Comparison of the data with those from other Spanish populations reveal, that the Murcian male values are within the range of Spanish variation, whereas the female sample is characterized by extreme frequencies of arches (maximal) and whorls (minimal). This is significantly different from most of the populations compared.

Quantitative Finger Dermatoglyphics in the Mediterranean region of Murcia, Spain
International Journal of Anthropology, 1992Co-Authors: E Esteban, P MoralAbstract:Quantitative Finger Dermatoglyphics have been analyzed in a Spanish population on the Mediterranean coast, from a sample of 347 individuals (163 males and 184 females) whose four grandparents were born in the studied region (Murcia). From the prints of the sampled individuals, radial, ulnar, and maximal ridge counts have been examined using classical methodology according to the pattern orientation. Kolmogorov test was used to evaluate the normality of the count values. Paired t-test, t-test for two samples, and Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney non-parametric U test were used to explore bimanual and sexual differences. Maximal and radial ridge counts show similar distributions fitting into a normal distribution. Instead, ulnar values show a particular distribution clearly different from normality. The bilateral and sexual differentiation patterns reveal the divergence between the ulnar counts and the maximal and radial values. In comparison to other Iberian populations our results show a particular position of Murcia with the lowest TFRC values in the Spanish variation ranges.

Genetic Determinants of 22 Quantitative Dermatoglyphic Traits in the Chuvashian Population of Russia: Complex Segregation Analysis

However, little is known about their pattern of inheritance due to lack of advanced statistical genetic model-fitting techniques despite the existence of advanced statistical packages. Objectives: The aim of the present study is to determine the mode of inheritance of dermatoglyphic traits through complex segregation analysis. Subjects and Methods: Finger and palmar prints of 325 individuals belonging to 104 families from the Chuvashian popu- lation of Russia were used for principal component analysis, familial correlation, and segregation analysis (package MAN-5). Results: The results suggest a common internal structure of three factors when compared with other populations. (b) Sig- nificant familial correlations (except spouse) indicate the involvement of familial components to the variation of dermato- glyphic traits. (c) Segregation analysis reveals the transmission of genetic effects in the families, which follows the Men- delian model and confirm major gene effect on factors 1 and 2, whereas there is no evidence of major gene effect or an environmental effect on factor 3. Conclusion: Major gene involvement with Mendelian expectation regarding Finger Dermatoglyphics is confirmed for all analyzed traits. However there is no evidence of significant support for major gene effect or environmental effect on pal- mar a-b ridge counts.

Biol. 32:445–468) was on 500 pedigrees of five different populations, with factor 1 comprising quantitative Finger Dermatoglyphics (including pattern intensity index, PII) and factor 1 controlled by major genes. The present results of a complex segregation analysis of the individual trait PII of the same five populations were compared with previous results to ascertain the extent of variation between individual trait PII and its factor (factor 1) with respect to mode of inheritance. The comparative findings are very similar in five populations, irrespective of different ethnic groups. This result suggests that the variability of their biological relevance is influenced by the same genetic component, thus representing a similar mode of inheritance with major gene involvement in all populations. However, advanced statistical packages for complex segregation analyses are available and the aim of the present study is to determine the mode of dermatoglyphic trait inheritance in five different ethnic populations. METHODS: Five hundred families (2435 individuals) of two generations were used for principal component analysis, familial correlation and segregation analysis (package MAN-5). RESULTS: The similarity of three factors suggests a common internal structure. Significant familial correlation (except spouse) indicates the involvement of a familial component in the variation of dermatoglyphic traits. Segregation analyses suggest the transmission of a genetic effect in the families which follows the Mendelian model and confirms a major gene effect on factor 1 and factor 2 with two co-dominant alleles. There is no evidence of a major gene effect or environmental effect on factor 3 (a-b ridge counts). The nature of transmission and trait variance (H2) strongly supports the existence of a common nature of dermatoglyphic trait inheritance in populations, irrespective of ethnic and geographic area. CONCLUSION: Major gene involvement in Finger Dermatoglyphics according to Mendelian models is confirmed.

Correlations of indices of personality traits with indexes of Finger and palmar Dermatoglyphics of practically healthy Ukrainian men

GunasAbstract:The search for new psychodermatoglyphic correlations will greatly increase the possibilities of this method and will accelerate the introduction of scientific developments into the daily practice of clinicians, criminologists, police and other specialties. The purpose of the work is to establish the peculiarities of the relationship between the indexes of the Finger and palmar Dermatoglyphics and the characteristics of the personality traits of practically healthy Ukrainian men. From the data bank of the materials of the research center of National Pirogov Memorial Medical University, Vinnytsya were taken the primary questionnaires of indicators of personality characteristics and dermatoglyphic indicators of 92 practically healthy men residents of Podillia region of Ukraine in the third generation. Processing of indicators of Finger and palmar Dermatoglyphics was performed according to the method of Cummins H. and Midlo Ch. (1961) in the statement by Gladkova T. D. (1966). To assess the characteristics of personality characteristics we determined properties of temperament (according to Eysenck), anxiety (according to Spielberger), accentuated personality traits (according to Shmishek), motivational orientation of the personality (according to Rotter), as well as features of the emotional organization of personality, aggressiveness, level of personality manifestations (according to Luscher). Correlation analysis was performed in the “Statistica 6.1” license package using Pearson statistics. It has been established that in the majority of cases, indicators of personality traits and dermatoglyphic indices of almost healthy men show single direct and inverse, mostly weak forces (r=0.21 – 0.29 and r=-0.21 – -0.28, respectively) correlations. The multiple nature of such correlations is established only between the Luscher gray color index and the left hand I, III and IV Fingers and the left hand I and II Fingers ridge count, the total ridge count of both hands, the total ridge count and the left hand delta index (r=-0.23 – -0.28) and between most indicators by Rotter subjective scale and the presence of a pattern on the thenar of the corresponding palm (on the right hand – r=0.31 - 0.37 and on the left hand – r=0.22 - 0.29). The results of quantitative analysis of significant correlations showed that between the indexes of the Finger Dermatoglyphics and the indicators of personality traits according to Eysenck and Luscher, most relationships are inverse, and with Spielberger, Shmishek and Rotter – direct; between the indexes of the palmar Dermatoglyphics and the indicators of personality traits according to Spielberger and Luscher, most reliable relationships are inverse, and with the indicators according to Eysenck, Shmishek and Rotter - direct. The results of the correlation analysis allowed us to determine the most significant relationships between the indexes of the Finger and palmar Dermatoglyphics and the characteristics of the personality traits of practically healthy Ukrainian men.

GunasAbstract:The variability of Fingerprints is widely used to identify a person in criminology, as adiagnostic-prognostic marker system in medicine and in the study of multi-vectoredethnogenetic processes in population surveys that cover different regions of the state.The purpose of the study is to outline the local structure of the male population ofUkraine by analyzing the indicators of digital Dermatoglyphics for information on the vectorof evolution of the local population. Dermatoglyphic study was performed using H.Cummins and Ch. Midlo for 400 practically healthy men from different administrative-territorial regions of Ukraine. Statistical processing of the obtained results was carried outin the package STATISTICA 6.1 using nonparametric methods. High heterogeneity wasestablished on the basis of qualitative and quantitative indicators of signs of digitalDermatoglyphics among the following administrative-territorial groups: between theinhabitants of central and southern (22.22% of indicators), central and eastern (20.37% ofindicators) of central and western (15.74%), northern and southern (17.59% of indicators),northern and western (16.67% of indicators), northern and eastern (15.74% of indicators),western and eastern (12.04% of indicators) and southern and eastern (12.04% ofindicators) of the regions of Ukraine. Significant homogeneity was detected in terms ofqualitative and quantitative indicators of signs of digital Dermatoglyphics inherent in men,residents of the northern and central regions of Ukraine (differences are recorded at 7(6.48%) indicators, as well as men living in the southern and western regions of thecountry (differences are recorded for 10-9.26% of indicators of only qualitativecharacteristics.) The obtained results allowed to distinguish two dermatological complexeson the territory of Ukraine: local north-central and local south-western.
