However, it is a challenge to build a satisfactory Computer Aided Instruction (CAI) on Internet. Not only it is difficult to guide the users through the operations of a CAI, but also it is hard to measure the effectiveness of the CAI. This paper presents a methodology of using a set of Human Computer Interface (HCI) rules to develop a CAI for database Normalization. It applies a constructivist theory for the users to automate his/her own database design on the CAI. The result is a user friendly CAI for the users to learn and apply database Normalization skill effectively. A case study of Normalizing an data entry Form up to Fifth Normal Form is used for illustration.

ITCC (2) - An object and XML database schemas design tool

ChittayasothornAbstract:Nowadays relational database schemas are designed by using well-known database design techniques such as the entity relationship model and the Normalization process. The result schemas can be guaranteed to have minimum redundancies if the Fifth Normal Form (5NF) is achieved. However, in more recent database schema design such as the design of object database schema, the concern about minimum redundancies does not seem to be an important issue. Functional dependencies may still appear in an object class of the class diagram thus introduce update anomalies. This article first presents the use of NIAM, a well-established conceptual schema model, as a conceptual model for the design of object databases. A transFormation from a NIAM to an OODB schema with minimum redundancy is presented. The conceptual schema can also be transFormed into Extensible Markup Language (XML) which is originally a language for document management. However, it now gains popularity in database representation. It is particularly useful as a data Format when an application must communicate with another application. This article also presents the NIAM conceptual schema model as a conceptual design tool for XML schema. A software tool that allows users to create NIAM schemas and generate object and XML schemas is developed.

An extended NIAM conceptual schema model for object databases

ChittayasothornAbstract:The NIAM conceptual schema model that shows the distinction between entity types and label types. In its original Form, NIAM emphasises the use of external identifiers for entity types. The unique identifiers and other label types are transFormed into attributes of relational database schemata. There are well-defined algorithms that transForm a NIAM conceptual schema to the Fifth Normal Form relational database schemata. This is possible because the NIAM model shows fact types and reference types some of which can be transFormed into relationships between attributes. This paper presents ENIAM, an extension to NIAM which is suitable to be implemented on object databases. It introduces new concepts of category type, the main schema and sub schemas together with a transFormation algorithm from an ENIAM conceptual schema into object database schema.

A Formal approach to schema design for engineering databases

AbudayyehAbstract:Abstract With the continued use of databases in engineering applications and the continued proliferation of engineering data, the importance of proper database design needs increasing attention. This paper introduces a new data modeling methodology called Nijssen's InFormation Analysis Methodology (NIAM). NIAM is a graphical modeling language used to design conceptual schemas that can be mapped onto any database model such as the relational and hierarchical data models. The paper describes a procedure, called the Optimal Normal Form algorithm, for mapping a NIAM conceptual schema onto a Fifth Normal Form relational data model. An example from the construction management domain is used to describe the principles and concepts of the NIAM modeling methodology.

This paper presents a new data, modeling methodology called NIAM. NIAM is a graphical modeling language used to design conceptual schemas that can be mapped onto any data-base model, e.g., the relational and hierarchical data models. The paper describes a procedure, called the optimal Normal Form algorithm, for mapping a NIAM conceptual schema onto a Fifth Normal Form relational data model. It then provides a brief background on the relational data model and the Normalization process. Examples from the construction management domain are used to describe the principles and concepts of the NIAM modeling methodology.
