The three main components of SS are: dry eyes, dry mouth, and other connective tissue disease. When only two of these, dry eyes and dry mouth, are present, the disease is designated primary SS. In the presence of the third component, most commonly SLE or RA, with one or both of the two first components the disease is designated secondary SS.In murine transplantation chimeras, we have demonstrated the development of both primary and secondary SS depending upon the mouse strains used. We transferred large numbers of viable leucocytes from homozy-gotic donors to heterozygotic recipients. When DBA/2 mice were used as donors, a full-developed SLE-syndrome, with autoantibodies against native DNA, nuclear antigens, and red blood cells was observed. We have previously demonstrated an SLE-like syndrome early in the reaction, with an additional Sjogren's syndrome-like glandular affection occurring later.In this study, we used Balb/c mice as donors and Balb/cxCBA/H-T6 F, hybrids as recipients. We found serum autoantibodies characteristic of SLE after 9 weeks but not after 20 weeks. No clinical signs of disease were seen at any time. After prolonged studies (5 months), we found heavy inflammation in Harderian. salivary, and tear Glands. All animals survived the entire length of the experiment without signs of renal failure. The pathological manifestations: lymphocytic infiltration of Exocrine Glands, and enlargement of lymph nodes, are similar to those seen in patients with Sjogren's syndrome. The same Glands also release these enzymes into the bloodstream. This latter process has commonly been assumed to occur solely as the result of a pathological condition or as an inadvertent by-product of Exocrine secretion due to the leakage of trace quantities of the enzymes into blood. However, a variety of evidence suggests that the endocrine secretion of digestive enzymes is a normal occurrence that can be of substantial magnitude in healthy individuals, is responsive to various physiological stimuli, and is distinct from Exocrine secretion. Recent research has focused attention on this process as a promising means for the delivery of engineered proteins into the systemic circulation for pharmaceutical purposes. In this review, we survey research in this area and consider the evidence for the existence of an endocrine secretion of digestive enzymes, the cause of enzyme release into the bloodstream, its source within the tissue, and, finally, the physiological purposes that this secretion process might serve.

Kwapich, Kevin L HaightAbstract:To become integrated into an ant society, myrmecophilous parasites must overcome both the defenses and the communication system of their hosts. Some aleocharine staphylinid beetles employ chemical and tactile strategies to invade colonies, where they later consume ant brood and participate in parasitic trophallaxis with host ants. By producing compounds that both appease their hosts and stimulate adoption, the beetles are able to live in and deposit their own eggs in the well defended ant nest. In the current paper, previous findings on the myrmecophilous behavior and morphological features of the staphylinid beetle Lomechusoides (formerly Lomechusa) strumosus are reviewed and re-evaluated. Hitherto unpublished results concerning the beetles' ability to participate in the social food flow of their host ants are reported. Furthermore, we present an analysis and documentation of the behavioral interactions between beetles and host ants during the adoption process, and we report new histological and scanning electron microscopic analyses of the Exocrine Glands and morphological adaptations that underlie the myrmecophilous behavior of L. strumosus. The main features of L. strumosus are compared with those of the staphilinid myrmecophile Lomechusa (formerly Atemeles) pubicollis. The paper concludes with a description of the life trajectory of L. strumosus and presents a brief history and discussion of the hypotheses concerning the evolution of myrmecophily in L. strumosus and other highly adapted myrmecophilous parasites.

Queen Specific Exocrine Glands in Legionary Ants and Their Possible Function in Sexual Selection
PloS one, 2016Co-Authors: Bert HölldoblerAbstract:The colonies of army ants and some other legionary ant species have single, permanently wingless queens with massive post petioles and large gasters. Such highly modified queens are called dichthadiigynes. This paper presents the unusually rich Exocrine gland endowment of dichthadiigynes, which is not found in queens of other ant species. It has been suggested these kinds of Glands produce secretions that attract and maintain worker retinues around queens, especially during migration. However, large worker retinues also occur in non-legionary species whose queens do not have such an exuberance of Exocrine Glands. We argue and present evidence in support of our previously proposed hypothesis that the enormous outfit of Exocrine Glands found in dichthadiigynes is due to sexual selection mediated by workers as the main selecting agents.
