    Abstract:

    The Famennian (Upper Devonian, c . 372 to 359 Ma) strata of Belgium have recently received much attention after the discoveries of early tetrapod remains and outstandingly preserved continental arthropods. The Strud locality has yielded a diverse flora and fauna including seed-plants, tetrapods, various placoderm, actinopterygian, acanthodian and sarcopterygian fishes, crustaceans (anostracans, notostracans, conchostracans and decapods) and a putative complete insect. This fossil assemblage is one of the oldest continental – probably fresh-water – ecosystems with a considerable vertebrate and invertebrate diversity. The study of the palaeoenvironment of the Strud locality is crucial because it records one of the earliest and most important phases of tetrapod evolution that took place after their emergence but before their terrestrialization. It raises the question of environmental and ecological conditions for the Devonian aquatic ecosystem and the selection pressures occurring at the onset of tetrapod terrestrialization. The present study characterized the fluvial facies of the Upper Famennian sedimentary rocks of Strud and the surrounding areas. The exceptional preservation of arthropods and plants in the main fossiliferous layers is explained by rapid burial in the fine-grained sediment of the quiet and confined flood plain environment. Newly investigated fossiliferous sections in the Meuse–Samson area led to the description and correlation of key sections (Strud, Wierde and Jausse sections, complemented by the less continuous Haltinne, Huy and Coutisse sections). Moreover, the investigated sections allowed a review of the age of the fossiliferous horizon, which is now definitely considered to be Late Famennian in age.

Introduction and geological contextIn Belgium, Famennian rocks crop out extensively across the Dinant Synclinorium (allochtonous), Haine-Sambre-Meuse Overturned Thrust Sheets (former southern limb of the Namur Synclinorium; see Belanger et al., 2012, for discussion about this Variscan structural element), Vesdre area (lateral equivalent to the latter), Theux Tectonic Window (autochtonous) and Brabant Parautochton (former northern limb of the Namur Synclinorium, parautochtonous). The Famennian shows a regressive trend from open marine shales of the Famenne Group (lower Famennian) to fluvio-lagunal siltstones, sandstones and dolomites of the Upper Famennian Evieux Formation (Thorez & Dreesen, 1986). The litho- and biostratigraphy of the stage are well known, thanks to the seminal works of Thorez and colleagues (Thorez et al., 1977; Thorez & Dreesen, 1986, 2002; Thorez et al., 2006), which were mainly dedicated to the Condroz area (eastern Dinant Synclinorium). The Famennian lithostratigraphy of the Haine-Sambre-Meuse Overturned Thrust Sheet (sensu Belanger et al., 2012), Vesdre area and Theux Tectonic Window, even if similar, remains relatively poorly known.     The known diversity of tetrapods of the Devonian period has increased markedly in recent decades, but their fossil record consists mostly of tantalizing fragments^ 1 – 15 . The framework for interpreting the morphology and palaeobiology of Devonian tetrapods is dominated by the near complete fossils of Ichthyostega and Acanthostega ; the less complete, but partly reconstructable, Ventastega and Tulerpeton have supporting roles^ 2 , 4 , 16 – 34 . All four of these genera date to the late Famennian age (about 365–359 million years ago)—they are 10 million years younger than the earliest known tetrapod fragments^ 5 , 10 , and nearly 30 million years younger than the oldest known tetrapod footprints^ 35 . Here we describe Parmastega aelidae gen. et sp. nov., a tetrapod from Russia dated to the earliest Famennian age (about 372 million years ago), represented by three-dimensional material that enables the reconstruction of the skull and shoulder girdle. The raised orbits, lateral line canals and weakly ossified postcranial skeleton of P. aelidae suggest a largely aquatic, surface-cruising animal. In Bayesian and parsimony-based phylogenetic analyses, the majority of trees place Parmastega as a sister group to all other tetrapods. Three-dimensionally preserved fossils of Parmastega aelidae , a newly described tetrapod from the earliest Famennian (Late Devonian) of Russia, provide detailed insights into the morphology and palaeobiology of the earliest tetrapods.

    Abstract A new species of rhynchodipterid lungfish, Soederberghia simpsoni, sp. nov., is described on the basis of a complete skull roof, and an incomplete but articulated head plus body, from the Upper Devonian Mandagery Sandstone near Canowindra, New South Wales (NSW, Fig. 1A,), Australia. It is compared with Soederberghia material from the upper part of the Catskill Formation, Pennsylvania (Fig. 1B), and the Cloghnan Shale at Jemalong near Forbes, NSW, Australia. The Catskill and Cloghnan Shale material, consisting of two incomplete skull roofs, appears to be conspecific with the type species, Soederberghia groenlandica from the Famennian Remigolepis Series of Greenland. This is congruent with a recent suggestion that the Mandagery Sandstone is late Frasnian in age, whereas the upper Catskill Formation and Cloghnan Shale are Famennian.
