Ultrasonic guided waves lend themselves to addressing both of these problems. This paper reports on two inspection systems for rails being developed at UCSD under the auspices of the US Federal Railroad Administration. Both systems utilize ultrasonic guided waves as the main probing mechanism, for the two different applications of flaw detection and thermal stress detection

    Describes approaches that high-speed rail authorities can use to facilitate shared use of existing rail rights-of-way. Includes analysis of Federal Railroad Administration rules and other legal guidelines. Suggests how improvements and rights swaps can minimize the outlays needed for new projects and spread the benefits to potential right-of-way partners.
