  • Participatory Operational & Security Assessment on homeland security risks: an Empirical Research Method for improving security beyond the borders through public/private partnerships

    Abstract:

    This paper proposes novel applications of Participatory Operational Assessment (POA), as a qualitative/Empirical tool for bridging the Research gap in our knowledge of Border Security, while supporting the mission of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security “to build in security, to ensure resilience, and to facilitate customs and exchange” (DHS 2017 ). Each year, global trade volume exceeds 10.3 billion tons of cargo, 90% of which is being carried by ships (UNCTAD 2017 ). U.S. transport networks alone import and export at least two billion metric tons of cargo, including 15 million sealed containers (CBP 2017a ). The task of DHS/CBP in safeguarding the national borders and intermodal (sea, land & air) security becomes more crucial each year, as the flow of goods grows exponentially in positive correlation with the population growth, and trade agreements, such as the NAFTA agreement between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. This paper demonstrates the development of a “Participatory Operational Assessment” instrument, where homeland security officials and industry stakeholders form a think-tank for resolving security and operational challenges on both sides of the border. Specifically, this scholarly Research funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security demonstrates the benefits of establishing a Public/Private Advisory Board in order to identify security threats on both sides of the border. This is a timely Research, as border security risks impose serious threats for homeland security, with geopolitical, economic and trade hindrances. The DHS and its Agencies (CBP, USCG, TSA etc.) have introduced numerous noteworthy initiatives, platforms and programs, including CSI, C-TPAT, TWIC etc. A number of working groups are also affiliated with the DHS, in order to address security, trade and travel issues. Inspired by the capabilities of these initiatives, this Research has created a project-specific team of experts aiming to evaluate quantitative findings on border security, and offer best industry practices.

    This paper proposes dialog-based protocol for the study of the cognitive activities during software development and evolution. The dialog-based protocol, derived from the idea of pair programming, is a significant alternative to the common think-aloud protocol, because it lessens the Hawthorne and placebo effects. Ihr empirischer Forschungsstil ist an der Grounded-Theory-Methodologie (GTM) sowie der Situationsanalyse ausgerichtet. Es wird mit diesen Mitteln ein dichtes Netz von Handlungs- und Bedeutungsebenen im sozialen Mikro- und Makroradius herausgearbeitet, in dem ein profanes Problem wie das häusliche Heizen verortet ist. In dieser Besprechung werden einige Methodologisch-Methodische Knackpunkte der Untersuchung kritisch besprochen. Die Autorin findet interessante Lösungen für Darstellungs- und Modellbildungs-Probleme, die für GTM-Studien charakteristisch sind.In her monograph, Ursula OFFENBERGER addresses the negotiation of heating technology arrangements in a family home as a form of construction of the home and domestic coziness in the context of gender relations. Her Empirical Research Method is aligned with grounded theory Methodology (GTM) and situational analysis. She elaborates a complex network of actions and meanings on the social microlevels and macrolevels that are implicated in mundane issues such as domestic heating.   • Exploring service-oriented system engineering challenges: a systematic literature review

    Abstract:

    Service-oriented system engineering (SOSE) has drawn increasing attention since service-oriented computing was introduced in the beginning of this decade. A large number of SOSE challenges that call for special software engineering efforts have been proposed in the Research community. Our goal is to gain insight into the current status of SOSE Research issues as published to date. To this end, we conducted a systematic literature review exploring SOSE challenges that have been claimed between January 2000 and July 2008. This paper presents the results of the systematic review as well as the Empirical Research Method we followed. In this review, of the 729 publications that have been examined, 51 were selected as primary studies, from which more than 400 SOSE challenges were elicited. By applying qualitative data analysis Methods to the extracted data from the review, we proved our hypotheses about the classification scheme. We are able to conclude that the SOSE challenges can be classified along two dimensions: (a) based on themes (or topics) that they cover and (b) based on characteristics (or types) that they reveal. By analyzing the distribution of the SOSE challenges on the topics and types in the years 2000–2008, we are able to point out the trend in SOSE Research activities. The findings of this review further provide Empirical evidence for establishing future SOSE Research agendas.

  • Determinants of Consumer Environment Boycott Behavior: Based on the Theory of Planned Behavior

    Abstract. This paper aims to study on the basis of previous literature and uses the theory of planned behavior to understand and predict consumers ’ environment boycott behavior from green consumption perspective. This paper adopts Empirical Research Method and finds that consumers sense of environment protection, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control have significantly positive effects on making green purchase decisions and taking boycott behavior intention into action, while consumers ’ perceived cost have significantly negative effects on the intention of boycott behavior. This Research is also a creative application of the theory of planned behavior. Literature References Green Consumption. There is a variety of definition on green consumption at home and abroad. Ottman thought green consumption is a kind of individual behavior buying green products for the purpose which is to protect themselves and the earth [1]. This study defined green consumption as in order to keep health, protect environment and undertake social responsibility, consumer adopting a way of rational consumption to reduce the wasting of resources and prevent the pollution during the consumption process [2]
