  • drivers of proactive Environmental Strategy in family firms
    Business Ethics Quarterly, 2011
    Co-Authors: Pramodita Sharma, Sanjay Sharma
    Abstract:

Globally, family firms are the dominant organizational form. Family involvement in business and unique family dynamics impacts organizational Strategy and performance. However, family control of business has rarely been adopted as a discriminating variable in the organizations and the natural environment (ONE) research field. Drawing on the theory of planned behavior we develop a conceptual framework of the drivers of proactive Environmental Strategy (PES) in family firms. We argue that family involvement in business influences the attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control of a firm’s dominant coalition. Together these factors determine the extent of the dominant coalition’s intentions to undertake PES. Further, family firms with lower levels of relationship conflict within the controlling family will be more successful in translating the dominant coalition’s intentions to allocate resources for the pursuit of PES. Research implications of the theory are discussed.

  • The Influence of Stakeholders on the Environmental Strategy of Service Firms: The Moderating Effects of Complexity, Uncertainty and Munificence*
    British Journal of Management, 2008
    Co-Authors: Antonio Rueda-manzanares, J. Alberto Aragón-correa, Sanjay Sharma
    Abstract:

Drawing on the resource-based view of the firm, we examine how complexity, uncertainty and munificence in the general business environment moderate the association between a firm’s stakeholder integration capability and its Environmental Strategy. Our data were drawn from 134 ski resorts in 12 countries in western Europe and North America. Our study finds that (1) an organizational capability of stakeholder integration is associated with a service firm’s adoption of a proactive Environmental Strategy; (2) an uncertain business environment has a direct positive influence and a complex business environment has a direct negative influence on a firm’s Environmental Strategy; and (3) complexity has a negative moderating influence on the relationship between a firm’s stakeholder integration capability and its Environmental Strategy.

  • Environmental Strategy and performance in small firms a resource based perspective
    Journal of Environmental Management, 2008
Co-Authors: Alberto J Aragoncorrea, Sanjay Sharma, Nuria Hurtadotorres, Victor J Garciamorales
    Abstract:

In spite of the widespread recognition of the important roles that small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) play in most economies, limited research has focused on their impacts on the natural environment and the strategies such enterprises adopt to reduce these impacts. It is usually assumed that SMEs lack the resources to implement proactive Environmental strategies that go beyond minimum regulatory compliance. In this study of 108 SMEs in the automotive repair sector in Southern Spain, we found that SMEs undertake a range of Environmental strategies from reactive regulatory compliance to proactive pollution prevention and Environmental leadership. These strategies are associated with three organizational capabilities: shared vision, stakeholder management, and strategic proactivity, hypothesized based on the unique strategic characteristics of SMEs--shorter lines of communication and closer interaction within the SMEs, the presence of a founder's vision, flexibility in managing external relationships, and an entrepreneurial orientation. We also found that firms with the most proactive practices exhibited a significantly positive financial performance.

  • Corporate Environmental Strategy and Competitive Advantage - Corporate Environmental Strategy and Competitive Advantage
    2005
    Co-Authors: Sanjay Sharma, J. Alberto Aragón-correa
    Abstract:

A major dilemma for businesses has been the struggle to understand how to adopt and implement proactive Environmental practices while meeting the core business objectives of growth and competitive advantage. The international contributors - leading scholars in the field of Environmental Strategy and management - shed light on this difficult balance as they examine the generation and deployment of capabilities, processes, and routines that help a business develop advanced Environmental practices while simultaneously lowering costs and creating differentiation benefits. The first book to gather cutting-edge research on this complex relationship, Corporate Environmental Strategy and Competitive Advantage presents conceptual ideas and empirical findings, as well as a valuable review of extant literature and future directions for researchers. At an organizational level of analysis, the topics covered include the external and internal antecedents of Environmental capability-building including public policy, stakeholder engagement, managerial and organizational values, and human resource practices, and the outcomes of such capabilities in terms of Environmental innovation. At a macro level, the topics covered include an examination of capabilities that will help organizations detect and prepare for extreme Environmental events, and the development of clusters/networks of innovation to tackle sustainability problems that transcend organizational boundaries. Scholars, consultants and managers from business, the public sector, NGOs, international development institutions, and government working at the interface of business and the natural environment will find this book a necessary addition to their library.

  • Proactive Environmental Strategy in a supply chain context: The mediating role of investments
International Journal of Production Research, 2012
Co-Authors: Melek Akın Ateş, Jacqueline Bloemhof, E Van Raaij, F Wynstra
    Abstract:

There is a growing body of knowledge on the link between Environmental management and supply chain management, but there is contradicting evidence on the impact of a proactive Environmental Strategy on Environmental performance. Therefore, this paper investigates the impact of proactive Environmental Strategy on Environmental performance as mediated by Environmental investments. We also consider the antecedents of the adoption of proactive Environmental Strategy. We develop and test hypotheses, using data collected from 96 Turkish manufacturers through an online questionnaire. The model was tested using partial least squares (PLS), a structural equation modelling method. The results show that a proactive Environmental Strategy leads to higher Environmental investments; both internally and externally in collaboration with suppliers. Our findings support our hypothesis that Environmental investments act as a mediating variable between proactive Environmental Strategy and Environmental performance. The resul...

  • information technology the organizational capability of proactive corporate Environmental Strategy and firm performance a resource based analysis
European Journal of Information Systems, 2012
    Co-Authors: Jose Benitezamado, R M Walczuch
    Abstract:

The study of the relationships between information technology (IT), Environmental organizational issues and firm performance is a cutting-edge research topic for the information systems (IS) community. However, at present we know very little about these relationships. Drawing on the perspective of IT-enabled organizational capabilities and the literature on organizations and the natural environment, our study introduces conceptually the construct organizational capability of proactive corporate Environmental Strategy to the IS field. We propose that IT capability may enable the implementation of a proactive Environmental Strategy and that this Strategy could play a significant role in determining the business value of IT. Using structural equations modeling with data collected from 63 firms, we find that IT capability is an enabler of proactive Environmental Strategy and that this Strategy plays a significant role in mediating the effects of IT on firm performance. Our study provides initial evidence on the role of IT in the implementation of proactive Environmental practices. Our results suggest to IT executives that their decisions matter in shaping Environmental sustainability, which in turn will generate business value from IT.
