    Abstract:

    In vitro Micropropagation of Critically Endangered (CR ) Endemic Erodium somanum In this study, in vitro micropropagation of Erodium somanum H. Pesmen which is an endemic and critically endangered plant species was investigated.  In the last years, the E. somanum population decreased due to the base stations, wind turbines and fire towers constructed on the living space of these species. It is included in the Red Book of Turkish Plants.  In vitro propagation is a strong method enabling the protection of endangered species of flora, their re-growth in their natural environment and thus decreasing their risk of extinction. In the study for obtaining shoots in micropropagation works, first, E. somanum shoot tip explants and leaf explants were cultured in Murashige & Skoog (MS) media containing respectively 6 and 8 different combinations of cytokinin (BAP, KIN) and auxin (IBA, IAA, NAA) plant growth regulators.  Then, the rooting studies of the shoots obtained were made in 4 different MS media supplemented with 0.5-1 mg/L NAA and IBA. At the end of the studies, the best shoot inductions were obtained on MS media supplemented with 1 mg/L BAP-0.1 mg/L IBA for leaf petiole explants and on MS media supplemented with 2 mg/L BAP-1 mg/L IAA on shoot tip explants. The optimal root development of the shoots obtained for a complete plant was observed in 0.5 mg/L and 1 mg/L IBA supplemented MS media. Studies on in vitro methods and micropropagation of endemic plants to protect plant diversity must be focused on. E. ciconium mericarps display with short and long bristles vertical on mericarp bodies, whereas both long and short bristles adpressed-setose were found other five species. E. hoefftianum, E. botrys, E. malacoides, E. cicutarium sub sp. cicutarium, E. moschatum have sloped papillose surface ornamentation on the mericarp body. E. ciconium has foveate surface ornamentation on the mericarp body. E. botrys mericarps have one pit and two deep furrows, E. malacoides and E. moschatum mericarps have one pit and one furrow, E. cicutarium sub.sp. cicutarium mericarps have one pit and one shallow furrow whereas E. hoefftianum and E. ciconium were found only one pit.

    Abstract:

    This paper examines the phylogeny of Erodium subsect. Petraea, a group of six morphologically and genetically very similar species from the mountains of the western Mediterranean. Combined trnL–F-ITS analysis was unable to determine the phylogenetic relationships of these species owing to sequence similarity. AFLP fragment analysis showed different populations to cluster in six closely related phylogroups that partially coincided with morphological species. In the Iberian Peninsula, high temperatures during interstadial periods probably impeded the survival of these species at low altitudes, and their populations may have been forced to migrate northward within Iberia or remain isolated on high mountains. AFLP variation suggests that this might have led to their differentiation into groups and speciation during interglacials, but it probably also provided the basis for recurrent recolonisations and the mixing of neighbouring populations at the last glacial maxima. The genetic diversity of the two Erodium lineages suggests two migration episodes took place from southern Iberia towards the north, with one lineage migrating via western Iberia and the other via eastern Iberia. The patterns of genetic diversity observed in populations of 56 European species (27 genera) leads to the hypothesis that disparate proportions of unique polymorphic fragments are the result of the evolutionary histories of their mountain populations irrespective of the currently recognised species.

    Abstract Most perennial species of Erodium have medium to high pollen/ovule (P/O) ratios and are dichogamous mixed-mating species endemic to the mountain ranges of the Mediterranean. In contrast, the annual species of this genus, which are often adapted to disturbed sites, are adichogamous selfers with low P/O ratios and wide distributions. According to the present reconstruction of the evolution of Erodium, recurrent perennial to annual shifts occurred from a time earlier than the establishment of the Mediterranean climate during the Pleistocene. The diversification of the terminal clades containing annuals and perennials is dated to 6.4–2 Mya, between the onset of the Messinian (Miocene) and the end of the Pliocene. By adapting to several types of breeding systems (mixed-mating and selfing), many species of Erodium were able to meet the challenges of climatic deterioration and the changes in pollinators that took place at the end of the Tertiary.     †Background and Aims The genus Erodium is a common feature of Mediterranean-type climates throughout the world, but the Mediterranean Basin has significantly higher diversity than other areas. The aim here is to reveal the biogeographical history of the genus and the causes behind the evolution of the uneven distribution. †Methods Seventy-eight new nrITS sequences were incorporated with existing plastid data to explore the phylogenetic relationships and biogeography of Erodium using several reconstruction methods. Divergence times for major clades were calculated and contrasted with other previously published information. Furthermore, topological and temporal diversification rate shift analyses were employed using these data. †Key Results Phylogenetic relationships among species are widely congruent with previous plastid reconstructions, which refute the classical taxonomical classification. Biogeographical reconstructions point to Asia as the ancestral area of Erodium, arising approx. 18 MYA. Four incidences of intercontinental dispersal from the Mediterranean Basin to similar climates are demonstrated. Increases in diversification were present in two independent Erodium lineages concurrently. Two bursts of diversification (3 MYA and 0.69 MYA) were detected only in the Mediterranean flora. †Conclusions Two lineages diverged early in the evolution of the genus Erodium: (1) subgenus Erodium plus subgenus Barbata subsection Absinthioidea and (2) the remainder of subgenus Barbata. Dispersal across major water bodies, although uncommon, has had a major influence on the distribution of this genus and is likely to have played as significant role as in other, more easily dispersed, genera. Establishment of Mediterranean climates has facilitated the spread of the genus and been crucial in its diversification. Two, independent, rapid radiations in response to the onset of drought and glacial climate change indicate putative adaptive radiations in the genus.

    Abstract Chloroplast (trnL−F and rbcL) sequences were used to reconstruct the phylogeny of Geraniaceae and Hypseocharitaceae. According to these data Hypseocharitaceae and Geraniaceae are monophyletic. Pelargonium and Monsonia are sisters to the largest clade of Geraniaceae, formed by Geranium, Erodium and California. According to molecular dating and dispersal-vicariance analysis, the split of the stem branches of Geraniaceae probably occurred during the Oligocene, in southern Africa or in southern Africa plus the Mediterranean area. However, their diversification occurred during the Miocene, coinciding with the beginning of major aridification events in their distribution areas. An ancestor of the largest clade of Geraniaceae (Geranium, Erodium, and California) colonised a number of habitats in the northern hemisphere and in South American mountain ranges. Son yillarda E. somanum ’un populasyonu yasam alanlarinda insa edilen baz istasyonlari, ruzgar tribunleri ve yangin kulesi nedeniyle azalmistir.  Turkiye Bitkileri Kirmizi Kitabi’nda bulunur. In vitro cogaltma nesli tehlike altindaki bitki turlerinin korunmasi, dogal cevrelerine onlarin yeniden yerlestirilmesini mumkun kilan ve dolayisiyla tukenme riskini azaltan guclu bir koruma teknigidir.  Mikrocogaltim calismalarindaki surgun eldesi calismalari icin ilk olarak, E. somanum surgun ucu eksplantlari 6 ve yaprak eksplantlari 8 farkli kombinasyonda sitokinin (BAP, KIN) ve oksin (IBA, IAA, NAA) bitki buyume duzenleyicileri iceren Murashige & Skoog (MS) besin ortamlarinda kulture alinmislardir. Ikinci olarak elde edilen surgunlerin koklendirme denemeleri 0.5-1 mg/L NAA ve IBA iceren 4 farkli MS besin ortaminda yapilmistir. Calismalar sonucunda en iyi surgun gelisimleri, yaprak eksplantlarinda 1 mg/L BAP - 0.1 mg/L IBA iceren MS ortaminda ve surgun ucu eksplantlarinda 2 mg/L BAP - 1 mg/L IAA iceren MS besin ortaminda oldugu belirlenmistir. Tam bir bitki eldesi icin elde edilen surgunlerin en iyi kok gelisimlerinin 0.5 mg/L IBA ve 1 mg/L IBA iceren MS besin ortamlarinda oldugu gozlenmistir. Bitki cesitliliginin korunmasi icin endemik bitkilerin in vitro metodlar ile mikrocogaltimi konusundaki calismalara onem verilmelidir.

    Abstract:

    In vitro Micropropagation of Critically Endangered (CR ) Endemic Erodium somanum In this study, in vitro micropropagation of Erodium somanum H. Pesmen which is an endemic and critically endangered plant species was investigated.  In the last years, the E. somanum population decreased due to the base stations, wind turbines and fire towers constructed on the living space of these species. It is included in the Red Book of Turkish Plants.  In vitro propagation is a strong method enabling the protection of endangered species of flora, their re-growth in their natural environment and thus decreasing their risk of extinction. In the study for obtaining shoots in micropropagation works, first, E. somanum shoot tip explants and leaf explants were cultured in Murashige & Skoog (MS) media containing respectively 6 and 8 different combinations of cytokinin (BAP, KIN) and auxin (IBA, IAA, NAA) plant growth regulators.  Then, the rooting studies of the shoots obtained were made in 4 different MS media supplemented with 0.5-1 mg/L NAA and IBA. At the end of the studies, the best shoot inductions were obtained on MS media supplemented with 1 mg/L BAP-0.1 mg/L IBA for leaf petiole explants and on MS media supplemented with 2 mg/L BAP-1 mg/L IAA on shoot tip explants. The optimal root development of the shoots obtained for a complete plant was observed in 0.5 mg/L and 1 mg/L IBA supplemented MS media. Studies on in vitro methods and micropropagation of endemic plants to protect plant diversity must be focused on.     The paper presents experimental results concerning the ultrasonically-assisted extraction of bioactive compounds from Erodium glaucophyllum roots. A comparison with conventional methodology is presented, and thereby the phytochemical composition and the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of extracts are evaluated. The phenolic profile of Erodium extracts was analyzed by TOF–LC–MS–MS. The identification of phenolic compounds revealed that the major component was (+)-gallocatechin in the aqueous extracts obtained for the different extraction methodologies. The highest quantity of phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity was found in the hydroethanolic extract obtained by conventional extraction (29.22–25.50 mg GAE/g DM; 21.174 mM Trolox equivalent). The highest content of carotenoids, varying from 0.035 to 0.114 mg/g dry matter, was reached by ultrasonic-assisted extraction. Furthermore, Erodium extracts showed a potent inhibition of the inflammatory reaction by means of the inhibition of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). The extracts obtained when ultrasound extraction was combined with ethanol:water (50:50, v/v) presented the greatest inhibition (92%).

    Abstract Erodium spp. is a genus that can be found in all continents that has been traditionally used in folk medicine to treat many diseases such as hemorrhage, dermatological disorders, indigestion, and inflammatory diseases. Moreover, Erodium leaves have been used for the preparation of salads, omelets, sandwiches, sauces and soups, among other food products. The objective of this review was to show the recent and relevant studies about extraction of bioactive compounds, the phytochemical characterization, the potential biological activities and toxicological evidence reported in both in vitro and in vivo studies from Erodium spp. In addition, the use of Erodium spp. as natural compounds against the development of diseases were also showed. This review highlights the traditional use of Erodium species in several countries as a therapeutic agent to treat several diseases (such as constipation, dermatological disorders, diabetes, indigestion, urinary inflammations, and as carminative agent), the factors influencing the extraction of bioactive compounds (mainly species and solvent composition on phenolic compounds) and phytochemical profile (presence of essential oils and alkaloids), the scientific evidence about its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial (against both spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms), antiviral and other health-related activities (anti-protozoal and anti-viral activity) as well as the toxicological evidence. Erodium spp. is a relevant source of compounds with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and biological activity, which support its potential exploration in pharmacological and food area. Major efforts are necessary to advance the knowledge about Erodium genus regarding the relation between traditional use and scientific evidence, optimization of extraction conditions, the influence on biological mechanisms at animal and clinical levels, and bioaccessibility and bioavailability of bioactive compounds.

    Abstract Erodium glaucophyllum is a common Mediterranean herb known for its health benefits. In this study, Erodium extracts obtained from different extraction methods (conventional vs ultrasound-assisted extraction) and extraction solvents (aqueous and hydroethanolic) were evaluated in microbiological media to determine their effects on bacteria (Salmonella enterica, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria innocua, Bifidobacterium lactis and Lactobacillus casei) and antiviral activity (hepatitis A virus and murine norovirus). Both, the extraction method and solvent were found to be important contributing factors. Ultrasound-assisted extraction yielded the highest level of desirable Erodium-extracted phenolic compounds. Hydroethanolic extracts exhibited the highest level of bioactivity on the tested bacteria and also showed the highest antiviral activity against hepatitis A virus and murine norovirus. Erodium glaucophyllum extracts may have potential use as a food or dietary supplement.
