    Abstract:

Society’s total assets as of May 31, 2014, are as follows: $2,933,887.35 • Cash accounts (community checking + money market business): $2,749,480.42 • Total CDs: $184,406.93 This report covers the period of June 1, 2013–May 31, 2014. Due to the ongoing success of Molecular Biology and Evolution (MBE) and Genome Biology and Evolution (GBE), whose revenues continue to increase, the society remains in outstanding Financial health. Society membership decreased marginally during Financial Year 2013: Membership-only subscriptions decreased from 732 in 2012 to 332 in 2013, whereas Society membership + journal subscriptions increased from 313 in 2012 to 687 in 2013. The society used its income to publish its two journals, MBE and GBE, and to support its annual meeting, in 2013, held in Chicago, IL. This included providing increased graduate and postdoctoral travel awards, funding the Walter Fitch Prize Symposium (a cash prize for the winner and travel funds for all eight contestants), running the Undergraduate Diversity Mentoring Program (UDMP), subsidizing the provision of on-site childcare, supporting the travel and accommodation of Council members, and providing travel incentives for associate editors of MBE and GBE. We also supported three satellite meetings on important, focused and timely topics related to molecular evolutionary biology. We continue to receive an annual donation of $2,000USD from Masatoshi Nei to support an honorarium for publication in MBE of the annual Nei Lecture given by the President of Society for MBE (SMBE) during the annual meeting. The 2013 Nei Lecture is to be the first lecture published under this scheme. The total value of the honorarium is to be $4,000USD. • A Critical Analysis of Union Budget for the Financial Year 2014-15
    2014
    Co-Authors: Sujoy Kumar Dhar
    Abstract:

The outcome of 2014 general election created an immense expectation from the new Government as after 1984, this is the first time when a single party has obtained absolute majority. The different stakeholders of nation had different expectations from the Government. The salaried employees were expecting a big relief in income tax. The corporate lobbies were anticipating that the Government will provide a big push to the reformist agenda as it would not require any support from coalition partners for the sake of survival. The sensitivity index of Mumbai Stock Exchange or Sensex crossed 26000 points before the honourable Finance minister Mr. Arun Jaitley placed the Union Budget on 10th July, 2014 which clearly indicated the upbeat sentiments of both Foreign Institutional Investors(FIIs) as well as Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) of India.

  • Vote on Account Union Budget for the Financial Year 2014-15
    2014
    Co-Authors: Sujoy Kumar Dhar
    Abstract:

Union budget and its direction is one of the key indicators of the economic analysis of the nation. Political parties, big corporate houses, media and common household are anxiously waiting for the Union Budget. Almost all stakeholders of the nation have different expectations from the budget which are often contradictory rather than complementary from the perspective of a developing nation like India. Corporate are lobbying for reformist budget where emphasis is provided on the market economy and policies adopted by the Government are mostly investor friendly. Households are looking for direct and indirect tax cut which can provide them temporary relief from the continuous price hike. Opposition parties are searching for loopholes in the budget in order to do constructive criticism when debate takes place in the Parliament on placed budget before it goes for voting. Media represents the entire issue in their own style depending on their direct or indirect affiliation towards a particular political party or a specific ideology. Stock market is also very much sensitive to the budget as market index gets stimulated if the budget is not populist by nature or vice versa. Vote on account budget is placed when general election in the nation is due. Therefore the Finance Minister of the nation places interim budget. Once the new Government is formed after the general election, New Finance Minister places the full fledged budget in the table of Parliament. The honorable finance minister of India Mr. P. Chidambaram placed the vote on account budget in 2014 February .According to the constitutional requirement, new Government should be formed in India latest by 31st May, 2014. Usually union budget is placed in the last working day of February but for interim budget the same is not applicable as interim budget has to be placed and passed in the Parliament before the declaration of general election by the Central Election Commission. Once the schedule of general election is officially announced, the model code of conduct is implemented from that very moment. It is true that interim budget is not as important as the general union budget both in terms of scope and direction; still it gives the last chance to the outgoing Government to strike a balance between populist and reformist policies.

  • Union Budget for the Financial Year 2013-14 – A Critical Analysis
    2013
    Co-Authors: Sujoy Kumar Dhar
    Abstract:

The Union Budget is one of the major macroeconomic indicators which are usually considered as the crucial parameters for economic analysis of a nation. In layman perspective, budget is just forecasted income and expenditure statement of the Central Government for the following Fiscal Year as conventionally budget is placed in the Parliament by the Union Finance Minister in the name of the President of India on the last working day of the February. Discussion and debate goes on in both upper and lower house of parliament about the merit and demerit of the proposed budget. After the discussion is over, budget has to be passed in both the houses by voice vote or by division.

    2019
    Co-Authors: Sophie Brill, Beck Wallace
    Abstract:

The UK Modern Slavery Act 2015 requires organizations with a turnover of over £36m to make a public statement on steps they are taking to identify and prevent modern slavery in their operations and supply chains. Oxfam GB advocated for this policy development, and this statement relates to steps taken in relation to our own operations and supply chains. In this, our fourth statement, we share updated information about our due diligence processes, our assessment of the risk of Oxfam GB contributing to modern slavery through its operations and supply chains and the new commitments we have made to address some of these risks.

  • Oxfam GB Statement on Modern Slavery for the Financial Year 2016/17
    2017
    Co-Authors: Alex Cole-hamilton, Beck Wallace
    Abstract:

The UK Modern Slavery Act 2015 requires organizations with a turnover of at least £36m to make a public statement on steps they are taking to identify and prevent modern slavery in their operations and supply chain. Oxfam GB advocated for this policy development, and this statement relates to steps taken in relation to our own operations and supply chain. Our first statement gave detailed information about our policies and processes in order to demonstrate transparency on this challenging issue and to encourage other companies to be transparent. This 2017 statement is an update on progress against the commitments made in our first statement and shares two case studies of how we work.
