Life Cycle assessment of frozen cod fillets including fishery specific environmental impacts
International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment, 2003Co-Authors: Friederike Ziegler, Per Nilsson, Berit Mattsson, Yvonne WaltherAbstract:Goal, Scope and Background The purpose of the present study was to perform an environmental assessment for the Entire Life Cycle of a seafood product and to include fishery-specific types of environmental impact in inventory and assessment. Environmental data for a frozen block of cod fillets was collected and used for a Life Cycle Assessment, including the fishery-specific environmental aspects seafloor use and biological extraction of target, by-catch and discard species. The fishery takes place in the Baltic Sea where cod is mainly fished by benthic trawls and gillnets.

Life Cycle greenhouse gas emissions of anesthetic drugs
Anesthesia & Analgesia, 2012Co-Authors: Jodi D Sherman, Vanessa Lamers, Matthew J EckelmanAbstract:BACKGROUND:Anesthesiologists must consider the Entire Life Cycle of drugs in order to include environmental impacts into clinical decisions. In the present study we used Life Cycle assessment to examine the climate change impacts of 5 anesthetic drugs: sevoflurane, desflurane, isoflurane, nitrous ox

a Life Cycle greenhouse gas inventory of a tree production system
International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment, 2012Co-Authors: Alissa Kendall, Gregory E McphersonAbstract:Purpose This study provides a detailed, process-based Life Cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory of an ornamental tree production system for urban forestry. The success of large-scale tree planting initiatives for climate protection depends on projects being net sinks for CO2 over their Entire Life Cycle. However, previous assessments of urban tree planting initiatives have not accounted for the inputs required for tree production in nurseries, which include greenhouse systems, irrigation, and fertilization. A GHG inventory of nursery operations for tree production is a necessary step to assess the Life Cycle benefits or drawbacks of large-scale tree planting activities.

optimization of thermal insulation to achieve energy savings in low energy house refurbishment
Energy Conversion and Management, 2014Co-Authors: Milorad Bojic, Marko Miletic, Ljubisa BojicAbstract:Abstract Due to the current environmental situation, saving energy and reducing CO 2 emission have become the leading drive in modern research. For buildings that require heating, one of the solutions is to optimize a thickness of their thermal insulation and thus improve energy efficiency and reduce energy needs. In this paper, for a small residential house in Serbia, an optimization in the thickness of its thermal insulation layer is investigated by using EnergyPlus software and Hooke–Jeeves direct search method. The embodied energy of thermal insulation is taken into account. The optimization is done for the Entire Life Cycle of thermal insulation. The results show the optimal thickness of thermal insulation that yields the minimum primary energy consumption.
