    Abstract Sinusoidal Fetal Heart rate may have a spectrum of occurrence that indicates degree of Fetal morbidity. Twelve cases of intermittent sinusoidal Fetal Heart rate were reviewed for Fetal outcome. Findings of anemia, low umbilical cord pH, and large base excess support that intermittent sinusoidal Fetal Heart rate may be an early indicator of impending Fetal compromise.     Abstract:

    : Intrapartum Fetal Heart rate monitoring is commonly used to evaluate Fetal status in labor, despite a lack of convincing randomized studies to support its use. The National Institutes of Health have helped standardize Fetal Heart rate monitoring terminology with their 1997 task force report, which will aid clinicians and scientists in their goal of providing quality care and research. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has recommended the term nonreassuring Fetal status for electronic Fetal monitor patterns that are not normal; however, Vanderbilt continues to use the terms Fetal stress and Fetal distress, using specific criteria for each. The approximately 30% of Fetal Heart rate tracings labeled as Fetal stress (or nonreassuring Fetal status) can be evaluated further by the use of Fetal pulse oximetry, a new technology currently under evaluation in this country.

  • Passive acoustic maternal abdominal Fetal Heart rate monitoring using wavelet transform

    Abstract:

    We present a passive acoustic apparatus for maternal abdominal Fetal Heart rate (FHR) monitoring. The apparatus consists of an acoustic sensor module and a Laptop or a PDA embedded with signal processing algorithms. It is able to provide a calculated Fetal Heart rate instantaneously, real-time Fetal Heart sound waveform displays and audio playback. The Fetal Heart sound signals are detected, de-noised and reconstructed by utilizing wavelet transform based signal processing approach. The proposed approach improves the signal to noise ratio which allows reliable Fetal Heart rate variation to be estimated under very weak signal environment. The apparatus has gone through clinical trials in a local hospital on a sample group of 41 pregnant women.

    Fetal Heart rate variability has long been considered an indicator of Fetal health, with a decrease in variability associated with the progression of disease. The purpose of this study was to develop an index of Fetal health by applying the nonlinear analytic techniques of chaotic systems to measurements of the beat-to-beat intervals of the Fetal Heart. This study was carried out using Doppler ultrasound data obtained from 30 patients in advanced stages of pregnancy, the fetuses between 36 and 40 weeks of gestation. The index used to determine the degree of variability in the Fetal Heart, and thus the health of the fetus, was the correlation dimension (CD). This was calculated from the interbeat intervals (IBI) using the method of time delays. Results from the analysis indicated close correlation with the clinical diagnosis, showing healthy fetuses with CDs above 7 and poor outcome (low birthweight) in fetuses with CD below 7.
