Targets, Theory and Methods of Slavic Generative Syntax : Minimalism, Negation, and Clitics = Ziele, Theorie und Methoden der slavischen Generativen Syntax : Minimalismus, Negation und Klitika
2020Co-Authors: Peter KostaAbstract:This chapter provides a description of Generative Syntax as a discipline within Slavic linguistic research from a theoretical, methodological and scientific-historical viewpoint, including those descriptive models and theoretical approaches which are also preferred in Slavic Generative linguistics working within the Principles and Parameters framework (Chomsky 1995 pasim). A general comprehensive description of Generative Syntax, syntactic levels ad methods of description is followed by a short overview of the current state of the art and the goals and targets of syntactic theory and the description of some syntactically relevant categories (such as negation, word order and clitics). In chapter 2, I will introduce some basic notions of the Minimalist framework. I will concentrate on the question how syntactic levels have to be represented in the Minimalist program (2.1), how the structure of sentential negation can be motivated by the raising of the finite verb (2.2), how negation syntactically interacts with pronominal and verbal clitics (2.3) and related phenomena such as Prosodic Inversion (PrI) (2.4), and finally, what the driving force for V- raising and negation in Imperatives, Gerunds and Infinitives is (2.5).

Die Natur der Sprache, 2017Co-Authors: Dieter HillertAbstract:Verschiedene linguistische Beschreibungen und Simulationen von semantischen und syntaktischen Strukturen werden besprochen. Hierbei werden etablierte Programme wie naturliche/konzeptuelle Semantik, kognitive Grammatik, Generative Syntax, Dependenz-Grammatik und konnektionistische Modelle berucksichtigt. Es wird argumentiert, dass die Unterscheidung zwischen semantischen und konzeptuellen Reprasentationen ein nutzlicher Ansatz fur die empirische Untersuchung der Bedeutungsverarbeitung ist. Bezuglich der Simulation der Satzverarbeitung haben neuronale Netzwerkmodelle eine nicht unwesentliche Vorhersagekraft. Mithilfe von Nachkonstruktionen („Reverse Engineering“), mit denen virtuelle Hirnbibliotheken gebaut werden, konnen neurobiologische Mechanismen besser verstanden werden.

The Nature of Language, 2014Co-Authors: Dieter HillertAbstract:The linguistic description and simulation of semantic and syntactic structures suggested by different theoretical accounts are discussed. We consider thereby established programs including natural/conceptual semantics, cognitive grammar, Generative Syntax, dependency grammar, and connectionist accounts. It is argued that the distinction between semantic and conceptual representations is a useful approach for empirical research on meanings. In the attempt to simulate sentence processing, neural network models have a certain degree of predictive power. Reverse engineering programs, which built virtual brain libraries, might be a very useful mean to improve our understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms.

IALP - Uyghur Stem-Suffix Segmentation and POS-Tagging Based on Functional Suffixes

This study is using functional suffixes (including suffix stringes) to define POS inventory for stem-suffix segmentation and word POS-Tagging based on Prof. Litip Tohti's studies on Uyghur Generative Syntax. To test the feasibility of functional suffix definition system, we conducted stem-suffix segmentation in a big text corpus (270,000 words, without repetition). About 14,100 most frequently used suffix strings generated. The limited number of suffix strings can reflect the feature of huge amount of Uyghur syntactic components. We tag the suffix strings as one unit based on Prof. Litip Tohti's study, and tag the words in corpus based on the suffix instead of the stem. This is a new try, we hope to improve the performance of Uyghur language processing.
