    Abstract:

    There has been continuing interest among Transportation planners, economic development specialists, and private industry about the relationship between the demand for industrial space and the level of Freight Transportation activity. With the growing importance of logistics and supply chain economics for many industrial and business activities, firms organizing their industrial activities and locating their warehousing and operational centers increasingly must consider the availability, quality, and cost of a range of Transportation services, particularly in connection with essential intermodal activities. Accordingly, development of major logistics parks in conjunction with major intermodal hubs has become an important element in the overall industrial economy, predicated on the notion that robust Freight activity is a good indicator of demand for industrial space. In this study, using regression techniques, we examine the relationship between Freight Transportation activity and industrial space demand at the metropolitan area level. The results confirm this relationship, reflecting significant statistical association between higher levels of Freight traffic and higher levels of industrial space demand. This relationship is more pronounced in inland versus port markets. In addition, the data reveal that there was a shock to industrial space demand in 2001, thereby altering the structural relationship between demand and the drivers of demand.

    This paper develops a dynamic Freight network simulation-assignment platform for the analysis of multiproduct intermodal Freight Transportation systems. At the core of the platform is a model framework for the mode-path assignment problem in multimodal Freight Transportation networks. The framework consists of three main components: a multimodal Freight network simulation component, a multimodal Freight assignment component, and a multiple product intermodal shortest path procedure. The Freight network simulation component incorporates a bulk queuing model to evaluate transfer delay experienced by shipments at intermodal transfer terminals, classification yards, and ports. The multimodal Freight assignment component determines the network flow pattern from a mode-path alternative set calculated by the multiple product intermodal shortest path procedure, based on the link travel costs and node transfer delays from the multimodal Freight network simulation component.     Abstract:

    Freight Transportation demand is a highly variable process over space and time. A multinomial probit (MNP) model with spatially and temporally correlated error structure is proposed for Freight demand analysis for tactical/operational planning applications. The resulting model has a large number of alternatives, and estimation is performed using Monte-Carlo simulation to evaluate the MNP likelihoods. The model is successfully applied to a data set of actual shipments served by a large truckload carrier. In addition to the substantive insights obtained from the estimation results, forecasting tests are performed to assess the model's predictive ability for operational purposes.

    Abstract:

    Abstract Intermodal Transportation refers to multimodal chains or networks involving at least two Transportation modes, Freight being packed into a “container” and not being handled at intermodal-transfer terminals on its trip from its origin to its destination. This characterization makes intermodal Transportation a multi-actor complex system involving a broad range of interacting stakeholders, decision makers, operations, and planning activities. Due to this complexity, simulation is much studied and used within the field of operations research, yielding models, methods, and tools to manage Transportation activities and support the decision-making processes. The literature includes a large number of contributions on particular issues, but a broad view of the field is still missing. This paper aims to fill this gap, using a new taxonomy to structure the recent relevant literature. The proposed taxonomy thus appears a useful instrument to classify the literature and support further analyzes, identifying main findings, trends, and future paths of intermodal Freight Transportation systems across several dimensions (e.g., modes, geographical extensions, time horizons, and simulation objectives).

    Urban Freight Transportation constitutes both an extremely important and a rather disturbing activity. Increasingly, one observes efforts to measure and control Freight movements within city centers. We introduce a possible organizational and technological framework for the integrated management of urban Freight Transportation and identify important associated planning and operation issues and models. We then describe a formulation for one of these problems, the design of the proposed logistical structure, and discuss algorithmic and implementation issues. Our model city and challenge is Rome.

    Abstract:

    Efficient planning of Freight Transportation requires a comprehensive look at wide range of factors in the operation and management of any Transportation mode to achieve safe, fast, and environmentally suitable movement of goods. In this regard, a combination of Transportation modes offers flexible and environmentally friendly alternatives to transport high volumes of goods over long distances. In order to reflect the advantages of each Transportation mode, it is the challenge to develop models and algorithms in Transport Management System software packages. This paper discusses the principles of green logistics required in designing such models and algorithms which truly represent multiple modes and their characteristics. Thus, this research provides a unique practical contribution to green logistics literature by advancing our understanding of the multi-objective planning in intermodal Freight Transportation. Analysis based on a case study from hinterland intermodal Transportation in Europe is therefore intended to make contributions to the literature about the potential benefits from combining economic and environmental criteria in Transportation planning. An insight derived from the experiments conducted shows that there is no need to greatly compromise on Transportation costs in order to achieve a significant reduction in carbon-related emissions.

    The planning of Freight Transportation activities creates benefits as well as costs. Among those costs, some of them, namely externalities, fall on other people/society that have no direct relevance to the operations of Transportation. Such externalities are accrued expenses which should be addressed by actual pricing policies to enable an efficient and sustainable Freight Transportation system. This paper reviews externalities in quantitative terms, and then provides pricing studies of these costs per unit of Freight transported along with the most recent estimations. The associated negative externalities are structured by Transportation mode (road, rail, maritime, and air).

    Recent years have witnessed an increased awareness of the negative external impacts of Freight Transportation. The field of Operational Research (OR) has, particularly in the recent years, continued to contribute to alleviating the negative impacts through the use of various optimization models and solution techniques. This paper presents the basic principles behind and an overview of the existing body of recent research on 'greening' Freight Transportation using OR-based planning techniques. The particular focus is on studies that have been described for two heavily used modes for transporting Freight across the globe, namely road (including urban and electric vehicles) and maritime Transportation, although other modes are also briefly discussed.

    Intermodal Freight Transportation is concerned with the shipment of commodities from their origin to destination using combinations of transport modes. Traditional logistics models have concentrated on minimizing Transportation costs by appropriately determining the service network and the Transportation routing. This paper considers an intermodal Transportation problem with an explicit consideration of greenhouse gas emissions and intermodal transfers. A model is described which is in the form of a non-linear integer programming formulation, which is then linearized. A hypothetical but realistic case study of the UK including eleven locations forms the test instances for our investigation, where uni-modal with multi-modal Transportation options are compared using a range of fixed costs.
