statistical entropy analysis as tool for circular economy proof of concept by optimizing a lithium ion battery waste sieving System
Journal of Cleaner Production, 2019Co-Authors: Omar Velazquez Martinez, K G Van Den Bogaart, Mari Lundstrom, Annukka Santasaloaarnio, M A Reuter, Rodrigo Serna GuerreroAbstract:Abstract With the concept of circular economy gaining strength as an alternative for the sustainable production of raw materials, there is an inherent need to develop methods capable of quantifying the efficiency of recycling Systems, provide guidelines for optimization of existing technologies, and support the design of new products based on sound, scientific and engineering principles. The work hereby presented proposes the use of statistical entropy coupled with material flow analysis as a basis for the optimization of separation and purification processes. Unlike other efficiency parameters, this approach provides an analysis of component concentration or dilution from a Systemic perspective, taking into consideration products, by-products and waste streams. As a proof-of-concept, a sieving process for waste lithium-ion batteries (LIB) was chosen. It is demonstrated that using this approach it is possible to determine the stages that do not contribute to the concentration of components thus offering guidelines for process optimization. In the present case, the total number of sieving stages can be decreased with a minimum impact on the concentration of the products. In comparison, it is also shown that the widely accepted exergy analysis is not able to identify the opportunities for optimization due to the particular characteristics of this Exemplary System, i.e., negligible change in energy consumption as a function of sieving stages and absence of chemical changes. Finally, the experimental results suggest that Al and Cu can be concentrated using a simple sieving pre-processing step, perhaps in preparation for a subsequent refining stage.

Bi-state control of parametric resonance
Applied Physics Letters, 2013Co-Authors: Congzhong Guo, Gary K. FedderAbstract:We report a bi-state controller capable of serving along the microelectromechanical parametric resonant bifurcation point at large displacement amplitudes. The feedback states are two levels of the electrostatic-drive polarization voltage that shift the nonlinear resonance characteristics. The System is driven at a fixed frequency. The feedback states correspond to two steady-state conditions: the “on” state experiencing parametric resonance and the “off” state at zero amplitude. The states are cycled by 200 kHz pulse-width-modulation that circumvents hysteretic latch-on that occurs in an equivalent continuous-time analog feedback. The Exemplary System demonstrated has 1.9 μm servo amplitude with 2 A minimum Allan deviation.

Health care System and medical education in Canada. 1. Review of the health care context in a time of change
World Journal of Surgery, 1994Co-Authors: Adrianne H. Cohen, R Cohen, Bryce R. Taylor, Richard K. ReznickAbstract:Over the past three decades Canada has developed an Exemplary System of universal health care. However, current financial constraints threaten to undermine the very foundation of the System that represents Canada's respect for social justice. The first of these two articles (Part 1) discusses the unique characteristics of the System, a comparative view of universal health care Systems, the reaction of the medical profession to governmental control, and finally the funding and manpower shortages that are compelling a review of the values and organization that have sustained the System thus far. The second article (Part 2) reviews the organization and funding of medical education and the impact of some critical changes in the health care System on postgraduate medical education. Issues related to new licensure and certification requirements, changing population demographics and approaches to health care delivery, manpower needs, and the attitude and expectations of the public are discussed.
