The objective of the study was to evaluate the contribution of NTFPs trade to the livelihoods of traders’ households. Quarterly market surveys and field observations were conducted in eleven markets in 2014. All NTFPs traders were interviewed using semi structured questionnaires. Simple profitability method was used to determine the profit margins of the traded products. The per capita value of NTFPs traded was calculated and was highest for drums ($ 3,101) and lowest for winnowing trays ($3). All products had profit margins above 60%. Income generated from NTFP trade was used to cater for other essential needs in households like payment of school fees, medical treatment, buying food and other household items. NTFP trade has potential of improving the lives of traders through establishment of NTFP enterprises. In order for such enterprises to be successful Forest products traded must be harvested sustainably to ensure consistent supply of the products. Multipurpose species like Markhamia lutea, Phoenix reclinata, Raphia farinifera and Calmus sp. should be domesticated to minimize pressure on the Forest. Information was obtained through interviews using semi- structured questionnaires. Field excursions with traditional healers and herbal medicine collectors were carried out. Descriptive statistics were used to present the data. Fidelity ratios and Informant consensus agreements were calculated. A total of 190 plant species in 61 families and 152 genera were reported in the treatment of various health conditions. Family Fabaceae was dominant representing 14 % of the plant species documented. Vernonia amygdalina was the preferred species for treating malaria. Leaves (68 %) were the most frequently used parts in preparing herbal remedies. Decoctions (29 %) and oral route (53 %) of administration were commonly used method of herbal medicine preparation and administration respectively. Fifty-eight health conditions grouped in 25 categories were treated using medicinal plants. Informant consensus agreement was highest for blood system disorders (0.9) that included anaemia, hypertension and blood cleansing indicating homogeneity of informant’s knowledge about remedies used. Vernonia amygdalina and Erythrina abyssinica had 100 % fidelity level for treatment of malaria and vomiting respectively. The diversity of medicinal plant species used and the associated indigenous knowledge are of great value to the local community and their conservation and preservation is paramount. The therapeutic uses of the documented plants provides basic data for further research focused on pharmacological studies and conservation of the most important species.

Forest Ecology and Management, 1996Co-Authors: Andrew J PlumptreAbstract:The controlled extraction of timber from the Budongo Forest Reserve began in the 1930s. From the start of the operations it was intended that the timber should be harvested on a sustainable yield basis and the first of several 10-year working plans for the Forest was drawn up in 1933. This paper documents the volume of timber removed, the date of logging, date of arboricide treatment and volume of arboricide applied in most compartments in the Forest. Four species of mahogany formed about 65% of the timber extracted and this remained almost constant over the years despite attempts to encourage the use of other species by the Uganda Forest Department. Forest type maps made from sets of aerial photographs taken in 1951 and 1990 showed an increase in ‘mixed Forest’ at the expense of ‘Cynometr Forest’; one of the major aims of the arboricide treatment. Ordination of the basal areas of the common tree species showed that the geographical position of a compartment explained more of the variation in species distribution than the variation between adjacent logged and unlogged compartments. A more detailed inventory of all species of tree in eight compartments across the Forest showed greater species richness in the west of the Forest and greater species richness in logged compartments. Measures of Forest structure showed that more than 50 years is required for the Forest to recover to pre-logging levels.

the effect of selective logging on the primate populations in the budongo Forest Reserve uganda

Most compartments in the Reserve have records of the volume of timber removed, the date of harvesting, and of treatments carried out to encourage regeneration of valuable timber species. 2. Line transect surveys of the five diurnal primates resident in this Forest were carried out in eight of these compartments; two of which had never been logged and six of which had been harvested at approximately 10-year intervals since 1940. 3. Densities were calculated using the computer package DISTANCE. It was found that the 'Hazard Rate Model' fitted the observer-primate distance data better than other models. Densities over the whole Forest were as follows: Cercopithecus mitis sthuhlmannii 43 9 km-2; C. ascanius schmidti 33.3km-2; Colobus guereza occidentalis 39.3 km-2; Papio anubis 11-7km-2; Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii 1-3km2. 4. Only C. guereza showed any significant correlation between logging date and animal density, and none of the primates showed any correlation with the volume of timber removed. For three of the primates (C. guereza, C. mitis and C. ascanius) there were significantly higher numbers in the logged compartments when compared with those that were not logged. 5. Cercopithecus mitis and C. ascanius showed significant correlations between the percentage of different Forest types and the densities of the primates in each compartment. In particular there was a positive correlation with the 'mixed' Forest type that Foresters have been encouraging through their management practices. It is concluded that these two primates and C. guereza have benefited from logging in Budongo and that logging has had little effect on the other two primates.

the diversity abundance and biomass of termites under differing levels of disturbance in the mbalmayo Forest Reserve southern cameroon

Five plots of differing disturbance level (near primary Forest, old secondary Forest, young plantation, weeded Chromolaena fallow, and completely cleared Forest) were sampled for termites in two successive years (July 1992 and July 1993, giving a total of ten sampling areas, plus one in the completely cleared plot in November 1992). A stratified sampling regime of soil pits, wood samples, mound samples and soil scrape samples was used. Estimated abundance and biomass were extremely high in the near primary and old secondary plot (maximum estimated abundance, old secondary sampling area 1, 10488 m -2 , maximum biomass density, near primary sampling area 1,123.2 g m -2 ). In all cases termite abundance was highly clumped. Disturbance had apparently little effect on termite abundances and biomass in Forested plots, but there were clear reductions in abundance and biomass in the cleared plots. In the completely cleared plot, abundance and biomass fell sharply from year 1 to year 2, presumably because colonies left after clearance had dried out and died. There were large differences in the taxonomic-, nesting- and feeding-group composition of the plots, with soil feeding termites being especially strongly affected by disturbance. The sources of error associated with this sampling programme are discussed. It is argued that the near primary Forest plot may have higher microhabitat and concomitant termite assemblage heterogeneity than the more disturbed plots. In most cases over 90 % of the overall abundance in a sampling area was due to a few species; extinction, and will make areas. This may be due to the unpredictable dynamics of colony foundation and extinction, and will make estimations of the effect of termites on overall ecosystem processes (from abundance and biomass data alone) problematical. There is no evidence of immigration of savanna termites into the Forest Reserve, and thus cleared areas have depauperate Forest assemblages. It is concluded that this is the most accurate estimation of termite assemblage parameters yet attempted.
