    Abstract:

    A structural-Environmental Model of alcohol and substance-related sexual HIV risk in 344 Latino migrant day laborers, participants in a cross-sectional survey, is tested using structural equation Modeling. Hypothesized pathways include: (1) direct paths between Environmental conditions and both distress related risk factors, and cultural and community protective factors; (2) indirect paths between Environmental conditions and distress through cultural and community protective factors; and (3) indirect paths between Environmental conditions and sexual risk through both distress risk factors and cultural and community protective factors. As hypothesized, the Environmental factors, discrimination and working conditions, were indirectly related to sexual risk through the distress related factor, problem drinking, and through the protective factor, contact with family in country of origin. More specifically, as discrimination and working conditions worsen, contact with family decreases, problem drinking increases, and sexual risk increases. Implications for multi-level interventions are discussed.

    Complex Environmental Models are controlled by a high number of parameters. Accurately estimating the values of all these parameters is almost impossible. Sensitivity analysis (SA) results enable the selection of the parameters to include in a calibration procedure, but can also assist in the identification of the Model processes. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis can yield crucial information on the use and meaning of the Model parameters. This paper presents a Sobol' sensitivity analysis for flow simulations by a SWAT Model of the river Kleine Nete, with the objective to assess the first order, second order and total sensitivity effects. Confidence intervals for the resulting sensitivity indices are inferred by applying bootstrapping. The results indicate that the curve number value (CN2) is the most important parameter of the Model and that no more than 9 parameters (out of 26) are needed to have an adequate representation of the Model variability. The convergence of the parameter ranking for total sensitivity effects is relatively fast, which is promising for factor fixing purposes. It is also shown that the Sobol' sensitivity analysis enhances the understanding of the Model, by e.g. pointing out 3 significant pairwise interactions. In general, it can be concluded that the Sobol' sensitivity analysis can be successfully applied for factor fixing and factor prioritization with respect to the input parameters of a SWAT Model, even with a limited number of Model evaluations. The analysis also supports the identification of Model processes, parameter values and parameter interaction effects.

    AbstractThe ability to run general circulation Models (GCMs) at ever-higher horizontal resolutions has meant that tropical cyclone simulations are increasingly credible. A hierarchy of atmosphere-only GCMs, based on the Hadley Centre Global Environmental Model version 1 (HadGEM1) with horizontal resolution increasing from approximately 270 to 60 km at 50°N, is used to systematically investigate the impact of spatial resolution on the simulation of global tropical cyclone activity, independent of Model formulation. Tropical cyclones are extracted from ensemble simulations and reanalyses of comparable resolutions using a feature-tracking algorithm. Resolution is critical for simulating storm intensity and convergence to observed storm intensities is not achieved with the Model hierarchy. Resolution is less critical for simulating the annual number of tropical cyclones and their geographical distribution, which are well captured at resolutions of 135 km or higher, particularly for Northern Hemisphere basins....

    Abstract This article describes the development and evaluation of the U.K.’s new High-Resolution Global Environmental Model (HiGEM), which is based on the latest climate configuration of the Met Office Unified Model, known as the Hadley Centre Global Environmental Model, version 1 (HadGEM1). In HiGEM, the horizontal resolution has been increased to 0.83° latitude × 1.25° longitude for the atmosphere, and 1/3° × 1/3° globally for the ocean. Multidecadal integrations of HiGEM, and the lower-resolution HadGEM, are used to explore the impact of resolution on the fidelity of climate simulations. Generally, SST errors are reduced in HiGEM. Cold SST errors associated with the path of the North Atlantic drift improve, and warm SST errors are reduced in upwelling stratocumulus regions where the simulation of low-level cloud is better at higher resolution.
