Thus, the stability of Forest ecosystems depends on the sustainable management of Forest genetic resources. In this context, tree breeding and conservation of Forest genetic resources are mentioned as main applications of research in Forest Genetics. Genetic inventories are conducted in order to observe the spatial distribution of genetic information at gene marker loci. Such studies allow us to elucidate the evolutionary history of populations and, thus, to draw conclusions about their evolutionary adaptability. Results of a genetic inventory of oak (Quercus spp.) populations native to Switzerland are presented, and their significance for the characterization of genetic systems and adaptive potential is discussed. Present situation and prospect of in situ hybridization in Forest Genetics and tree breeding.
Journal of Nanjing Forestry University, 2000Co-Authors: Shi Jisen, Fu XiangxiangAbstract:Present situation of In Situ hybridization on the level of chromosome and molecular in Forest trees were described in this paper: 1) identifying the difference of interspecific and intraspecific chromosomes and establishing karyotypes; 2) pursuing the origin and evolution of species; 3) studying genomic structure, organization and spacer array combining with fluochrome banding. The prospect of this technique used in Forest Genetics and tree breeding was also discussed.

Ex Situ Conservation of Forest Genetic Resources in Greece

Aravanopoulos, Kostas IoannidisAbstract:Hellenic ecosystems are biodiversity hotspots, as they harbor 22% of the species found across the Mediterranean basin, while 10% of the plants occurring in them are endemic. Forest tree species are keystone species of the Forest ecosystems that harbor a great part of the above mentioned biodiversity and for this reason the conservation of their genetic resources should be an ultimate goal. In situ conservation of Forest genetic resources is applied intensively at the global, regional and national level, ex situ conservation though can be proved of unique value in the case of rare, endemic, threatened species or populations of widely distributed species that could be eliminated due to stochastic events, biotic or abiotic stresses. Ex situ can be either static or dynamic. The staticex situ conservation plantations (i.e. seed orchards, provenance and provenance-progeny tests) established in Greece will be presented, as well as the potential for long-term seed storage. The reported plantations were established in the framework of breeding programs carried out by two organizations; namely the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Laboratory of Forest Genetics and Tree Improvement) and the Institute of Mediterranean and Forest Ecosystems (IMFE – Laboratory of Silviculture, Forest Genetics and Biotechnology).
