    Abstract:

    Seas and oceans are confronted with a plethora of Environmental problems, caused by land-based activities (agriculture, industries, and ports) and by maritime activities (such as shipping, fishing, oil and gas drilling, tourism, and navigational dredging). Environmental problems at sea challenge the efficacy of State sovereignty. Who is responsible, accountable, and regulates Environmental and spatial problems at the level of regional seas, and what is the role of States in these processes of governance? In the regional seas and on the high seas, the Environmental State is challenged by two developments: States become players at different levels, and States are confronted with the activities of big market players where they have no or little jurisdiction. The different forms of the Environmental State in Europe’s regional seas and in the Arctic Ocean are examined.

    Abstract:

    Fifteen major Balkan rivers with over 80% of the inflows in Eastern Mediterranean were examined for their Environmental State within the DPSIR framework. Physicogeographic and hydrochemical conditions differ substantially among river basins, which may be roughly classified into three main zones. Despite strong fragmentation, most of the rivers are liable to flash floods and have low summer flow. Decreasing precipitation and (mis)management caused a dramatic discharge reduction over the last decades. Wars, political instability, economical crises over the past decades, combined with administrative and structural constraints, poor Environmental planning and inspection and, frequently, a lack of Environmental awareness imposed significant pressures on rivers. Large wetland areas were drained in favour of widespread intensive agriculture. The treatment of municipal wastewaters is barely adequate in Greece and insufficient elsewhere, while management and treatment of mining and industrial wastewaters is overall poor. In general, lowland river sections are hydro-morphologically modified and are at the greatest pollution risk, while upstream areas mostly retain their natural conditions. Nutrient concentrations in a number of central and eastern Balkan rivers often exceed quality standards, whereas pesticides and heavy metals, partly of geochemical origin, occasionally exceed quality standards. Reservoirs retain vast masses of sediments, thus adversely affecting delta evolution, while dam operation disturbs the seasonal hydrological and hydrochemical regimes. Almost all Balkan countries face daunting water resource challenges because of urgently needed investments in water supply, sanitation, irrigation, and hydroelectricity. International treaties and designations and European Union Directives have mobilized pollution mitigation and conservation efforts. However, the application of Environmental legislation has proved in a number of cases inadequate. Constraints arise from long-standing top-down planning traditions, inadequate planning of national Environmental policies, poor administrative capacities, and heavy investment requirements, often combined with a lack of Environmental awareness.

    Abstract:

    The dominant factor regulating Greek riverine dissolved inorganic solid concentrations is chemical weathering, which depends on catchment climate and petrography. The majority of Greek rivers are moderately polluted and only a few of them show significant human impact and an increase in pollutant concentrations over time. Due to droughts in recent years and anthropogenic influence, the mean annual riverine dissolved solid concentrations exhibit a general interannual increase and significant long-term variations in their intra-annual hydrochemical fluctuations. The shallow Greek lakes are eutrophic, while the deep ones are oligo-mesotrophic. The majority of the lakes are monomictic and show summer thermal stratification, while the shallow ones are characterized by anoxic hypolimnetic conditions. Catchment petrography is not a dominant factor in the composition of lake waters since biochemical processes prevail. The majority of Greek lakes are also moderately polluted and are characterized by phosphorous-limited photosynthesis.

Each part describes the geography and the Environmental State of the region and gives an overview of the socio-economic conditions. The Environmental State of the study regions is described in terms of annual monitoring data for the main physico-chemical and biological parameters. The data cover the last decade. The socio-economic overview includes parameters such as e.g. population density, industrialization, agricultureand land use.

  • The distribution and Environmental State of vegetated islands within human‐impacted European rivers

    Abstract:

    Summary 1. Vegetated islands within river corridors are pivotal landscape features and are among the first to disappear as a consequence of flow regulation and channelisation. However, how vegetated islands vary along human-impacted rivers is poorly understood. 2. We carried out a detailed analysis of the contemporary distribution, diversity and Environmental State of vegetated islands within 12 human-impacted European rivers, using 75 Landsat 7 ETM+ satellite images (1999–2002), historical maps, DEM data and landscape metrics. We tested whether channel fragmentation, catchment land use and the Environmental State of fringing floodplains determine the spatial patterns of the islands. We also analysed the historical change of islands within selected sections of the Upper Danube, Upper Rhine and Olt rivers. 3. We identified 2771 islands in the contemporary landscape, varying from 0.06 to 9828 ha. Islands covered up to 21% of the active channel area and contributed up to 32% of the total riparian ecotone length. Island density ranged from 0.06 islands per river-km (River Sava) to 1.6 islands per river-km (River Tagliamento). River regulation has led to a marked loss of island density: 94% in the Upper Danube, 93% in the Upper Rhine, and 69% in the Olt. The Environmental State of the islands was significantly less altered by human activity than of their fringing floodplains; 93.4% of the vegetated islands exhibited a near-natural State, while 86% of the fringing floodplains were expansively converted to agricultural and urban land uses. 4. Our results highlight the ubiquitous presence of vegetated islands, their sensitivity to river regulation and their pivotal role for the future restoration and management of river corridors.
