The questionnaire responses gathered from 377 high school students in Taiwan were utilized to elicit such relationships. The analysis of the structural equation model revealed that students’ absolutist scientific Epistemic Beliefs led to lower-level conceptions of learning science (i.e. learning science as memorizing, preparing for tests, calculating, and practicing) while sophisticated scientific Epistemic Beliefs might trigger higher-level conceptions of learning science (i.e. learning science as increase of knowledge, applying, and attaining understanding). The students’ lower-level conceptions of learning science were also found to negatively associate with their self-efficacy of learning science, while the higher-level conceptions of learning science fostered students’ self-efficacy. However, this study found that students who viewed scientific knowledge as uncertain (advanced Epistemic Belief) tended to possess lower self-efficacy toward learning science.

three factor structure for Epistemic Belief inventory a cross validation study
PLOS ONE, 2017Co-Authors: Francisco Lealsoto, Rodrigo FerrerurbinaAbstract:Research on Epistemic Beliefs has been hampered by lack of validated models and measurement instruments. The most widely used instrument is the Epistemological Questionnaire, which has been criticized for validity, and it has been proposed a new instrument based in the Epistemological Questionnaire: the Epistemic Belief Inventory. The Spanish-language version of Epistemic Belief Inventory was applied to 1,785 Chilean high school students. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses in independent subsamples were performed. A three factor structure emerged and was confirmed. Reliability was comparable to other studies, and the factor structure was invariant among randomized subsamples. The structure that was found does not replicate the one proposed originally, but results are interpreted in light of embedded systemic model of epistemological Beliefs.

calling out fake online reviews through robust Epistemic Belief
Information & Management, 2021Co-Authors: Snehasish Banerjee, Alton Y K ChuaAbstract:Abstract Research shows that computational algorithms can classify online reviews as authentic or fake based on linguistic nuances. This study examines whether Internet users can process reviews in an algorithmic manner to discern authenticity. It also considers the role of Epistemic Belief—the individual trait that inherently determines one’s ability to separate fact from falsehood. In an online survey, 380 participants were each exposed to three hotel reviews—some authentic, others fake. Perceived specificity was positively related to perceived review authenticity, whereas perceived exaggeration showed a negative association. Epistemic Belief with respect to justification for knowing significantly moderated both the relationships.

to share or not to share the role of Epistemic Belief in online health rumors
International Journal of Medical Informatics, 2017Co-Authors: Alton Y K Chua, Snehasish BanerjeeAbstract:Abstract Objectives This paper investigates the role of Epistemic Belief in affecting Internet users’ decision to share online health rumors. To delve deeper, it examines how the characteristics of rumors—true or false, textual or pictorial, dread or wish—shape the decision-making among epistemologically naive and robust users separately. Methods An experiment was conducted. Responses were obtained from 110 participants, who were exposed to eight rumors. This yielded 880 cases (110 participants × 8 rumors) for statistical analyses. Results Epistemologically naive participants were more likely to share online health rumors than epistemologically robust individuals. Epistemologically robust participants were more likely to share textual rumors than pictorial ones. However, there were no differences between true and false rumors or between dread and wish rumors for either epistemologically naive or robust participants. Conclusions This paper contributes to the understanding of users’ health information sharing behavior. It encourages users to cultivate robust Epistemic Belief in order to improve their online health information processing skills.
