    Abstract:

    Identity Federation Systems enable participating organizations to provide services to qualified individuals and manage their identity attributes at an inter-organizational level. Most importantly, they empower individuals with control over the usage of their attributes within the Federation via enforcement of various policies. Among such policies, one of the most important yet immature one is the privacy policy. Existing frameworks proposed for privacy-preserving Federations lack the capability to support complex data-usage preferences in the form of obligations, i.e. the privacy related actions that must be performed upon certain actions on a specific piece of information. Moreover, they do not account for the history of events resulting from the interactions among Federation entities. To address these deficiencies we propose an extension to an existing assertion based policy language. More specifically, we provide a new set of assertions to define the privacy related properties of a Federation System. We extend the com-mon definition of privacy preference policies with obligation preferences. Finally, we illustrate how the proposed framework is realized among service providers to ensure proper enforcement of privacy policies and obligations.

We also propose a log-based approach for capturing the history of activities within the Federation implemented as a set of tables stored at databases at the various organizations in the Federation. We illustrate how, by using different types of queries on such tables, security properties of the Federation can be verified.

    Given the increasing number of heterogeneous data stored in relational databases, file Systems or cloud environment, it needs to be easily accessed and semantically connected for further data analytic. The potential of data Federation is largely untapped, this paper presents an interactive data Federation System (https://vimeo.com/319473546) by applying large-scale techniques including heterogeneous data Federation, natural language processing, association rules and semantic web to perform data retrieval and analytics on social network data. The System first creates a Virtual Database (VDB) to virtually integrate data from multiple data sources. Next, a RDF generator is built to unify data, together with SPARQL queries, to support semantic data search over the processed text data by natural language processing (NLP). Association rule analysis is used to discover the patterns and recognize the most important co-occurrences of variables from multiple data sources. The System demonstrates how it facilitates interactive data analytic towards different application scenarios (e.g., sentiment analysis, privacy-concern analysis, community detection).

  • Integrated access to legal literature through automated semantic classification

    Access to legal information and, in particular, to legal literature is examined for the creation of a search and retrieval System for Italian legal literature. The design and implementation of services such as integrated access to a wide range of resources are described, with a particular focus on the importance of exploiting metadata assigned to disparate legal material. The integration of structured repositories and Web documents is the main purpose of the System: it is constructed on the basis of a Federation System with service provider functions, aiming at creating a centralized index of legal resources. The index is based on a uniform metadata view created for structured data by means of the OAI approach and for Web documents by a machine learning approach, which, in this paper, has been assessed as regards document classification. Semantic searching is a major requirement for legal literature users and a solution based on the exploitation of Dublin Core metadata, as well as the use of legal ontologies and related terms prepared for accessing indexed articles have been implemented.

    The problems of accessing legal information and, in particular, legal literature are examined in conjunction with the creation of a portal to Italian legal doctrine. The design and implementation of services such as integrated access to a wide range of resources are described, with a focus on the importance of exploiting metadata assigned to disparate legal material. On the basis of the results of a survey of legal users' requirements, the main features of the planned System are presented: accurate selection of resources, user profiling and assistance in the search process, reliance on rich and consistent metadata, navigation facilities for legal literature, legislation and case-law sources. The strategies devised have been experimented, such as the mapping of both the UNIMARC format and a proprietary citation format for journal articles to the Dublin Core unqualified metadata set and to DCMI cite. These formats are extracted respectively from OPACs and from a well-established legal bibliographic database, DoGi. Specific semantic problems of legal literature indexing are tackled, mainly concerning classification Systems. Similar issues are present in legal doctrine available on the web. In particular web documents usually lack metadata and, where present, they do not usually conform to well-established metadata patterns. A research study was therefore carried out, followed by the creation of a prototype and testing with the aim of automatically providing web documents with DC metadata, thereby supporting the intellectual activity of a service provider in organizing qualified access services to web documents. The integration of structured repositories and web documents is the main purpose of the portal: it is constructed on the basis of a Federation System with service provider functions, aiming at creating a centralized index of such resources.
