    Abstract:

    With the development of virtualization technology, File Protection in virtual machine, especially in guest OS, becomes more and more important. Traditional host-based File Protection system resides the critical modules in monitored system, which is easily explored and destroyed by malwares. Moreover, in order to protect the multiple operation systems running on the same platform, it is necessary to install independent File Protection system for each of them, which greatly wastes computing resources and brings serious performance overhead. In this paper, a novel VM-based real-time File Protection system, named VRFPS, is proposed to solve these problems. First, virtual machine monitor introspects all File operations of guest OS. Then, semantic gap between disk block and logic Files is narrowed by blktap. Finally, a virtual sandbox is implemented in privileged domain to prevent protected Files in guest domain from modifying illegally. Our approach is highly isolated, transparent and without modification on virtual machine monitor and guest OS. The experimental results show that the presented system is validate and of low performance overhead.

    Abstract:

    The ATLAS experiment at CERN is one of the four Large Hadron Collider ex- periments. The Detector Control System (DCS) of ATLAS is responsible for the supervision of the detector equipment, the reading of operational parame- ters, the propagation of the alarms and the archiving of important operational data in a relational database. DCS Data Viewer (DDV) is an application that provides access to the ATLAS DCS historical data through a web interface. Its design is structured using a client-server architecture. The pythonic server connects to the DB and fetches the data by using optimized SQL requests. It communicates with the outside world, by accepting HTTP requests and it can be used stand alone. The client is an AJAX interactive web application devel- oped under the Google Web Toolkit (GWT) framework. Its web interface is user friendly, platform and browser independent. The selection of metadata is done via a column-tree view or with a powerful search engine. The final visualization of the data is done using java applets or java script applications as plugins. The default output is a value-over-time chart, but other types of outputs like tables, ascii or ROOT Files are supported too. Excessive access or malicious use of the database is prevented by a dedicated Protection mechanism, allowing the expo- sure of the tool to hundreds of inexperienced users. The current configuration of the client and of the outputs can be saved in an XML File. Protection against web security attacks is foreseen and authentication constrains have been taken into account, allowing the exposure of the tool to hundreds of users world wide. Due to its flexible interface and its generic and modular approach, DDV could be easily used for other experiment control systems.

    Proper configuration of software security settings and proper File management are necessary and important elements of safe computer use. Unfortunately, the configuration of software security options is often not user friendly. Safe File management requires the use of several utilities, most of which are already installed on the computer or available as freeware. Among these File operations are setting passwords, defragmentation, deletion, wiping, removal of personal information, and encryption. For example, Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine medical images need to be anonymized, or “scrubbed,” to remove patient identifying information in the header section prior to their use in a public educational or research environment. The choices made with respect to computer security may affect the convenience of the computing process. Ultimately, the degree of inconvenience accepted will depend on the sensitivity of the Files and communications to be protected and the tolerance of the user. © RSNA, 2004
