Panbiogeographic analysis of the species of Epicauta Dejean, 1834 (Coleoptera: Meloidae) from southern South America
2020Co-Authors: Campos Soldini, Maria Paula, Río, María Guadalupe Del, Roig-juñent SergioAbstract:Basado sobre los trazos individuales de 37 especies de Epicauta Dejean, 1834 de América del Sur Austral se obtuvieron seis trazos generalizados ubicados en dos áreas bióticas diferentes: cuatro están presentes en la Región Neotropical, uno en la Región Andina, y otro en la Zona de Transición Sudamericana, zona de ecotono entre ambas regiones. Como resultado de la superposición de trazos generalizados se han podido determinar cinco nodos, un nodo ubicado en la subregión Paranaense, tres nodos ubicados en la Subregión Chaqueña, y uno ubicado en la Zona de Transición Sudamericana. La gran cantidad de nodos obtenidos muestra que el área en estudio tiene una compleja historia Biogeográfica. Esta complejidad puede deberse a los numerosos eventos sucedidos en el Cenozoico en América del Sur, los que habrían permitido distintos desplazamientos cíclicos de la biota Neotropical.Based on individual tracks of 37 species of Epicauta Dejean, 1834 from southern South America we found six generalized tracks located in two different biotic areas: four are present in the Neotropical region, one in the Andean Region and the other in the South America Transition Zone. Five nodes have been determined, one of them located in the Paranaense subregion, three in the Chacoan subregion and one in the South American Transition Zone. The large number of nodes obtained shows that the study area has a complex biogeographic history. This complexity may have been due to the many events that occurred in the Cenozoic in South America, which have eluded different cyclic shifts of the Neotropical biota during this period.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse

Two hundred and sixty-four named species were recorded in this checklist based primarily on literature and museum records. Seventy-two species were included in the subgenus Macrobasis and 192 species into the nominotypic subgenus. Nomenclatural modifications are provided for E. langei Borchmann and E. nigripes Borchmann, both junior synonyms of E. pilme (Molina); E. albicincta Borchmann, junior synonym of E. suturalis (Haag-Rutenberg); E. lugubris Denier, junior synonym of E. tristis (Mäklin); and E. wagneri Pict, junior synonym of E. vicina (Haag-Rutenberg). Phylogenetic analysis and redefinition of the maculata species group of Epicauta (Meloidae: Meloinae: Epicautini)
'Brill', 2015Co-Authors: Campos Soldini, Maria Paula, Roig, Sergio AlbertoAbstract:A cladistic analysis based on 81 morphological characters was performed in order to determine the phylogenetic relationships of 11 species of Epicauta from South America. We find that the 11 South American species constitute a monophyletic group together with all the North American species of the Epicauta maculata group. Within this clade, the 11 species from South America conforms an apical monophyletic group within the E. maculata group. We propose to maintain the validity of the Epicauta maculata group, but also to redefine it with new characters. The South American species of the Epicauta maculata group are also described and illustrated. We propose the following nomenclatural changes: Epicauta rosilloi Martínez, junior synonym of Epicauta minutepunctata Borchmann; Epicauta fourcadei Denier, junior synonym of Epicauta fulvicornis (Burmeister), and Epicauta breyeri Denier, junior synonym of Epicauta nigropunctata Blanchard. Track Analysis of the North, Central and South American Species of the Epicauta maculata Group (Coleoptera: Meloidae)
'Springer Science and Business Media LLC', 2015Co-Authors: Campos Soldini, Maria Paula, García Fernandez, Mailen Soledad, Safenraiter, Melania EdithAbstract:We undertook a panbiogeographic analysis of 23 species of the Epicauta maculata group of America—Epicauta abeona Pinto, Epicauta adspersa (Klug), Epicauta andersoni Werner, Epicauta atomaria (Germar), Epicauta apache Pinto, Epicauta cavernosa (Courbon), Epicauta dilatipennis Pic, Epicauta fulvicornis (Burmeister), Epicauta horni Champion, Epicauta jeffersi Pinto, Epicauta koheleri Denier, Epicauta lizeri Denier, E. maculata (Say), Epicauta magnomaculata Martin, Epicauta minutepunctata Borchmann, Epicauta nigropunctata (Blanchard), Epicauta normalis Werner, Epicauta ocellata (Dugès), Epicauta pardalis LeConte, picauta phoenix Werner, Epicauta pluvialis Borchmann, Epicauta proscripta Werner, Epicauta rubella Denier, and Epicauta ventralis Werner—with the purpose of analyzing the distributional data for taxa, to establish patterns of distribution of an ancestral biota and areas where these groups have interacted. Based on the overlap of 20 individual tracks, four generalized tracks constituted by different numbers of species were identified; two of them are located in the Nearctic region and the Mexican transition zone (tracks “A” and “B”), and the other two are distributed in the Neotropical region and the South America transition zone (“C”, “D”). Six nodes were recognized: Two of them are included in the Nearctic Region, node ‘I’ located in northern USA and node ‘II’ located in southwestern USA, both at the intersection of the tracks “A” and “B”. The characters shown by these specimens do not permit to assign them to any of the known species of the genus, and thus we consider that they represent a new species: Epicauta falcolarandina sp. nov. The new species is included in the Epicauta vittata species group. E. falcolarandina differs at first glance from all other Venezuelan species of the E. vittata species group (Epicauta aragua and Epicauta apure) because it presents the ventral blade of the tarsal claws curved and of similar width and length than the dorsal one. The characteristic coloration pattern of E. falcolarandina, which vaguely resembles the pattern displayed by Epicauta leopardina, differs from all other species of the E. vittata species group. A particular trait of E. falcolarandina, shared with Epicauta abadona, is that the coloration of the pilosity does not match the color of the tegument. Most of the surface of the elytra of E. falcolarandina, including almost all dark zones, is covered by a whitish-yellow pilosity.

Graellsia, 2013Co-Authors: Mario Garciaparis, Jose L RuizAbstract:We describe a morphologically remarkable new species of the Epicauta cupraeola species group from the highlands of the State of Nayarit, Mexico. The external appearance of Epicauta cora sp. nov., is similar to that of Epicauta rufipennis and Epicauta diana , but it is distinct from both species based on male antennae structure, shape and pilosity of the head and pronotum, color of pronotal pilosity, and male fore-tarsal structure. The nine species integrating now the E. cupraeola species group have been revised. This study of 323 specimens, including diverse type material, confirms the synonymy of Cantharis rufescens with Epicauta basimacula first proposed by Pinto (1991), and reports new geographic records for Mexican taxa. The species of the E. cupraeola group are included in a key and illustrated photographically, including type specimens of five taxa. A phylogenetic re-analysis of the E. cupraeola species group results in the placement of the new species as sister to E. rufipennis , which together form a sister clade to the remaining species of the E. cupraeola group.

The species of the E. cupraeola group are included in a key and illustrated photographically, including type specimens of five taxa. A phylogenetic re-analysis of the E. cupraeola species group results in the placement of the new species as sister to E. rufipennis , which together form a sister clade to the remaining species of the E. cupraeola group.

The characters shown by these specimens do not permit to assign them to any of the known species of the genus, and thus we consider that they represent a new species: Epicauta falcolarandina sp. nov. The new species is included in the Epicauta vittata species group. E. falcolarandina differs at first glance from all other Venezuelan species of the E. vittata species group (Epicauta aragua and Epicauta apure) because it presents the ventral blade of the tarsal claws curved and of similar width and length than the dorsal one. The characteristic coloration pattern of E. falcolarandina, which vaguely resembles the pattern displayed by Epicauta leopardina, differs from all other species of the E. vittata species group. A particular trait of E. falcolarandina, shared with Epicauta abadona, is that the coloration of the pilosity does not match the color of the tegument. Most of the surface of the elytra of E. falcolarandina, including almost all dark zones, is covered by a whitish-yellow pilosity.
