    The behaviour patterns of yellow-stage European eels Anguilla anguilla within the tidal waters of the rivers Frome and Piddle, and the neighbouring Poole Harbour estuary (Dorset, England) were examined from July to December using acoustic transmitters and a fixed hydrophone array. Point-to-point measures of range varied between 630 m and 4150 m, with no relationship between eel size and range. Eight eels displayed repeated circuits, travelling distances of 440 m to 5060 m over a few hours. Activity was generally, but not exclusively, nocturnal, with the start and end times closely associated with sunset and sunrise, respectively. Neither direction of travel nor average ground speed was influenced by tidal flow direction, and seasonal declines in water temperature did not appear to influence behaviours. These results on distance travelled during regular, nocturnal movements provide valuable insights into the spatial and temporal distribution of yellow eels in an Estuarine Environment, which can aid the design of survey programmes in terms of the range over which to deploy fishing gears and the number of nights they should be fished. These survey programmes are urgently required to estimate eel production from saline Environments for national Eel Management Plans, and the subsequent implementation of effective conservation measures. The strong influence of light regime on the behaviour patterns of eels points towards control of artificial illumination (light pollution) being an important eel conservation measure in this Environment, at least.     Some freshwater fishes occur regularly in Estuarine areas that experience spatial and seasonal variation in marine influence. These dynamic abiotic and biotic conditions potentially influence food consumption and growth. We found that effects of an Estuarine Environment on the growth of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) in Alabama's Mobile–Tensaw River Delta depended on body size, distance from the marine source, and amount of freshwater inflow. Incremental growth analyses demonstrated that young largemouth bass (Estuarine Environment declining with distance upstream; this relationship was reversed for older fish with faster growth in fresher, upstream areas. The magnitude of freshwater inflow influenced the relationship between age-specific growth and proximity to Mobile Bay.     Abstract:

    Rivers carry the products of continental weathering, and continuously supply the oceans with a broad range of chemical constituents. This erosional signature is, however, uniquely moderated by biogeochemical processing within estuaries. Estuaries are commonly described as complex filters at land-sea margins, where significant transformations can occur due to strong physico-chemical gradients. These changes differ for different classes of elements, and can vary widely depending on the geographic location. U- and Th-series nuclides include a range of elements with vastly different characteristics and behaviors within such Environments, and the isotopic systematics provide methods for investigating the transport of these nuclides and other analog species across estuaries and into the coastal ocean. There are numerous types and definitions of estuaries (see Dyer 1973). In this paper, it is simply considered to be a region where freshwater and seawater mix, to emphasize the chemical focus of the issues involved here. This region can either be contained within a river channel or extend onto the shelf, with effects often extending well into an adjoining ocean basin (Fairbridge 1980). These are complex ecological, biogeochemical, and hydrodynamic systems, with strong gradients in the concentrations and composition of micro- and macro particulate matter as well as dissolved organic and inorganic species. Particle-reactive radionuclides and trace elements being transported across estuaries are subject to partitioning between the dissolved, colloidal and particulate phases. The variable chemical nature of the U- and Th-series radionuclides is evident in their distributions in an Estuarine Environment. Such radionuclides can effectively serve as tracers to identify the sources, fate and transport of particles and colloids as well as other pollutants that behave similarly to these nuclides.
