    Abstract:

    In order to supplement the available information for the eco-hydraulic approach to designing fish passages, taking into account the taxonomic, dimensional structure, as well as taking into account the presence of predatory fish in the stream, the distribution of migratory fish of the boreal plain faunistic complex (Russian Federation) was studied. Three depth-velocity sections from the shore to the midstream were investigated: 5 m and 27.8 cm/s, 8 m and 44.4 cm/s, 11 m and 55.6 cm/s. Analysis of the migration distribution of fish showed that in the direction from the shore to the midstream, the proportion of representatives of Cyprinidae decreases from 41.8–24.3% and that of Percidae decreases from 25.0–18.4%. For individuals of two groups: the Acipenseridae and Lotidae, Coregonidae and Esocidae, patterns of distribution in the structure of migratory fish are opposite – their share increases with increasing speed and depth characteristics: 23.0–40.2% and 10.2–17.1%, respectively. An assessment of the dimensional structure revealed a feature of increase in the size range of fish from the shore to the midstream: the dominance of small individuals ( 30 cm) in the area of higher speeds and depths. A significant difference in the distribution for all studied taxonomic fish groups between the shore and the midstream was shown. Thus, it has been established that for Cyprinidae during the migration period, the choice shifts in favour of minimizing energy costs, and the choice to avoid the risk of predation from individuals of the groups: Coregonidae and Esocidae, and also Percidae, shifts in favour of the former. The distribution of perch is influenced by the reduction of energy costs and the simultaneous avoidance of predation and cannibalism. For the fish group Acipenseridae and Lotidae, their predominance in the deeper area is due to their less developed visual orientation mechanism in the stream because they are bottom-living fish species.

    Abstract:

    On the basis of recent hydroacoustic method with using “PanCor” computerized program-technological complex, research was conducted on the distribution of fish of different taxonomic groups in the water area of Irtysh, a large trans-border river on the bend (meander) with a vortex zone. A hydroacoustic complex allows one to conduct remote size-taxonomic identification of fish. It is demonstrated that on the examined area of the river, fish of different taxonomic groups and sizes concentrate in the zones of increased turbidity and intense whirlpools (vortices) which form as a result of opposite currents at the river meander. The largest concentrations of fish form in the deepest zone of the examined water area and in front of it – vortex zone. It was determined that in the zone of recorded vortices, the number of fish of different taxonomic groups (Cyprinidae, Percidae, Coregonidae, Esocidae, Acipenseridae, Lotidae) is on average 2.14–2.61 times reliably higher compared to the observations at the studied part of the river with no vortices at comparable parameters of depth.     Abstract:

    To study the fish population of the Lower Irtysh there were used control catches in the lower Irtysh in the Uvatsky, Tobolsky and Vagaysky regions of the Tyumen oblast. The results of forensic ichthyologic examinations on such species as nelma, starlet and Sibirian sturgeon, were used by the members of Aquatic ecology group of the Tobolsk Complex Scientific Station of the Ural Branch of the RAS. There were investigated representatives of six families (Cyprinidae, Acipenseridae, Esocidae, Percidae, Lotidae, and Coregonidae), in total, 13 species of fish were studied with a total of 969 individuals. The most numerous were peaceful fishes - 825 individuals (representatives of the Cyprinidae family 73.0% and the Acipenseridae family - 12.2% of the total number of fish in the control catch). The proportion of predatory fish species accounted for 144 individuals (representatives of Coregonidae family - 0.2%, Percidae - 8.2%, Esocidae - 5.0% and the only representative of the Lotidae family - burbot, was 1.4% of the total catch). Maximum weight was noted in Siberian sturgeon - 7 880 g, the minimum mass recorded in roach was 41 g. Maximum fishing length among the fish studied was also noted in Siberian sturgeon - 105 cm, the minimum length noted was of dace - 8.9 cm. Presence in catches of such species as pike perch, ruff and burbot, which are sensitive to water pollution, can be considered an indicator of satisfactory water condition in the Lower Irtysh.

    Fragmentation of rivers by physical obstacles has resulted in the drastic range reduction or extinction of numerous diadromous and potadromous species of fish worldwide. In order to implement to partially or completely re-establish the free movements of fish in the entire watercourse, the Walloon regional government (Southern Belgium) initiated an integrated restoration project whose objectives are 1) To perform a complete inventory of all obstacles that may potentially interfere with the longitudinal connectivity and the free movements of fish, 2) To test, using radio telemetry, the ability of representative fish species (Salmonidae, Thymallidae, Cyprinidae, Esocidae and Cottidae) to clear different typologies of physical obstacles, 3) To determine the problematic sites that should be improved with priority. 4) To construct fish passage facilities and to examine their biological efficiencies. During our talk we will synthesize the results of ten years of research and define the different options for the future.Peer reviewe
