Reclamation of Steppe and Related Desertification in Three Temperate Zones of North Hemisphere

There are 300~400 mm annual precipitation and Flat Landforms, which favor for the animal husbandry. Some references about the large scale reclamation for dry farming and the resulting desertification and sand sources have been collected and showed in the paper based on investigation data and documents.

Earth Surface Processes and Landforms, 2013Co-Authors: Jo De Waele, Mario PariseAbstract:Comments are presented on the article by Canora et al. (2012) dealing with karst morphologies driven by sea level stands in the Murge plateau of Apulia, southern Italy. Our comments start from cave levels, that are considered in the cited article as a proof of sea level stands. We argue that the presence of sub-horizontal passages in cave systems is not a sufficient condition for correlating them with hypothetical past sea level stands. Such a correlation must be based upon identification of speleogenetic features within the karst systems, and/or geological field data. The problems encountered when using cave surveys for scientific research, and their low reliability (especially in the case of old surveys) are then treated, since they represent a crucial point in the paper object of this discussion. Eventually, we present some final consideration on cave levels and terraces, and on the specific case study, pointing out once again to the need in including geological field data to correctly find a correspondance between Flat Landforms and sea level fluctuations. Our main conclusion is that field data and information on speleogenesis of the underground karst Landforms cannot be disregarded in a study that claims to deal with the influence of sea-level changes on caves. Plant communities of the thermophilous oak forests in Moravia
Preslia, 1997Co-Authors: Milan Chytrý, Jaroslav HorákAbstract:A phytosociological synthesis of the order Quercetalia pubescenti-petraeae Klika 1933 in Moravia, the eastern part of the Czech Republic, is based on 319 releves. Three alliances and 8 associations are distinguished. The alliance Quercion pubescenti-petraeae Br.-Bl. 1932 includes thermophilous oak forests on calcareous bedrocks with two associations: Pruno mahaleb-Quercetum pubescentis Jakucs et Fekete 1957 and Corno-Quercetum Mathe et Kovacs 1962. The alliance Aceri tatarici-Quercion Zolyomi 1957 occurs in southern Moravia only, and includes the Pannonian communities of Flat Landforms, namely the associations Quercetum pubescenti-cerris (Zolyomi 1957) Michalko et Džatko 1965 on chernozems over loess and Carici fritschii-Quercetum cerris ass. nova on sand. Communities of the Central European alliance Quercion petraeae Zolyomi et Jakucs ex Jakucs 1960 are mainly concentrated in the upland fringes of the Bohemian Massif. They comprise the associations Sorbo torminalis-Quercetum Svoboda ex Blažkova 1962 and Genisto pilosae-Quercetum petraeae Zolyomi, Jakucs et Fekete ex Soo 1963 on shallow soils over siliceous rocks, as well as Potentillo albae-Quercetum Libbert 1933 on heavy loamy soils and Asplenio cuneifolii-Quercetum petraeae ass. nova on serpentines.

Semi-automated recognition of planation surfaces and other Flat Landforms: a case study from the Aggtelek Karst, Hungary
Open Geosciences, 2015Co-Authors: Michal Veselský, Peter Bandura, Libor Burian, Tatiana Harciníková, Pavel BellaAbstract:Abstract This study deals with the possibilities of expertdriven semi-automated recognition of planation surfaces and other Flat Landforms in the area of the Aggtelek Karst, Hungary. Planation surfaces are the most debatable and vague Landforms and can be defined as parts of terrain formed by long-lasting erosion-denudation processes under the stagnant erosion base conditions. In terms of denudation chronology they can be considered as morphological indicators of different evolution stages of area. In karst areas planation surfaces and river terraces are mostly correlated with cave levels, which originated in relation to the same stagnant erosion base. Because there is no general method of delineation of planation surfaces, the main objective of the study was to find a suitable method for semi-automated recognition of Flat Landforms in the Aggtelek Karst, which should correspond to different phases of the Jósva River incision and therefore could be correlated to the multilevel cave system of the study area. Several methods for semi-automated landform classification were tested for recognition of Flat surfaces in a relatively objective way. Slope gradient thresholding tool, and r.param.scale and r.geomorphon modules implemented in GRASS GIS were tested. As a result, the r.geomorphon module was proven as the most suitable method for delineation of relatively Flat surfaces. Findings of the presented work can be used as a morphological indicator of the comprehensive reconstruction of evolution of the Aggtelek Karst and the Slovak Karst.
