    Abstract:

    Life Cycle Assessment is a tool to assess, in a systematic way, the Environmental Aspects and its potential Environmental impacts and resources used throughout a product's life cycle. It is widely accepted and considered as one of the most powerful tools to support decision-making processes used in ecodesign and sustainable production in order to learn about the most problematic parts and life cycle phases of a product and to have a projection for future improvements. However, since Life Cycle Assessment is a cost and time intensive method, companies do not intend to carry out a full version of it, except for large corporate ones. Especially for small and medium sized enterprises, which do not have enough budget for and knowledge on sustainable production and ecodesign approaches, focusing only on the most important possible Environmental Aspect is unavoidable. In this direction, finding the right Environmental Aspect to work on is crucial for the companies. In this study, a multi-criteria decision-making methodology, Analytic Network Process is proposed to select the most relevant Environmental Aspect. The proposed methodology aims at providing a simplified Environmental assessment to producers. It is applied for a hand blender, which is a member of the Electrical and Electronic Equipment family. The decision criteria for the Environmental Aspects and relations of dependence are defined. The evaluation is made by the Analytic Network Process in order to create a realistic approach to inter-dependencies among the criteria. The results are computed via the Super Decisions software. Finally, it is observed that the procedure is completed in less time, with less data, with less cost and in a less subjective way than conventional approaches.

    Abstract:

    Green supply chain management has appeared as an essential strategy for enhancing Environmental performance of processes, structures, and products accordingly to address regulatory and competitive forces. Korean firms lag in green logistics activities relative to ‘green’ leading companies in advanced countries. Thus, few papers have identified and investigated green supply chain systems within South Korea. To further understand how some Korean firms may wish to further develop green logistics and supply chain practices, this paper explores a decision making framework of Green Logistics by using ANP (analytic network process). We derived 5 clusters and 21 components forming the strategic green logistics, and then conducted surveys for pairwise comparison of experts on Green Logistics in Korean firms, and computed relative weights of the clusters. Our findings indicate that Green Logistics would be very helpful for managers to adjust their strategic decisions for green supply chain management. The technique proposed in this paper may be generalized to other countries with the framework developed not unique to just Korean industry.

    Abstract This study proposes a model linking firm motivations for seeking ISO 14001 certification to the effectiveness of three major components of an Environmental management system (EMS) – Environmental policy, the assessment of Environmental Aspect and impacts, and management review. The relationship of these EMS components with a self-reported measure of Environmental performance is also examined. From a sample of 29 ISO 14001 certified facilities in Hong Kong (of 71 total certifications at the time the data was collected), it was found that motivations to enhance firm reputation are positively related to perceptions of the effectiveness of the policy statement. Motivations for reputation enhancement and cost reduction were positively related to perceptions of EMS effectiveness in assessing Environmental Aspects and impacts. The effectiveness of the methodology for identifying Environmental Aspects and impacts was also found to be positively related to improved Environmental performance.
