During October 2011–April 2012, the concentrations of Hg in water, suspended particulate matter, and sediment of the three experimental Fish Ponds located in Sha Tau Kok Organic Farm were monitored, and the results were similar to or lower than those detected in commercial Fish Ponds around the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region (by comparing data of previous and present studies). Health risk assessments indicated that human consumption of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus), a herbivore which fed food waste feed pellets would be safer than other Fish species: mud carp (Cirrhina molitorella), bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis), and largemouth bass (Lepomis macrochirus). Due to the lower species diversity and substantially shorter food chains of the polyculture system consisting of only three Fish species, the extent of Hg biomagnification was significantly lower than other polyculture Ponds around PRD. Furthermore, the use of food waste instead of Fish meal (mainly consisted of contaminated trash Fish) further reduced the mercury accumulation in the cultured Fish.

Three types of Fish feed pellets (control diet: Jinfeng® 613 formulated feed, contains mainly Fish meal, plant product and Fish oil; Diet A: food waste based diet without meat and 53% cereal; Diet B: food waste based diet with 25% meat and 28% cereal) were used in polyculture Fish Ponds to investigate the growth of Fish (grass carp, bighead and mud carp), changes in water quality and plankton density. No significant differences in the levels of nitrogen and phosphorous compounds of water body were observed between 3 Fish Ponds after the half-year feeding trial, while pond receiving Diet A had the highest density of plankton. The food waste combination of Diet B seems to be a better formulation in terms of the overall performance on Fish growth.

The total As concentrations detected in Fish muscle and sediment in freshwater Ponds around the PRD were 0.05–3.01 mg kg−1 wet weight (w. wt) and 8.41–22.76 mg kg−1 dry weight (d. wt), respectively. In addition, the As content was positively correlated (p < 0.05) to total organic carbon (TOC) contents in sediments. Biota sediment accumulation factor (BSAF) showed that omnivorous Fish and zooplankton accumulated higher concentrations of heavy metals from the sediment than carnivorous Fish. In addition, feeding habits of Fish also influence As accumulation in different Fish species. In this study, two typical food chains of the aquaculture Ponds were selected for investigation: (1) omnivorous food chain (zooplankton, grass carp and bighead carp) and (2) predatory food chain (zooplankton, mud carp and mandarin Fish). Significant linear relationships were obtained between log As and δ15N. The slope of the regression (−0.066 and −0.078) of the log transformed As concentrations and δ15N values, as biomagnifications power, indicated there was no magnification or diminution of As from lower trophic levels (zooplankton) to Fish in the aquaculture Ponds. Consumption of largemouth bass, northern snakehead and bighead carp might impose health risks of Hong Kong residents consuming these Fish to the local population, due to the fact that its cancer risk (CR) value exceeded the upper limit of the acceptable risk levels (10−4) stipulated by the USEPA.

The concentrations of THg and MeHg in Fish pond surface sediments were 33.1–386 ng g−1 dry wt and 0.18–1.25 ng g−1 dry wt, respectively. The age of Ponds affected the surface sediment MeHg concentration. The vertical distribution of MeHg in sediment cores showed that MeHg concentrations decreased with increasing depth in the top 10 cm. In addition, a significant correlation was observed between %MeHg and DNA from Desulfovibrionacaea or Desulfobulbus (p < 0.05) in sediment cores. Concentrations of THg and MeHg in Fish muscles ranged from 7.43–76.7 to 5.93–76.1 ng g−1 wet wt, respectively, with significant linear relationships (r = 0.97, p < 0.01, n = 122) observed between THg and MeHg levels in Fish. A significant correlation between THg concentrations in Fish (herbivorous: r = 0.71, p < 0.05, n = 7; carnivorous: r = 0.77, p < 0.05, n = 11) and corresponding sediments was also obtained. Risk assessment indicated that the consumption of largemouth bass and mandarin Fish would result in higher estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of MeHg than reference dose (RfD) for both adults and children.

legacy and alternative flame retardants in typical freshwater cultured Fish Ponds of south china implications for evolving industry and pollution control

ZengAbstract:The production and usage of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) has been gradually phased out and the application of alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs) has been continuously increased. It is essential to understand how the evolving flame retardants industry has affected the occurrence and flux of legacy and alternative flame retardants so that better pollution control measures can be made accordingly. Air, rainwater, inflowing river water, pond water, pond sediment, Fish feed, and Fish collected from freshwater cultured Fish Ponds (FWCFPs) within the Pearl River Delta, South China were analyzed for PBDEs and AHFRs. Concentrations of AHFRs in air (range; median: 7.8-870; 210 pg m-3), rainwater (0.88-65; 4.8 ng L-1), and sediment (19-120; 54 ng g-1 dry weight (d.w.)) were one order of magnitude higher than those of PBDEs in air (12-98; 21 pg m-3), rainwater (0.18-15; 0.70 ng L-1), and sediment (1.5-9.6, 2.9 ng g-1 d.w.) (t-test; p < 0.05). Decabromodiphenyl ether and decabromodiphenylethane were the predominant BDE and AHFR components, respectively, agreeing well with the production and usage patterns of flame retardants in China. The average input fluxes of AHFRs to the FWCFPs via dry deposition, wet deposition, net air-water exchange, and feeding (38.6, 20.6, and 2.14, μg m-2 yr-1) were one order of magnitude higher than those of PBDEs (3.44, 5.17, and -10.1, μg m-2 yr-1). Elevated occurrence and input fluxes of AHFRs suggested that aquaculture production is potentially facing a new challenge from alternative flame retardants. Atmospheric dry and wet deposition are important input sources of AHFRs to the FWCFPs. Feeding is an important input pathway for both PBDEs and AHFRs. Pollution control measures should be modified to accommodate the evolving flame retardants industry.

Input pathways of organochlorine pesticides to typical freshwater cultured Fish Ponds of South China: hints for pollution control.

ZengAbstract:Air, rain, pond water, bank soil, pond sediment, Fish feed, and Fish were sampled from four freshwater cultured Fish Ponds (FWCFPs) in rural areas within the Pearl River Delta (PRD) of South China. Compositional analyses indicated that historical residues were the main sources of DDXs (defined as the sum of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (DDD), and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) and 1-chloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethane (p,p′-DDMU)), and hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) in the FWCFPs. The input fluxes to the FWCFPs were estimated at 4.0, 1.6, 15, and −0.92 µg/m2·year for DDXs and 3.8, 0.92, 2.9, and −1.4 µg/m2·year for HCHs for dry deposition, wet deposition, feeding, and net air-water exchange in Dongguan, and 3.8, 1.2, 137, and −1.2 µg/m2·year for DDXs and 3.6, 0.66, 5.0, and −1.0 µg/m2·year for HCHs in Shunde, respectively. These results indicated that Fish feed was the dominant input source of DDXs to the FWCFPs. As for HCHs, fluxes via dry deposition and feeding were similar and slightly higher than those via wet deposition. Biological effects due to the occurrence of DDXs in the FWCFPs were minimal, and consumption of freshwater Fish from the PRD appeared to pose insignificant risk to human health based on some existing regulations and guidelines. Translocation of Nuphar lutea (L.) Sibth. & Sm. from the A2 road near Nowy Tomyśl (Poland) into alternative sites

All rhizomes were taken out of the water and used to prepare cuttings. These were divided into three approximately homogeneous groups. Each group was introduced into different replacement water bodies with environmental conditions that resembled those of the biotope in the PrπdUwka site. Two of the water bodies were Fish Ponds. A third was a so called Cecological water bodyi (settling pond, settling basin) that collected fall effluents delivered from the surface of motorway. The results of the examination of the physical-chemical features of water and bottom sediments from the PrπdUwka peat pit, two Fish Ponds and four settling basins are presented in the article. Biological and autecological features of the species Nuphar lutea , which are significant from the aspect of the growth of the seedlings within the alternative sites, have been discussed. A year after translocation it was observed that in the case of Fish Ponds, 83% and 75% of the introduced plants survived, while in the settling basin only 50%. A conservation project was undertaken by the investor in order to compensate for the negative effects of the A2 motorway within the area of the European Ecological Natura 2000 Network.
