    Abstract:

    Background The emergence and transmission of zoonotic diseases are driven by complex interactions between health, environmental, and socio-political systems. Human movement is considered a significant and increasing factor in these processes, yet Forced Migration remains an understudied area of zoonotic research-due in part to the complexity of conducting interdisciplinary research in these settings. Objectives We conducted a systematic review to identify and analyze theoretical frameworks and approaches used to study linkages between Forced Migration and zoonotic diseases. Methods We searched within eight electronic databases: ProQuest, SCOPUS, Web of Science, PubMed, PLoSOne, Science Direct, JSTOR, and Google Scholar, to identify a) research articles focusing on zoonoses considering Forced migrants in their study populations, and b) Forced Migration literature which engaged with zoonotic disease. Both authors conducted a full-text review, evaluating the quality of literature reviews and primary data using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) model, while theoretical papers were evaluated for quality using a theory synthesis adapted from Bonell et al. (2013). Qualitative data were synthesized thematically according to the method suggested by Noblit and Hare (1988). Results Analyses of the 23 included articles showed the increasing use of interdisciplinary frameworks and approaches over time, the majority of which stemmed from political ecology. Approaches such as EcoHealth and One Health were increasingly popular, but were more often linked to program implementation and development than broader contextual research. The majority of research failed to acknowledge the heterogeneity of migrant populations, lacked contextual depth, and insufficient acknowledgments of migrant agency in responding to zoonotic threats. Conclusions Addressing the emergence and spread of zoonoses in Forced Migration contexts requires more careful consideration and use of interdisciplinary research to integrate the contributions of social and natural science approaches. Robust interdisciplinary theoretical frameworks are an important step for better understanding the complex health, environment, and socio-political drivers of zoonotic diseases in Forced Migration. Lessons can be learned from the application of these approaches in other hard-to-reach or seldom-heard populations.

    Abstract:

    This article traces a key logical framework in Migration research: policy relevance. While many scholars and practitioners call for a closer relationship between research objectives and policy relevance, others have argued otherwise. Research which privileges the worldviews of Forced migrants, rather than those of policymakers and practitioners, holds promise for moving beyond strict policy-laden and often legal categories, thereby creating new knowledge and priorities for policy itself. In this article, we unpack the denouement of this argument, that is, what has transpired in Forced Migration Studies since. Policy irrelevant research seeks to challenge taken-for-granted knowledge, and this article interrogates the politics and the imperatives, both ethical and practical, that arise from such a challenge. To that end, we look at the goals and conduct of a case study of organizations run by and for resettled refugees in the United States. This study illustrates how challenging policy-defined assumptions and categories, and raising critical perspectives drawn from Forced migrants' voices, yields implications for policy. To get there, research moves beyond categories and asks new questions through a deconstructive approach; yet going from here, we argue, entails another role for Forced Migration research, an "active" approach that involves critical translation and application. At this juncture of Forced Migration research, policy irrelevant research seeks to make itself relevant and reasserts itself in policy discourses.

    ABSTRACTClimate change is increasingly forcing population displacement, better described by the phrase environmentally induced Forced Migration. Rising global temperatures, rising sea levels, increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters, and progressive depletion of life-sustaining resources are among the drivers that stimulate population mobility. Projections forecast that current trends will rapidly accelerate. This will lead to an estimated 200 million climate migrants by the year 2050 and create dangerous tipping points for public health and security.Among the public health consequences of climate change, environmentally induced Forced Migration is one of the harshest and most harmful outcomes, always involving a multiplicity of profound resource and social losses and frequently exposing migrants to trauma and violence. Therefore, one particular aspect of Forced Migration, the effects of population displacement on mental health and psychosocial functioning, deserves dedicated focus.     In the 21st century, global issues are increasingly characterized by inter-connectedness and complexity. Global environmental change, and climate change in particular, has become a powerful driver and catalyst of Forced Migration and internal displacement of people. Environmental migrants may far outnumber any other group of displaced people and refugees in the years to come. Deeper scientific integration, especially across the social sciences, is a prerequisite to tackle this issue.

  • Internally Displaced “Victims of Armed Conflict” in Colombia: The Trajectory and Trauma Signature of Forced Migration

    Abstract:

    While conflict-induced Forced Migration is a global phenomenon, the situation in Colombia, South America, is distinctive. Colombia has ranked either first or second in the number of internally displaced persons for 10 years, a consequence of decades of armed conflict compounded by high prevalence of drug trafficking. The displacement trajectory for displaced persons in Colombia proceeds through a sequence of stages: (1) pre-expulsion threats and vulnerability, (2) expulsion, (3) Migration, (4) initial adaptation to relocation, (5) protracted resettlement (the end point for most Forced migrants), and, rarely, (6) return to the community of origin. Trauma signature analysis, an evidence-based method that elucidates the physical and psychological consequences associated with exposures to harm and loss during disasters and complex emergencies, was used to identify the psychological risk factors and potentially traumatic events experienced by conflict-displaced persons in Colombia, stratified across the phases of displacement. Trauma and loss are experienced differentially throughout the pathway of displacement.
