His Eurasian origin had exiled him both from his motherland India as well as from an England which he vainly tried to make his home. This article focuses on his last book, The Long Strider (2003), co-authored by Saraya Srivatsa, where Moraes revisits this idea of exile and homecoming through a double narrative relating the fascinating history of an Englishman named Tom Coryate who actually “walked” from England to India in 1613 to visit the court of Jahangir. This is interwoven with Dom Moraes’s own journey tracing the footsteps of the pioneering Englishman. Apart from exploring the manifold routes of and movements between home and exile, this travelogue/history/fiction also offers interesting insights into key postcolonial concerns such as the colonial gaze, the process of narrativizing the Orient, and the process of constructing history. Syrian activists who fled the brutal crackdown and the war share with all Exiles the experience of absence. We propose to examine absence experienced through the prism of political commitment in which geographical distances are exacerbated by distance from the cause in favor of the “Syrian revolution”. Presently settled in France, these activists experience many kinds of suffering related to exile. They try to alleviate it by maintaining links with the ongoing protests. The evolution of the conflict however, and protracted delays lead them to resignation, and to an acceptance of absence and a distancing from their commitment to the cause. This article thus examines the relations between exile and political commitment.

La demarche permet de degager - etant donne ce contexte specifique, puisque sur-politise - differentes strategies de transfert litteraire. Elle met egalement en rapport les degres croissants de mediation ainsi observes avec l'usage contraste de la position d'exile, des ressources sociales initiales; des conjonctures du pays d'origine et d'accueil et . avec l'intensite variable de l'engagement politique.

These countries developed different policies toward Exiles and refugees due to the unsimilarity of their political contexts. In the first case an efficient assistance system was developed. Nothing similar happened in the second case; furthermore, Spain did not join the Geneva Convention until August 1978, and the first law regulating the right of asylum was enacted as late as 1984. The above questions, as well as matters of cultural nearness/distance, were determinant in the integration process of Argentinians in those countries. El exilio argentino que se produce en la década de los años 70 del siglo pasado se halla inserto en el marco del proceso de violencia política imperante en el país desde 1974, y especialmente, a partir del terrorismo de Estado impuesto entre 1976 y 1983. La salida forzada de miles de argentinos fue el resultado directo de las prácticas represivas implementadas desde el aparato estatal y paraestatal. Por ello, es que la historia del exilio de ese período presenta características específicas que lo distinguen de cualquier otro proceso demográfico de emigración argentina previa o posterior. Otra cuestión que debemos resaltar es que este fenómeno, que involucró la marcha de millares de personas, se inscribió en un proceso represivo mucho más amplio que abarcaba diferentes repúblicas Iberoamericanas. Donde también se instauraron dictaduras militares basadas en la doctrina de la Seguridad Nacional – especialmente en Chile y Uruguay – que inclusive coordinaron sus políticas represivas, a través del conocido Plan Cóndor. Cold War History, 2013Co-Authors: Friederike KindkovacsAbstract:The article investigates the role of Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty as a crucial junction of cross-Iron Curtain communication throughout the Cold War. It explores how the radio stations turned into both real as well as imaginary targets of letters, underground literature, and private phone calls from the ‘Other Europe’. After outlining the radios' mission in the early 1950s, the article concentrates on the practical as well as the symbolic employability of Exiles. This will help further the understanding of the central role of Exiles in closing gaps between the radio stations' mission and their actual transmission. By reestablishing means of real cross-border communication, Exiles turned into the key players of this ‘Cold War of the ether’.
