    Abstract:

    Personal health record (PHR) is an emerging patient-centric model of\nhealth information exchange, which is often outsourced to be stored at a\nthird party, such as cloud providers. However, there have been wide\nprivacy concerns as personal health information could be exposed to\nthose third party servers and to unauthorized parties. To assure the\npatients' control over access to their own PHRs, it is a promising\nmethod to encrypt the PHRs before outsourcing. Yet, issues such as risks\nof privacy exposure, scalability in key management, flexible access, and\nefficient user revocation, have remained the most important challenges\ntoward achieving fine-grained, cryptographically enforced data access\ncontrol. In this paper, we propose a novel patient-centric framework and\na suite of mechanisms for data access control to PHRs stored in\nsemitrusted servers. To achieve fine-grained and scalable data access\ncontrol for PHRs, we leverage attribute-based encryption (ABE)\ntechniques to encrypt each patient's PHR File. Different from previous\nworks in secure data outsourcing, we focus on the multiple data owner\nscenario, and divide the users in the PHR system into multiple security\ndomains that greatly reduces the key management complexity for owners\nand users. A high degree of patient privacy is guaranteed simultaneously\nby exploiting multiauthority ABE. Our scheme also enables dynamic\nmodification of access policies or File Attributes, supports efficient\non-demand user/attribute revocation and break-glass access under\nemergency scenarios. Extensive analytical and experimental results are\npresented which show the security, scalability, and efficiency of our\nproposed scheme.

    Perspective uses a new semantic Filesystem construct, the view, to simplify management of distributed storage in the home. A view is a semantic description of a set of Files, specified as a a query on File Attributes. In Perspective, users can identify and control the Files stored on a given device by examining and modifying the views associated with it. This approach allows them to reason about what is where in the same way (semantic naming) as they navigate their digital content. Thus, in serving as their own administrators, users do not have to deal with a second data organization scheme (hierarchical naming) to perform replica management tasks, such as specifying redundancy to provide reliability and data partitioning to address device capacity exhaustion. A set of extensive user studies confirm the difficulties created by current approaches and the efficacy of view-based data management.
