Antioxidant defense system is altered by dietary oxidized lipid in first-feeding rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

A dietary phospholipid (PL) supply has been shown to be beneficial during these critical stages. The objective of the study was to characterize the response of the antioxidant defense system under dietary prooxidant conditions in presence or absence of dietary PL during early development of rainbow trout. Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) at the first-feeding fry stage (mean weight: 66 ± 2 mg) or at the Fingerling stage (mean weight: 1.5 ± 0.4 g) were fed 4 semi-purified diets supplemented with 12% fresh fish oil or 12% oxidized fish oil and 6% soybean lecithin or 6% soybean oil for 4 weeks at 17 °C. At fry stages, rainbow trout fry fed the PL-supplemented diets had a significantly higher final body weight than fry fed the PL-free diets (0.37 ± 0.07 vs. 0.27 ± 0.03 g, respectively). Dietary inclusion of oxidized lipid reduced growth (0.19 ± 0.02 vs. 0.45 ± 0.07 and 2.5 ± 0.6 vs. 4.8 ± 0.6 g, respectively) and increased the mRNA expression of antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione reductase and glutathione S-transferase at both developmental stages. However, dietary control of antioxidant enzyme activities and vitamins was low in rainbow trout fry whereas increased activities of antioxidant enzymes and decreased tocopherol contents were noticed in rainbow trout Fingerlings fed oxidized lipid compared to rainbow trout fry fed fresh oil. This resulted in higher content of lipid peroxidation products in rainbow trout fry fed oxidized lipid compared to fish fed fresh lipid whereas this difference was reduced at the Fingerling stage. The present study demonstrates that rainbow trout fry are more susceptible to oxidative stress induced by dietary oxidized lipid than rainbow trout Fingerlings, possibly due to delayed response or lack of complete development of endogenous antioxidant defense system

RA and AR hybrid larvae were reared to Fingerling stage with survival rates of 22.5 and 28% and average weight of 6.8 ± 0.17 g and 9.0 ± 0.79 g, respectively. A heterosis of 45% was calculated for weight at Fingerling stage. RA and AR hybrid Fingerlings were cultured in polyculture along with Chinese carps for 6–7 mo and reached an average weight of 190–195 g and 235–255 g, respectively. Karyotyping of these hybrids revealed a modal diploid number of 2n = 50 for both groups, which is similar to those of the parental species. Effectiveness of Walleye Fry and Fingerling Stocking in Rathbun Lake, Iowa, 1990–1999
North American Journal of Fisheries Management, 2002Co-Authors: Larry MitznerAbstract:Abstract I evaluated the performance of walleyes Stizostedion vitreum in Rathbun Lake, Iowa, by comparing stockings of fry, intensively reared Fingerlings, and extensively reared Fingerlings (fall and spring) during 1984–1999. The management goal was to triple the biomass of walleye adults (>17.5 in). Fry were stocked at 2,000/acre (1984–1995) and 3,000/acre (1996–1999), extensively reared Fingerlings were stocked at 10/acre (1984–1990), and intensively reared Fingerlings were stocked at 5/acre (1985–1999). Spring- and fall-stocked Fingerlings were also compared during 1992–1999. Fry stockings were highly variable, but produced large year-classes in 1985, 1986, 1993, 1995, 1997, and 1998. October samplings of Fingerlings, which originated from fry stockings, yielded 9–27 fish/acre. Intensively reared Fingerling survival was about four times greater than that of the smaller, extensively reared Fingerlings. Evaluation of Walleye Fingerling and Fry Stocking in Rathbun Lake, Iowa
North American Journal of Fisheries Management, 1992Co-Authors: Larry MitznerAbstract:Abstract Fry and Fingerling stockings of walleye Stizostedion vitreum at Rathbun Lake were evaluated from 1984 to 1989 to determine the stocking strategy necessary to triple the lake's walleye biomass. Daily loss of fry for the first 25 d ranged from 12% in 1984 to 26% in 1987. In August cove samples, densities of walleyes stocked as fry were estimated at 2–14/acre, whereas October mark-recapture estimates were 2–27/acre. Fingerlings stocked in October were either extensively cultured in Spirit Lake nursery lakes or were intensively cultured at Rathbun Hatchery on a pelleted diet. In terms of overwinter survival, Fingerlings stocked as fry were superior to those stocked as Fingerlings in October. Of the Fingerlings stocked in October, Rathbun walleyes (reared in tanks on pellet diet) had greater survival than did Fingerlings from nursery lakes.
