    Abstract:

    This study was conducted to investigate the influence of genotype on growth performance, carcass characteristics and Meat chemical composition traits of chickens under hot climatic conditions. Two Exotic Meat strains (Hybro and Hubbard) and three Sudanese native chicken ecotypes (Bare- neck, Large Baladi and Betwil) were used for this purpose. Data were analyzed using General linear model (GLM) of SAS (2007). Results revealed that genotype had significant (P<0.01) effect on traits studied, with the Exotic strains exhibited higher average values for live body weight, eviscerated carcass, dressing percentage and carcass cuts percentages. On the other hand the native chicken ecotypes showed higher relative values for back, wings, visceral organs and feather. Chemical composition results were variable, with the highest levels of Protein and ether extract recorded for the Exotic Meat strain, Hybro and the lowest were recorded for the native chicken, Bare-neck. Moreover, significant differences (P< 0.01) among genotypes were observed for shank weight and shank length, with Hubbard being the highest and Large Beladi and Betwil being the lowest for shank weight and shank length respectively. Among the native chicken ecotypes, Bare-neck had the lowest relative feather weight indicating the effect of Na gene in reducing feather coverage around the body

    Abstract:

    Deforestation due to rapid expansion of oil palm cultivation area and other environmental issues related to oil palm productions had caused concern among the public and the NGOs. This led to the establishment of sustainable palm oil certification. Certified sustainable palm oil is palm oil that has been grown on a plantation that has been managed sustainably and certified by the certification body. The objectives of the study are to assess smallholders’ attitude and knowledge on farmland biodiversity and to assess smallholders’ attitude and willingness to participate in palm oil certification scheme. Qualitative and quantitative data were collecting using structured interview with 50 respondents, which were organized smallholders in FELDA Lurah Bilut, Pahang, using convenience sampling. From this study, it show that most of the respondents were lack of knowledge on oil palm biodiversity based on the question asked about wildlife sighting in oil palm farm. Wildlife identified were mostly pests animals and can be hunted for Exotic Meat. But, most of them concerned on caring these wildlife because of their role in oil palm farmlands. The study also found that smallholders were willing to participate in sustainable palm oil certification and willing to pay on average RM 10 per acre per year. Most respondents agree to the certification requirements pertaining to biodiversity and environmental protection

    Abstract:

    Escherichia coli (E. coli) 0157:H7 and Salmonella typhimurium (s. typhimurium) are foodborne pathogens that cause food poisoning outbreaks since decades ago. Studies have shown that Exotic Meats have the potential to be contaminated by both pathogens. A total of 14 Exotic Meat samples namely wild boar (n=3), snake (n=3), soft-shelled turtle (n=3), frog (n=3), deer (n=l) and squirrel (n=l) were purchased and collected from wet markets, food court, restaurant and individuals for the present study. The isolation of E. coli and Salmonella spp. from the collected samples were accomplished through selective plating on EMBA and XLD agar respectively while polymerase chain reaction were used to detect the presence of E. coli 0157:H7 and S. typhimurium in the collected samples. The findings showed that 100% (14114) of the samples showed appearance of E. coli colonies on EMBA while 78.57% (11/14) of the samples showed appearance of Salmonella colonies on XLD agar. Both E. coli 0157:H7 and S. typhimurium were not detected from the collected samples through polymerase chain reaction. However, the results cannot prove that Exotic Meats are safe to be consumed. Hence, more related studies are required to further assess the microbial risk on consuming Exotic Meats and ensure food safety
