    Abstract:

This work focuses on the long-standing problem of inertial dynamics of an interface with interfacial mass flux and reports new mechanisms for the interface stabilization and destabilization. The interface is a phase boundary separating Fluids of different densities and having interfacial mass flux. To analyze the interface dynamics from a far field, we develop and apply the general matrix method to rigorously solve the boundary value problem involving the governing equations in the Fluid Bulk and the boundary conditions at the interface and at the outside boundaries of the domain. We find the fundamental solutions for the linearized system of equations and analyze the interplay of interface stability with flow fields’ structure by directly linking rigorous mathematical attributes to physical observables. We find that the interface is stable when the dynamics conserves the fluxes of mass, momentum, and energy; the stabilization is due to an inertial mechanism causing small oscillations of the interface velocity. In the classic Landau’s dynamics, the postulate of perfect constancy of the interface velocity leads to the development of Landau–Darrieus instability. This destabilization is also linked to the imbalance of the perturbed energy at the interface. The classic Landau’s solution is found to have degeneracy; lifting of the degeneracy may lead to singularity and self-similar dynamics. Our results compare well with traditional theories of combustion and propose new experiments to study the dynamics of the interface and the flow fields in combustible systems. We further conduct reactive molecular dynamics simulations to elucidate the complexity of chemical processes, to study the destabilizing effect of energy fluctuations on the interface stability, and to illustrate the chemistry-induced instabilities. In summary, we identify the extreme sensitivity of the interface dynamics to the interfacial boundary conditions, including the formal properties of fundamental solutions and the qualitative and quantitative properties of the flow fields. This provides new opportunities for studies, diagnostics, and control of multiphase flows in a broad range of processes in nature and technology.

    Abstract:

We develop a general matrix method to analyze from a far field the dynamics of an accelerated interface between incompressible ideal Fluids of different densities with interfacial mass flux and with negligible density variations and stratification. We rigorously solve the linearized boundary value problem for the dynamics conserving mass, momentum, and energy in the Bulk and at the interface. We find a new hydrodynamic instability that develops only when the acceleration magnitude exceeds a threshold. This critical threshold value depends on the magnitudes of the steady velocities of the Fluids, the ratio of their densities, and the wavelength of the initial perturbation. The flow has potential velocity fields in the Fluid Bulk and is shear-free at the interface. The interface stability is set by the interplay of inertia and gravity. For weak acceleration, inertial effects dominate, and the flow fields experience stable oscillations. For strong acceleration, gravity effects dominate, and the dynamics is unstable. For strong accelerations, this new hydrodynamic instability grows faster than accelerated Landau-Darrieus and Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities. For given values of the Fluids' densities and their steady Bulk velocities, and for a given magnitude of acceleration, we find the critical and maximum values of the initial perturbation wavelength at which this new instability can be stabilized and at which its growth is the fastest. • numerical simulation of heat and mass transfer in direct membrane distillation in a hollow fiber module with laminar flow
    Journal of Membrane Science, 2011
Co-Authors: Hui Yu, Xing Yang, Rong Wang, A G Fane
    Abstract:

The heat and mass transfer processes in direct contact membrane distillation (MD) under laminar flow conditions have been analyzed by computational Fluid dynamics (CFD). A two-dimensional heat transfer model was developed by coupling the latent heat, which is generated during the MD process, into the energy conservation equation. In combination with the Navies–Stokes equations, the thermal boundary layer build-up, membrane wall temperatures, temperature polarization coefficient (TPC), local heat transfer coefficients, local mass fluxes as well as the thermal efficiency, etc. were predicted under counter-current flow conditions. The overall performance predicted by the model, in terms of fluxes and temperatures, was verified by single hollow fiber experiments with feed in the shell and permeate in the lumen. Simulations using the model provide insights into counter-current direct contact MD. Based on the predicted temperature profiles, the local heat fluxes are found to increase and then decrease along the fiber length. The deviation of the membrane wall temperature from the Fluid Bulk phase on the feed and the permeate sides predicts the temperature polarization (TP) effect. The TP coefficient decreases initially and then increase along the fiber length. It is also found that the local Nusselt numbers (Nu) present the highest values at the entrances of the feed/permeate sides. Under the assumed operating conditions, the feed side heat transfer coefficients hf are typically half the hp in the permeate side, suggesting that the shell-side hydrodynamics play an important role in improving the heat transfer in this MD configuration. The model also shows how the mass transfer rate and the thermal efficiency are affected by the operating conditions. Operating the module at higher feed/permeate circulation velocities enhances transmembrane flux; however, the thermal efficiency decreases due to the greater heat loss at a higher permeate velocity. The current study suggests that the CFD simulations can provide qualitative predictions on the influences of various factors on MD performance, which can guide future work on the hollow fiber module design, module scale-up and process optimization to facilitate MD commercialization.
