Mafia rules. The role of criminal codes in mafia Organizations
Scandinavian Journal of Management, 2015Co-Authors: Maurizio CatinoAbstract:Abstract How can Organizations that lack mechanisms of legal dispute resolution and cannot create binding contracts work efficiently? They establish and enforce Organizational rules. Rules are an essential aspect in the life of any Organization, and they are even more important for criminal Organizations because they serve to regulate interaction among dishonest people. Using a wide range of sources, this article analyzes the role of rules in mafias, in particular in the Sicilian “Cosa Nostra” and the American “La Cosa Nostra”. The main contribution of this paper is to unveil the Organizational rationality of mafia rules. Through a comprehensive analysis of the few written, and several unwritten rules, I find that rules in mafias serve three main goals: (1) to Ensure Organization, coordination, and cooperation among members; (2) to settle conflicts and contain violence; and (3) to maintain secrecy and conceal information.

Digital transformation : Five recommendations for the digitally conscious firm
'Elsevier BV', 2020Co-Authors: Saarikko Ted, Westergren, Ulrika H., Blomquist TomasAbstract:Digital transformation is one of the key challenges facing contemporary businesses. The need to leverage digital technology to develop and implement new business models forces firms to reevaluate existing capabilities, structures, and culture in order to identify what technologies are relevant and how they will be enacted in Organizational processes and business offerings. More often than not, these profound changes require firms to revisit old truths as they develop strategies that thread the needle between beneficial innovation and harmful disruption. This article uses the Internet of Things (IoT) as a backdrop to demonstrate the concerns associated with transformative technologies and offers five recommendations as to how firms can develop the strategies needed for digital transformation and become digitally conscious: (1) Start small and build on firsthand benefits; (2) team up and create competitive advantage from brand recognition; (3) engage in standardization efforts; (4) take responsibility for data ownership and ethics; and (5) own the change and Ensure Organization-wide commitment. As such, this article shows that digital transformation should be a top management priority and a defining trait of corporate business strategy, and that by becoming digitally conscious, firms may get a head start on their transformation journey

Fuzzy simulation of Organizational adjustment processes management based on heat supply balanced scorecard
Innovative Infrastructure Solutions, 2021Co-Authors: Gulmira D. Bazil, Shinar K. Adilova, Laulasyn K. Abzhanova, Laura A. Sugurova, Mira E. YerzhanovaAbstract:Simulation Organizational adjustment management processes in the balanced scorecard (BSC) of the city district heating using fuzzy logic methods. The work engaged a system of balanced scorecard as a tool for strategic performance management, which allows tracking the implementation of heat supply tasks. Adaptive management was used to Ensure Organization alignment with changing conditions of external environment. Process modeling was performed by fuzzy sets using the developed base of expert rules. An adaptive model of BSC managing has been developed taking into account changes in the external environment based on a program-modular approach to managing socio-economic systems. A quantitative assessment of the variables and parameters of the mathematical model of Organizational adjustment using the mathematical tool of the fuzzy sets theory are carried out. Work was implemented with indicators of heat supply, for which the BSC was developed, taking into account structural and production features of the enterprise. Proposed adaptation system is an adequate (in the above conditions) tool for studying the processes of controlled Organizational adjustment in order to adapt the internal environment of the Organization to changes in the external environment.
