large portion of the remaining Neotropical Empidini (not Andean) comprises a single clade that includes four endemic genera and a number of Neotropical Empis Linneaus species. Macrostomus and Porphyrochroa each recovered as monophyletic and sister to one another, although generic placement of a few taxa remains uncertain due to conflicting morphological features. Lamprempis+Opeatocerata are also found to be sister-taxa in most analyses. Several large genera were found to be polyphyletic or paraphyletic including Empis and Rhamphomyia Meigen. We evaluate our findings and discuss them in light of current Empidinae taxonomy.

Empis (Xanthempis) fusca n. sp. was collected as part of the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) conducted in the Mercantour National Park between 2009 and 2011, while Rhamphomyia (Lundstroemiella) brevis n. sp. was collected in autumn 2013 at 2100 m in one of the highest passes in Europe (Col de la Bonette).

A cladistic analysis of 27 adult morphological characters was performed for Empis hyalipennis (the type-species of the subgenus Coptophlebia), and 13 Nearctic, Oriental and Palaearctic species hypothesised as being closely related, which resulted in a single tree of 31 steps (CI = 0.96; RI = 0.98). Monophyly of the group was established on the basis of two apomorphic characters of the male hypopygium. Based on these results and previous studies of the Empis-Coptophlebia complex of subgenera within the genus Empis, the E. (C.) hyalipennis-group appears to be much richer in species, exhibit greater morphological heterogeneity and be more widely distributed than expected. It is strongly recommended that any future revision of the subfamily Empidinae should apply the name Coptophlebia only to the monophyletic Empis (Coptophlebia) hyalipennis-group defined in this study.

Insect Conservation and Diversity, 2015Co-Authors: Marija Ivkovic, Adrian R PlantAbstract:We identify local hotspots of elevated species richness and endemicity of aquatic insects in the Dinarides (Balkans) using aquatic Empididae (Diptera) as models and compared observed patterns with historical geological and hydrological changes in the region. We analysed species richness and reciprocal weighted endemicity. Parsimony analysis of endemism was used to generate an historical hypothesis of the relationships between the aquatic Empididae biotas of different regions of local endemism within the Dinarides and the results reconciled with the geological and hydrological history of the region. Hotspots of high endemicity were coincident with areas of elevated species richness and were located primarily in the northwest Dinarides, central Bosnia & Herzegovina, and southeast Montenegro. Parsimony analysis of endemism retrieved three weakly supported area clades comprising areas of southeast Dinarides together with disjunct areas at the western Dinarides, and central Bosnia & Herzegovina together with the disjunct northwest Dinarides. The aquatic Empididae fauna of the northwest Dinarides has been strongly influenced by dispersal from the European Alps, whereas that at the southern end of the range may have been shaped by immigration from ranges further south. In the central Dinarides, progressive fragmentation of the hydrological network through orogenesis, karstification, redistribution of flysch deposits, and saline ingressions may underlie current diversity patterns with populations becoming increasingly isolated and focused within refugia. Hotspots of endemism and diversity are not necessarily coincident with protected areas and further work will be needed if they are to be reconciled with future planning of conservation priorities.

Such massive polymorphic asymmetry occurring with so high an incidence in a population is previously unreported. In view of the courtship behaviour of other Empidinae, we hypothesize that the oversized tarsus is a secondary sexual character employed by males for attracting females. Alternative hypotheses are also discussed. We suggest that this extraordinary new species is a potential model for the study of mating biology in Empidinae and the evolution of mating systems in general.

ZooKeys, 2017Co-Authors: Marija Ivkovic, Bogdan Horvat, Josipa Cevid, Bradley J SinclairAbstract:All records of aquatic dance flies (37 species in subfamily Clinocerinae and 10 species in subfamily Hemerodromiinae) from the territory of Greece are summarized, including previously unpublished data and data on five newly described species (Chelifera horvati Ivkovic & Sinclair, sp. n., Wiedemannia iphigeniae Ivkovic & Sinclair, sp. n., W. ljerkae Ivkovic & Sinclair, sp. n., W. nebulosa Ivkovic & Sinclair, sp. n. and W. pseudoberthelemyi Ivkovic & Sinclair, sp. n.). The new species are described and illustrated, the male terminalia of Clinocera megalatlantica (Vaillant) are illustrated and the distributions of all species within Greece are listed. The aquatic Empididae fauna of Greece consists of 47 species, with the following described species reported for the first time: Chelifera angusta Collin, Hemerodromia melangyna Collin, Clinocera megalatlantica, Kowarzia plectrum (Mik), Phaeobalia dimidiata (Loew), W. (Chamaedipsia) beckeri (Mik), W. (Philolutra) angelieri Vaillant and W. (P.) chvali Joost. A key to species of aquatic Empididae of Greece is provided for the first time. Information related to the European Ecoregions in which species were found is given. Compared to the other studied countries in the Balkans, the Greek species assemblage is most similar to that of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

The new species are described, illustrated and distribution of all species listed. Wiedemannia (Philolutra) angelieri Vaillant and W. (Roederella) ouedorum Vaillant are newly recorded in Sierra Nevada and nine species are endemic to this region. A key to all 24 species of aquatic empidids is presented.
