It is therefore a widely used technique valuable to assess certain aspects of organizations, as for example business processes. A maturity assessment can enable stakeholders to clearly identify strengths and improvement points, and prioritize actions in order to reach higher maturity levels. Doing maturity assessments can range from simple self-assessment questionnaires to full-blown assessment methods, such as those recommended by the ISO/IEC TS 33030 or the SEI SCAMPI. A main caveat of these assessments is the resources they encompass. In addition, many times the lack of automation renders benchmarks not possible. Assuming that the wide spread of enterprise architecture practices is making the modeling of business domains a fact, and considering the recent state of the art on the representation of those models as ontologies, this paper proposes how existing semantic technology can be used to automate TOGAF ADM maturity assessment of organizations by automating the analysis of enterprise architecture models in ArchiMate.

The motivation of this paper is, therefore, to investigate to what extent ontology matching techniques can be used as a means to improve the execution of automated analysis of EA model representations, based on the syntax, structure and semantic heterogeneities of these models. For that, we used AgreementMakerLight, an ontology matching system, to evaluate the matching of EA models based on the ArchiMate and BPMN languages.

In that sense, the models should provide the necessary information for articulated decision-making, which, in complex scenarios, can result in the overwhelming complexity of the architecture descriptions. The complexity of the models might render manual analysis practically impossible, hence the appearance of automated analysis proposals throughout the years. Ontologies are a means for formally describing domain models, adding unambiguous meaning to its terms and relations. Moreover, ontologies provide computational inference mechanisms which can be used for the analysis of domain models. This work discusses the use of ontologies for EA analysis, focusing on the particular case of description logics. For that purpose, a survey on analysis approaches is performed and the reasoning features provided by description logics are matched to the different types of EA analysis. Based on such findings, a set of constructs is proposed for the representation, integration, and analysis of EA models. Finally, a demonstration of such constructs applied in compliance analysis is performed using an example scenario.

This proposal uses ontology engineering techniques to specify and integrate the different domains and reasoning and querying as a means to analyse the models. The utility of the proposal is shown through an evaluation scenario that involve the analysis of an enterprise architecture model that spans multiple domains.

Beyond technical solutions, social factors are of utmost importance to implement a successful EA initiative. Institutional theory has for example been employed to understand crucial factors for realizing EA Management (EAM) benefits through architectural thinking. Yet, it remains unclear how these social factors influence a federated approach for EA model management. Based on a socio-technical systems perspective, we investigate success factors for Federated EA model Management (FEAMM) by conducting qualitative interviews with industry experts. Our findings suggest that success factors for FEAMM are related to the model sources, modeling instruments, and model integration aspects from a technical perspective as well as to organizational grounding, governance, enforcement, efficiency, goal alignment, and trust from a social perspective.

A Federated Approach to enterprise architecture model Maintenance
2007Co-Authors: Ronny Fischer, Stephan Aier, Robert WinterAbstract:enterprise architecture is gaining acceptance as an approach to manage change and foster IT/business alignment by (1) propagating strategy and process changes to the software and infrastructure level, by (2) supporting consistent business transformation enabled by technology innovations, and by (3) decoupling business-oriented and technology-oriented architectures. Due to constant change in business as well as in technology, enterprise architecture management is a permanent process rather than a one-time effort. To keep enterprise architecture models up-to-date, a well-engineered maintenance concept including processes, roles and schedules is needed. This paper discusses the shortcomings of existing approaches to enterprise architecture model maintenance, proposes a federated approach, and reports on its implementation at a large financial service provider.
