    Noise exposure of Firefighters results in increased risk of hearing loss. Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) can be prevented by the consistent use of hearing protection devices (HPDs). However, little is known about Firefighters' perceptions and attitudes on NIHL and HPD use. The purposes of the study were (1) to identify common noise sources of Fire fighting equipment and activities; and (2) to describe the attitudes and beliefs of Firefighters concerning the importance of their hearing, occupational noise exposure, NIHL, and HPD use. A nonexperimental, descriptive focus group design was used to gather qualitative data from Firefighters at two Fire Houses in southeast Michigan. The study identified sources of noise unique to Fire fighting, such as driving Fire/emergency trucks with sirens on; operating water pumps, saws, and other equipment; and shouting to communicate with civilians and fellow Firefighters.   • Fast-food density and obesity among professional Firefighters

    Abstract:

    Although the general US population has maintained stable physical activity patterns in the last 20 years, the average weight of the US population has increase by 15 pounds since the early 1990s. Concurrently, the US spending on fast food has increased from $6 to $110 billion. The caloric value and fat content in fast food may have a broader impact on the overall diet and health of individuals but weight gain is still the most immediate effect. High caloric intake generally is higher among people who report eating at fast food restaurants. The local environment has shown to have an impact on the eating habits of individuals and fast-food density has been associated with obesity ( Rundle et al., 2009 ). While there is no gold standard for fast-food density, in the present study it is determined by using geographically-based information with ReferenceUSA ® data base ( D'Angelo, Fleischhacker, Rose, & Ribisl, 2014 ). This allows to gather historical information on the number of fast-food outlets surrounding each Firehouse during the years of the study.  Although most studies on the availability of food have focused on the effects of healthy/unhealthy food in neighboring residents, Firefighters working 24-96 consecutive hours spend enough time to interact with the environment surrounding their Fire Houses. Firefighters have progressively become the third heaviest occupational group in the country and although important work-related factors have been identified, the role of the neighboring food environment is still unknown ( Choi, Dobson, Schnall, & Garcia-Rivas, 2016 ). The principal objective of this study is to explore the effects of fast-food density on the individual and collective weight of professional Firefighters. The specific aims of this study are to a) explore the relationship between fast food density and obesity among Firefighters and b) determine whether shift-work is an effect modifier between fast food density and obesity among Firefighters. This work is among the few to examine the neighboring food environment and its effects on a long-shift working population.
